About

Inspired by the Life of Richard Pryor. Sex, Drugs and Comedy. Unspeakable is an unflinching ride through the emotional landscape of Richard Pryor spanning sixty-one years and focused on the period between 1967 and 1982. Born and raised in a Peoria brothel owned and operated by his grandmother, Pryor faced situations that forever shaped and scarred his sensitive soul. With a pimp for a father and his mother a whore, young Pryor’s imagination allowed him to escape and ultimately led him to comedy. Unspeakable captures the energy of a man battling success and the demons it invites.

Given the strong language and adult situations inherent in this story, this production is recommended for audiences 16 years of age and older. UNSPEAKABLE is not endorsed, supported or sponsored in any manner by the Estate of Richard Pryor or any other party connected with the Estate or the comedian himself. UNSPEAKABLE is a theatrical event inspired by known facts about a public figure in order to offer a perspective on the entertainment business, race, human nature (and/or whatever you take away from the experience). Otherwise it is work of fiction, and any resemblance to actual events or persons, living or dead, is entirely coincidental and not intended.

    Don't waste your time...

by sjBirthdayBust on 10/20/15Broadway Playhouse at Water Tower Place - Chicago

This was extremely disappointing. We expected poignant but funny and all we got were a bunch of people yelling at each other in voices almost impossible to understand. We had no idea of the plot of the play or if there even was one. I chose it because it was for "adults" as it was supposed to be a fun night out with out the kids for my wife's birthday. But it was truly terrible. And while it may have been factual, who wants to see that kind of ugliness on a night out.

    Shocked & Pleasantly Surprised

by repeatview on 10/19/15Broadway Playhouse - Chicago

I read a few reviews that made me curious and finally went to see it for myself. I am sure glad I did! I go to a lot of theater and I've never seen anything quite this raw and honest. It really is a dramatic dreamlike experience. I only know Richard Pryor from a few of his movies, and this show shed a whole new light on his life that I had no idea about. It was really an intense drama, but still funny in ways and places I didn't expect. My friend and I have not been able to stop talking about it.

    Absolutely Unique & Riveting

by PryorFanatic on 10/19/15Broadway Playhouse - Chicago

This was a thunderbolt of originality. I never heard of a dramatic fantasia before, but the show lived up to both words. It is DRAMATIC and a FANTASIA. It's kinda dream like in the way it unfolds the events of Richard Pryor's life. And it was a DEEP life! There was a lot of harsh language, but it was organic to the world. I've never seen anything like it and plan to go back. I hope this show stays around long enough to find the audience it deserves. I think it's brilliant!

    Uniquely UNSPEAKABLE!!

by MJWilliamson on 10/19/15Broadway Playhouse - Chicago

These are the random thoughts that came to mind as I watched the show Sweetly sinister. Absurdly authentic. Torturously titillating. Truth, threatening. Brilliantly reckless. Enthrallingly edgy. Obtuse, outrageous, and otherly. Assaulting and Intelligent. Thunderously terrific. Arrestingly erudite.

    Horrible

by 1worst on 10/19/15Broadway Playhouse at Water Tower Place - Chicago

I thought the play was the worst play I have ever seen. The play did not have a plot. The language was vulgar and the profanity was unnecessary

    Amazing

by IloveRichard on 10/19/15Broadway Playhouse - Chicago

I was there opening night and I have to say the show is amazing! I'm not sure what show some of the other people saw but I am a huge Richard fan and I can say that the authors did a great job telling Richard's story. I came back to see it again and discovered even more levels to the story. The actor who plays Richard really looked, sounded and felt like Richard. His story is not easy but understanding what he dealt with helps to respect and appreciate him as a human being. I highly recommend this show to all of my friends. Its not a comedy so don't come expecting a laugh out loud experience. Its tagged as a dramatic fantasia for a reason. Its a real honest look into his life.

