Slow Burn's Groundhog day is High Quality Theater!

by Jeff in FLL on 3/16/20Amaturo Theater at Broward Center - Ft Lauderdale

We were fortunate enough to sit close to the stage for this performance. WE hold two season tickets to the Broadway in Fort Lauderdale productions and this performance rivaled the acting quality of those. We really enjoyed the clever set and lighting changes, but the acting and singing was stellar. I wish I had caught onto this locally supported troupe sooner, but you can rest assured we will be seeing more of their upcoming productions. It is great to know we have such quality theater right here at home without having to call on Broadway. By the way the show is fun, the songs and the lyrics are quite entertaining and some songs are just plain hilarious. It moves nicely and the laughs are frequent. Somehow it becomes a meaningful show with a message. What was most fun is that the entire ensemble acted as an ensemble, it was definitely the sign of great chemistry, direction and production. The final result truly did exceed the sum of its parts! Congrats to all.

    Groundhog Day

by BAS on 2/19/20Amaturo Theater at Broward Center - Ft Lauderdale

Unfortunately, I did not enjoy Part 1 of this musical. The constant darkening then lighting of the stage, the sound that alerted you of the next day, the repetition of the dialogue etc. became annoying. Part 2: Excellent!! Note: Everyone near my seat complained that the theater was too cold

Distracting patrons ruined otherwise fine show

by AlexF on 2/19/20Amaturo Theater at Broward Center - Ft Lauderdale

I probably would have enjoyed this show. It was cute, the sets and costumes were on point, and Clay Cartwright is always a delight. Unfortunately, I couldn't watch the show because of extremely rude patrons who, in keeping with Broward County tradition, treated the theater like their living room. The party in front of us arrived 45 minutes into the first act. Despite the fact that there wasn't really a break in the show, they were seated, creating a huge distraction. Their later entitled behavior leads me to suspect they might have brazened their way in. During act 2, despite a large amount of signage and a pre-show announcement about not using electronic devices (which they didn't hear since they weren't there yet) , the woman in front of me took out her phone and proceeded to text for SEVERAL MINUTES on a very large phone. The theater staff were oblivious, so finally, I asked her to stop. Fortunately, her daughter also told her to stop, so she did. After the show (when the woman berated me for telling her to stop texting), I approached staff and was told I should have gone to get an usher. I'm sorry, but cell phones are prohibited and, also, are extremely obvious devices that light up, and she was doing it for an extended time. This wasn't someone eating candy or whispering a few times. Cell phones can be used for illegal piracy. I, as a patron, should not have to decide between sucking it up, missing the play to locate theater staff, or being "that person" who says something. Theater staff should be vigilant enough to tell patrons to put away their phones. Unfortunately, this behavior and other rude patron behavior has been a continuing problem at the Broward Center. People know that nothing will happen if they're rude, so they feel entitled to think only of themselves, ruining the show for everyone else. It is a shame.

Probably the best production of GHD

by RD on 2/19/20Amaturo Theater at Broward Center - Ft Lauderdale

SlowBurn does it again, fantastically! Groundhog Day can be a tough sell, because it’s such a dense, layered show. However, SlowBurn took this show on and produced one of the best versions of the show I’ve seen (and I’ve seen multiple versions of the show)! It’s one of my favorites and under Patrick, Matthew, Jackie and Jerel, this production shines. I saw it multiple times during the run and am a huge fan. Always looking forward to what SlowBurn does!

    Surprisingly Hysterical

by Bonib1 on 2/17/20Amaturo Theater at Broward Center - Ft Lauderdale

I was a bit hesitant to purchase tickets for this show because I had no idea how they could re-create this movie into a live show. Boy was I surprised. It was really fresh and funny. My husband hates musicals and really enjoyed this show. It had a lot of humor and they did a great job re-creating the same day over and over again! Love it! I THINK YOU WILL TOO!

A Great Night Out at the Theater

by Patrushka on 2/17/20Amaturo Theater at Broward Center - Ft Lauderdale

The actors, bar none, were absolutely talented. The sets were so innovative. The script and the music were excellent. Furthermore, the Amaturo theater is wonderfully intimate with comfortable seat and acoustics.

    Well done, alot of fun

by Rick on 2/12/20Amaturo Theater at Broward Center - Ft Lauderdale

I did not want to go but my wife dragged me out. I am now happy that I went. Very talented group of performers. They did an amazing job of staging, especially considering the limited space available to fit it all in. I only gave it 4 stars because if you had not seen the movie, you would not have understood some of the scenes or lines. I think a play should be able to stand on it's own. Overall though it made for a great night.
