Worst show I have attended in 30+ years of attendi

by romax5225 on 11/7/11Rialto Square Theatre - Joliet

This show was one of the worst shows I've ever attended and my wife have attended hundreds of plays, theatre, and musical productions. We left the theatre after 35 minutes of the performance and let the local people know how displeased we were with the production. If we could get a refund on this one I would ask for one. I have attended multiple interpretations of the Phantom and have seen Andrew Lloyd Webers version in over 6 countries and multiple locations throughout the world. This version left such a poor taste in my mouth I will not attend another Phantom other than a Andrew Lloyd Weber musical interpretation. So much for a nice anniversary gift for my wife.

This was a horrible show. Paying $66 a ticket and basically watching a movie on a screen and the music was so loud. The main lady singing seemed to just kind of screech and we didnt even know if she was singing in English. We left at intermission. I couldnt believe it had only been 50 minutes until intermission. It seemed like hours. Half the audience got up and left. Such a waste of money and nothing to do with Phantom of the Opera except for the silent film plaing in the background. Would love to find out how to get our money back!!!!!!!!

    Horrible rendition

by Willnotseethisagain on 11/7/11Rialto Square Theatre - Joliet

I knew that it was a new twist to Phantom of the Opera, but I HATED it. It was WAYYYYY too different for my taste. The characters were dressed in what I was reminded of as Rocky Horror Picture Show costumes that didn't fit the story at all, the singing was terrible, couldn't understand a word, the dancing was like they took people off the street and showed them the steps right before show time. They were stumbling and off beat. SOOOOOO not what I expected. At one point I was ready to walk out. Very disappointed I spent my money on this show.

Phantom of the Opera by Vox Lumiere

by Warmar on 11/7/11Rialto Square Theatre - Joliet

We thought that this was the worst play we have ever gone to. We have been to the Phantom of the Opera play before in Chicago and loved every minute of it. Based upon our experience in Chicago we invited two more people to join us for this event and all of us were so disappointed that we left at intermission. If I could get my money back I would greatly appreciate it. My wife said she wished that I brought her the night before to see Vince Gill instead of what I brought her to.

    Not What I Was Expecting

by Martian60803 on 11/7/11Rialto Square Theatre - Joliet

Not at all what I was expecting. Needed more action and the stage was set up very plain.

    great night

by brechnsmith on 10/31/11Mayo Civic Center Presentation Hall - Rochester

I would highly recommend this event to those who are theater vets and those who may be attending a performance for the first time. The only gripe we had was the microphones cutting out multiples times and the acoustics were not very good in the arena. The music tended to drown out the performers almost all night. Beyond this, the event was a great time had by all and I would love to see them again either in Rochester or on the road again.

Vox Lumiere's "The Phantom of the Opera": Overdone

by Socster on 10/30/11Mayo Civic Center Presentation Hall - Rochester

Vox Lumiere carries out an idea with lots of potential: to show a great silent film in combination with original music, singing, and choreography. But my wife and I agreed the execution was lacking. First, the volume was overwhelming even with earplugs jammed tight in my ears. It was like being uncomfortably cold or having a headache: a big chunk of your brain is focused on the discomfort and escape from it, blunting your enjoyment of everything else. There was no need for this: had the volume been reduced by half it would have been plenty loud. And I DO like loud music; I often play music very loudly at home or in my car. But there is a limit! Second, the stage lighting was too often so bright that the film image itself was partially or largely obscured. Third, I felt that the composed score needed more variety; too much of it was to a straight-ahead 4-4 beat and there was too much repetition in the "songs." Finally, the screen was simply too small in relation to the rest of the production. I do want to say that it was clear the members of Vox Lumiere were highly talented: the singing, costumes, dancing, and musicianship were first-rate. To sum it up, my wife and I left at intermission, despite paying what is a lot for us, and living an hour away.

    Was a unique experience.

by Anonymous on 10/30/11Mayo Civic Center Presentation Hall - Rochester

Vox Lumiere's "The Phantom of the Opera" was a unique experience. This show is not for everyone and it helps to be familiar with the story. It was difficult to understand some of the lyrics to the songs.

    Unique and captivating

by DaniRN on 10/30/11Mayo Civic Center Presentation Hall - Rochester

I didn't come into this show with any expectations, and I left amazed! The mix of theater, music, and silent film was nothing I'd ever seen before, and it was enthralling. I'd love to see another production with this mix and I've recommended it to all my friends.