Wanted to leave 10 minutes in and only got worse.

by Margie112485 on 10/19/15Broadway Playhouse at Water Tower Place - Chicago

The main character misspoke and forgot his lines multiple times, the overall storyline was twisted and too bizarre, and just not worth the time to watch it.

    Unspeakably Bad!

by KSJP on 10/19/15Broadway Playhouse at Water Tower Place - Chicago

This was a huge disappointment. The characters lacked depth and emotion. This is not a play but more of an outline for a movie script. This story should have been set in the brothel where Richard Pryor spent so much of his time growing up. It would have allowed the audience to see fully developed characters who would have given us insight into the emotional baggage Pryor carried throughout his life. I wanted to leave before intermission. I stayed for the whole play. The theater was half empty on a Friday night. Don't go.

    Pretty Awful

by flip37 on 10/18/15Broadway Playhouse at Water Tower Place - Chicago

I see a lot of theater, and I don't walk out of shows very often, but this was pretty unbearable. Very disjointed. Lack of humor. Weird choices. It felt very community theater meets experimental art.

    Excellent Journey of an Icon

by ChicagoBorn1 on 10/15/15Broadway in Chicago - Chicago

I was able to see the play and I must say as a 56 year old White Guy, it was everything that I read Richard Pryor was. Don't go to this play looking for laughs, it touches on the pain that made Richard the great comedian he was. There was things that I knew and things that I learned in the course of 2 hours. The actors were amazing and did a wonderful job, Mr. Jackson not only looks like Pryor but he sounds like him. If you are a Richard Pryor fan and you want to learn more about what made him who he was, go see this!!!

Not Worth the Time or Money

by Substantial on 10/15/15Broadway Playhouse at Water Tower Place - Chicago

The play didn't meet my expectations of who Richard Pryor really was, but it was a decent try. The cast wasn't horrible, but no real talent. The actress that played the grandmother was the best talent throughout the play. She was very entertaining.

Not Ready for Broadway (in Chicago)!

by Ireen on 10/14/15Broadway Playhouse at Water Tower Place - Chicago

This venue is always nice, all the seats are good. However, the play was a huge disappointment. Word may have gotten out because there were a LOT of empty seats; the rows we were in were 'invited' to move down closer. Wish I had waited for reviews. Didn't realize this was an unauthorized version; they couldn't use material from Pryor's acts. It was an 'interpretation' but not a very good one. Too long also.

    Unspeakable

by Oldschoolll on 10/14/15Broadway Playhouse at Water Tower Place - Chicago

Way too much profanity. No real dialogue. Spent more time trying to associate a character in richard's than enjoying the movie. This was a Quentin Tarantino type of play. Finally, the part where richard goes on and on and on saying the New word was ridiculous. Ironically, I just did a preview of what I'm sending and spelled out the N word and the response was I'm using inappropriate language. The N word was used over a million times in the play...really

Unspeakable is my opinion of this theatrical mess

by FloridaBuckeye on 10/13/15Broadway Playhouse at Water Tower Place - Chicago

The one redeeming characteristic of Unspeakable is the actor playing the lead role of Richard Pryor. He looks and sounds just like Richard Pryor and lives the role. Unfortunately, the production is a mess. The play jumps around in time in the life of Richard Pryor and is hard to follow. The cast roles are confusing, with the same actor/actress playing multiple roles, and some of the characters (a woman playing a rat) are just downright strange. I was very disappointed by the play. I almost left at the intermission, but there was a strange fascination to see it all the way to the end just to see how bad it could get. Don't waste your money.

    "Unwatchable"

by Deborahlee on 10/12/15Broadway Playhouse at Water Tower Place - Chicago

We see quite a bit of theatre in Chicago. This is the WORST play we've seen in a long time. The writing was awful and it was tedious. I love Richard Pryor so was anxious to see this play. What a disapointment! We were a group of 4. One person fell asleep . We all decided to cut our losses and left at intermission.

Left before intermission. Disappointment! Waaay too much profanity; to the point of squeamish discomfort!
