About

In the annals of 21st century alternative rock history there are few artists who cast a longer or more peculiar shadow than Finnish Love Metal pioneer Ville Valo. After all, his band HIM were easily among the most iconic and idiosyncratic groups of the millenium. Zealously revered, gleefully reviled but impossible to ignore, their music left an indelible mark on a worldwide legion of fans. The scarlet letters stood for His Infernal Majesty. Their founder stood for something delightedly out of step with the status quo.

"We only hoped to temporarily redirect hard rock's blood flow from the nether regions towards the heart", reminisces Ville Valo, the singer, songwriter and primus motor of HIM. Judging by the monolithic presence of the Heartagram in any account of music this side of the millennium it's apparent that he succeeded.

Inspired by everyone from Poe to Bukowski and tinged by a penchant for perfumed Sabbathian gloom, Valo's creative lovechild would produce eight era-defining studio releases and over ten million record sales, not forgetting a Grammy nomination, countless magazine covers, critical acclaim, and the veneration of a generation. Thus it came as no surprise that the news of a farewell tour in 2017 was greeted with shock and disbelief among devotees and endless speculation as to what or who was to take up the velvet mantle.

"As fun as the funeral rites for HIM were, it took me more than a few moons to lick my wounds in the shadow of the Heartagram and come up with an excuse to strum and hum again. Eventually I decided put a leash on my beloved black dog and we started howling together instead of barking at each other. That's how Loveletting was born".

Loveletting, the first single off VV's debut album 'Neon Noir' out in early 2023, suggests this new infernal mix of light and shade is nothing short of a landmark release from one of modern music's most distinctive and intriguing voices. It belongs to the same forlorn world of woe and whimsy once conceived and governed by Valo in HIM, but with the nuanced notes of a fine aged Cabernet.

"Artistically speaking the main difference between HIM and VV is the extra line in the Heartagram, but what an exquisite line it is! It's the Mamas and the Papas dressed up as Metallica on their way to a Halloween bash at the Studio 54, and now who wouldn't want to witness that?"

Throughout their career, VV has drawn massive crowds of fans, packing venues like Theatre of Living Arts, the Depot and Summit to capacity.

  • HIM was Amazing!!

by BasementTroll on 5/11/10House of Blues Atlantic City - Atlantic CityRating: 5 out of 5

Show was more intimate than the previous one we saw in Philly. Front row this time instead of in the back. Sound was really good. First experience at House of Blues, definitely not disappointing. Too bad my camera was being tempermental. My pictures this time didn't come out great. The sound on my videos suck too.

  • Amazing as always

HIM never disappoints. The band is truly talented and have always given some the most professional shows I've seen. Although some complain that they're not very personable, I just think the music talks for itself and if you like their music, you'll love the show no matter if Ville smiled or not. Dommin and Drive A were great but that I knew from prior experience. Sadly, the crowd didn't exactly like Drive A but it's because they're not the type of music that typical HIM fans like so I expected it, they're more fit for something like Warped Tour. We are the Fallen I don't like. Maybe it's personal because I happen to dislike that type of music, or anything that resembles Evanescence, so to each their own I guess.

It seems that the lead singer of HIM was drained from all the touring.. I get it.. but for $40 bucks I was underwhelmed.. The band We are the Fallen was the night's saving grace

  • killer show

by urbanriot on 5/10/10The Fillmore New York at Irving Plaza - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

I had tickets to all three days, but only went Friday and Sunday. Friday was pretty good but Sunday was a killer show, one of the best I've seen from any band. It was the last night of HIM's US tour and they played a perfect show. They were in great spirits, Valo sounded great and he was chatty with the audience. I can't express how good their sound was and how rich the music was - it really was an incredible show. They thanked New York and North America for having them - hopefully they will return soon!

  • Him was amazing!!

I would like to express that Him was totally awesome. The lighting and the sound was incredible. It was totally worth the experience. The space was a little small, but it did make for some intimacy to the crowd. I would recommend this band to anyone who likes to hear hardcore rock/goth music.

  • HIM- perfectly flawed

by MistressKokaine on 5/9/10House of Blues Orlando - OrlandoRating: 4 out of 5

Valo seemed to be having a hard time on stage and lost his voice halfway through, but overall it was a good performance; music wise. He did very little on stage, but that also might be because HIM is such a big band. Dommin, One of my newest favortie bands played fantastic. This was my 3rd time seeing them live in the Orlando Florida area. Not at there best, but still a great performance. We are the Fallen- Chick singer- brings some variey to the scene. Very enjoyable, good stage performance. It had the same aura as when I saw Chevvelle and Halestorm last winter. Great. Great. Great. Would go out of my way to see these guys again.

  • SOUL ON FIRE!

by AndyMenarchek on 5/9/10Club Zoo - PittsburghRating: 5 out of 5

This was my first time seeing HIM and they were amazing! Their sound is amazing live it was like listening to them on the record. Ville is alot more energized than he was in previous years( seeing him in videos on youtube) They played a perfect set which included a few songs off of each of their albums. The venue was a nice venue. The only down part was they didn't allow any cameras in the venue. All in all it was an amazing show. Next time they come to Pittsburgh i am definately going to be there!

  • great show

by startingover2 on 5/9/10House of Blues Atlantic City - Atlantic CityRating: 5 out of 5

Show was amazing. Sitting in the balcony was great we could see the whole stage, which is better for me because of being short. The opening bands gave us a little different taste of music. Looking into seeing other bands that are playing there. Will be coming back again.

  • HIM WAS AWESOME

by Lee13 on 5/7/10House of Blues Myrtle Beach - Myrtle BeachRating: 5 out of 5

This concert was really the only reason I drove 6 hours to Myrtle Beach and it did not disappoint. I love HIM!! The music was awesome. The only complaint I have is the guys do not interact with the crowd much. But maybe that is a Finnish thing. Their music was great as always.

  • HIM at House of Blues, Myrtle Beach 05/04/10

by Erin88 on 5/7/10House of Blues Myrtle Beach - Myrtle BeachRating: 5 out of 5

Amazing show. Worth every penny. All bands had amazing energy and love for the music. HIM played a great variety of music from all albums, and seemed to be thoroughly into the music and the crowd. We Are The Fallen stood out in my mind as well, much more than any usual opening band, with lots of energy and great quality to their music. Great vocal ability of the lead singer. Was very impressed with the House of Blues, which was very clean, and well-managed. No glass bottles were sold, which made the concert even more enjoyable, as you didn't have to worry about hurting your feet stepping on broken glass. Friendly employees and a smoke-free atmosphere, which made it so much easier to enjoy the concert. My friends and I will definitely go to another concert at the House of Blues, Myrtle Beach.
