    Verismo Opera's Carmen

by ScarletKnight83 on 4/29/15Bergen Performing Arts Center - Englewood

The performance guide stated that Ola Rafalo was "born to play Carmen", and this is the honest truth. Too many productions of Carmen ask us to believe that an over weight , over aged mezzo-soprano is the sultry temptress. But Ms Rafalo has the looks and passion to make us all slaves to her charms. In addition, like a true siren, her fine voice made some of opera's finest arias come alive. Jose Heredia was also an excellent and believable Don Jose, capturing the youth and passion of the role, with a truly enjoyable voice. Daniel Kerr was solid as usual as Le Dancaire, and Donata Cucinotta showed true promise as Micaela. I look forward to watching this fine young cast for many years to come.

My friend and I enjoyed this full production opera, our second by Verismo Opera, very much. The principals and the chorus were all very good as was the orchestra.

    Great production

by LarryKathy on 10/29/14Bergen Performing Arts Center - Englewood

I have been to several Verismo productions. This one was as great as all of them had been. From cast to sets to orchestra and direction, it was all way above what one might expect; especially at these prices.

La Boeheme was excellent, Musetta rocked it!

by MarkHart on 10/29/14Bergen Performing Arts Center - Englewood

Saw La Boheme at the Bergen PAC. I liked the theater, the performance was excellent. And I thought Justyna Giermola who played Musetta was the stand out. Musetta is the most colorful character anyway, but the Soprano who player her had the strongest voice and played the part well. Wish there were more performances :)

    La Boheme at Bergen PAC

by ScarletKnight83 on 10/23/14Bergen Performing Arts Center - Englewood

Jose Heredia was truly enjoyable as Rodolfo, with a fine voice and youthful style. Youngjoo An made a good Marcello with his fine voice. Jeanai La Vita played Musetta perfectly; no matter what was going on onstage, your eyes kept focusing on her to see what she was doing. There was some difficulty with the sets and a little confusion that should be ironed out by the second performance. All in all, while this was not Verismo's strongest production, there was plenty of good acting and strong voices to make this an enjoyable afternoon that I would recommend.

    Bergen PAC opera great

by LarryKathy on 10/23/13Bergen Performing Arts Center - Englewood

As usual the Bergen PAC opera performances were outstanding. Orchestra was terrific but unfortunately amplification was too loud and sometimes drowned out voices. Took my grandkids (10 and 11) . Very cost effective way to introduce them to opera. They have no interest in opera but liked the experience enough that they would do it again.

    Rusticana and Pucci was unbelievable!

by vkanacki on 10/23/13Bergen Performing Arts Center - Englewood

There were 2- 1 hour operas, The first made us all cry ( In a good way), the artists sang their hearts out with all the emotion that can be displayed in music as possible. The second performance was lively, funny, great costumes, great voices! Again, it was all in all a great experience, will definitely go back!

    Pagliacci/Gianni Schicchi

by LarryKathy on 4/23/13Bergen Performing Arts Center - Englewood

Excellent production. Not the Met but close to NYC opera quality. Surprisingly large cast and orchestra of top quality. Traditional production (my preference) and great choreography. Modest but good sets and great costumes. Can't imagine doing better for the price and the convenience of location and parking.

Rigoletto at Bergen Performing Arts Center

by Lynnfel on 10/27/10BERGEN PERFORMING ARTS CENTER - Englewood

In general Rigoletto was enjoyable, but my experience was disappointing because of the sub-titles that were provided. In the beginning moments of Act I, the sub-titles needed to a quick focused. Someone must have noticed and an attempt was made to focus them, but it only made things worse. Nothing else was done and you ended up paying more attention to the sub-titles (trying to figure them out) then the opera. At the end of Act I, I complained and my answer was either, “Nothing can be done!” Or “We’re working on it!” Ultimately nothing was done and I left with a headache. The performance was excellent. It’s a shame that something technical spoiled a lovely evening.
