About

Vulfpeck In Concert

The Los Angeles–based collective known for wild, freeform creativity builds off a foundation of classic funk and soul à la the Meters, the Funk Brothers, and Booker T. & the M.G.'s, then incorporates mellow R&B-inflected pop of ‘70s superstars like the Bee Gees, the Doobie Brothers, and Steely Dan. Most importantly, Vulfpeck's millennial constituents — drummer/keyboardist/singer Jack Stratton, guitarist/drummer/singer Theo Katzman, bassist Joe Dart, and keyboardist Woody Goss — infuse the band's vintage touchstones with unbridled energy and mind-bending musicianship. Performances elevate their every note into a celebration of groove music in all its forms. Vulfpeck concerts are typically showcases of raw talent, dance-friendly jams, and songs to sing along to. The number of onstage band members ebbs and flows, soloing, dueting, trading instruments, bantering with one another, and inviting guests to sit in. They often stretch out to five, six, or seven musicians while unspooling exploratory flights of improvisation or digging into whip-tight, hard-hitting songs.

Vulfpeck Background

The Vulfpeck story began at the University of Michigan in the early '10s, when the four founders came together to perform as a live rhythm section for an on-campus concert. Jack Stratton, a musicologist as well as performer, modeled the band's aesthetic after the great unsung backing bands of famous recording studios, including Motown, Stax, and Muscle Shoals. After graduation the core quartet moved to L.A. as a group and worked their way into the city's creative community, bringing along collaborators such as featured vocalist Antwaun Stanley and guitarist Cory Wong. They released EPs and albums on their own Vulf Records, growing their fame entirely via killer recordings and word of mouth about their live shows (as well as one attention-grabbing stunt that gamed Spotify's accounting system). In a short time, they've gained fan bases across Europe and the U.S. — big enough that 2019 sees them playing two of America's grandest concert venues: Red Rocks in May, and Madison Square Garden in September. Young though they are, the Vulfpeck phenomenon is just getting started.

This show finally made Vulfpeck feel like a legitimate bonded unit who performed tremendously. Cannot wait to see where these friends go.

    Pretty good...

by Drock58 on 5/15/17Michigan Theater - Ann Arbor

Not bad, a little too pop for my taste. James Dossick took away from the vibe as well. Great when they hooked onto their funk groove, but not enough of it.

Most talented musicians I've ever seen...

by sdfjkgHlds on 10/16/16The Fox - Boulder

I saw Vulfpeck in Boulder, CO at The Fox in July of 2016. This stands out as the greatest performance of any band I've seen in my entire life. I would absolutely recommend this band to anybody—even if you're new to the funk-scene like me :-) Vulfpeck played at Red Rocks the night before and everyone I know who went had a phenomenal time. They were so well-received at The Fox on Saturday that the next day that they actually setup another last minute concert which sold out in less than an hour! Vulfpeck is absolutely incredible and I have never seen so much passion for music as I've witnessed with these fine individuals. Colorado loves you and you need to come back!!

Vulfpeck; THE BEST LIVE ACT YOU WILL EVER SEE!!!

by IamTrav on 10/12/16Electric Factory - Philadelphia

Pabst Blue Ribbon and the Electric Factory put together a fantastic evening! My friends and I just wanted to attend the after party (with Vulfpeck and Son Little), but were admitted entrance prior, and got to see the headliner of the fest (Animal Collective). The setup they had to accommodate the crowd was very pleasant, and for being an all day drinking fest, security did a fantastic job of keeping people in line. Had an absolute blast! Son Little was awesome! Vulfpeck tore the roof off with their performance. This was my second time seeing them, and they managed to blow me away again! If you're a fan of Vulfpeck AT ALL (even if you only kinda like ONE song), GO SEE THEM LIVE!!! This band will impress, entertain, and have the whole room dancing!

Vulfpeck is the best live band I've ever seen

by Pennylanes on 6/26/16Teragram Ballroom - Los Angeles

Okay so if you have heard of Vulfpeck, you know their recordings are pretty spectular and perfect. Their performances perfectly capture their records and also include very fun audience interactions. I went with a group of about 15-20 people, got there at around 6:45 and waited patiently for a good spot until 8. It was so worth it because we all basically stood in the front row. I would recommend being right in the middle but my spot was on the right side so I guess that was fine. I was recognized by Theo (the main singer) for during an introduction to a song, he said to sing a G note, and I did. After that, he asked who that was and I raised my hand. He gave me a high five and asked for my name (Kira). He then proceeded to the mic to sing "Kira has perfect pitch" and it was beautiful. Such an amazing experience. Antwaun Stanley, who is featured on some songs in various Vulf albums was also there. Some of them also meet and greeted with the crowd and I got a setlist given to me and signed. Best night of my life up to this point!!
