For 40 years, the music of Village People has been putting smiles on the faces of fans all around the world. Their hits have become part of the international songbook – and heard in commercials from Pepsi to Wonderful Pistachios. In fact, the iconic Y.M.C.A (along with its dance) is featured at almost every party, wedding, bar mitzvah, and sporting event.
It began in 1977 when producer/composer Jacques Morali, with business partner Henri Belolo, were recording a new album for their group, Ritchie Family, called African Queens. One of the background singers recruited for the album by arranger and conductor Horace Ott was Victor Willis who was performing in the Broadway musical The Wiz. After completing the album, Morali and Belolo again approached Willis – this time about another musical project they were planning.
“I had a dream that you sang lead vocals on an album I produced, and it went very, very big,” Morali told Willis. “I have four tracks. I can’t pay you much right now but if you agree, I’ll make you a star.” Willis agreed.
Those four tracks, San Francisco (You’ve Got Me), In Hollywood (Everyone’s a Star), Fire Island, and Village People were recorded by Willis with professional background singers and released on the debut album Village People in 1977. Essentially, Village People initially was simply Victor Willis. The album quickly rose to the top of the dance charts.
Demand for the “group” to appear in concert and on television shows like American Bandstand and Merv Griffin was great. The only problem ... there was no group! This forced Morali, Belolo and Willis to put together an actual group around Willis and quick.
Village People become an international phenomenon with the release of their second album, Macho Man. Following the release of their third album, Cruisin, they embarked on a worldwide tour. Cher, Madonna and Joan Rivers are among artists who appeared on the bill with Village People everywhere from Las Vegas to Madison Square Garden to Hollywood’s Greek Theatre. Even Michael Jackson shared billing with the group.
With hits like San Francisco/In Hollywood, Macho Man, YMCA, In the Navy and Go West, the group sold more than 100 million records worldwide and earned many awards including the American Music Award-Favorite Musical Group 1979. Village People was featured on the cover of Rolling Stone. Television appearances included a Bob Hope Special, 20/20, American Bandstand, Solid Gold, Soul Train, Midnight Special, and Don Kirshner’s Rock Concert.
Village People hits are featured in dozens of major motion pictures, including Wayne’s World II, Adams Family Values, The Nutty Professor, and Despicable Me 2. The Broadway hit Priscilla: Queen of the Desert features the Village People tune Go West. The songs are also heard in casinos around the world in “Village People Party” slot machines. In September 2008, the group received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
Over the years, various renditions of Village People consistently toured the world with several replacement lead singers.
On the 40th anniversary of the group, Willis, the original lead singer, returned. With his powerful and distinctive voice, the party continues with the original “Hot Cop” back at the helm featuring a live band for a world class Village People performance and headline act.
The Village People put on a fabulous show! They were energetic and performed flawlessly.
Show was about what I expected. They sing all of your favorites and throw in a couple of oldies but goodies. The guys are full of energy and dance the entire time. Have to say I was shocked by the demographics of the fans. I'm 49 and was by far the youngest fan there. Only issue I had and its minor at best was the length of the show. 1 hour and 15 min. I got a lot in an hour but for todays ticket prices, need to have a little bit longer show. Overall very fun and these guys thanked their fans numerous times, would see them again in a heart beat.
my 2nd time to see the VP and what an experience. All the moves the hits and fun. Very enjoyable. Special VIP show with dinner meet and greet and pic. The guys were very nice. At the end of the show the Indian (original member) gave my daughter a feather. They ran through all the hits a couple of covers (doobie brothers listen to the music) played for about 1 hr 25 minutes. Fun fun fun. All performed with prerecorded music. Cool that there are still 2 original members in the band
Very entertaining. Just what I suspected it would be.
This was a great show. So much fun. Left it dancing all the way home. Would see them again and again.
Was less than a high school production. Taped music was ok. All that was on stage was a row of micophones. Garage band lighting. Second and last show I'll see at Twin River Casino
No band behind the singers, should have done some research before spending 170 on 2 tickets, left early
Amazing, The show took us back in time to our teenage years.
WORTH THE PRICE .GOOD TIME REMEMBERING OLD FAVORITES.
Danced the whole concert from my 6th Row Seat. I really enjoyed last years concert. Not only did I have tix to the concert, but VIP Admission to the after party/meet & greet with the Village People & Maxine Nightingale
Show was really Fantastic! Music great! Glad we went!
Village People put on a high energy 75 minute show featuring all of their hits from the 70's through present. Dance moves were great throughout. The only negative was that the instrumental backup was not live, just recorded. The low price of the tickets compensated for the lack of live backup.
This concert was not well publicized but was totally awesome! They were great! If you have not seen them it is so worth going to one of their concerts!
My BFF and I saw them Saturday night August 2, 2014 and they were AWESOME. We would go again when they perform around here
i thought the did an a fantastic job in the navy was a GREAT PART OF THE SHOW SINCE MY UNCLE was in the navy and his wife was with me she was touched
The Village People did not disappoint. They started shorty after the published start time and performed non-stop in a very energetic fashion which reminisced of the earlier days. It was nice to see the original Felipe (Native American) and Alex (Now Soldier) perform and the latest Cowboy Jim was a pleasure to watch. The entire team was a dream and the theater was packed with fans. Thank you Village People, it was fun!
Overall outstanding event by Village People. They played alot of there old songs and added in a new one as well. Seats were very good sort of a different atmosphere like a dinner theatre style seating.
I really have a good time. The show is very nice and very intertaining
I am so glad I went to see the village people. They were great and it brought back so many memories. Disco music was the best music ever.
Loved the show. Was lots of fun and the guys sounded great. Just wish it went on a little longer!
