Portland psych-rockers Unknown Mortal Orchestra are returning to Australia to debut their upcoming fourth album Sex and Food. The band’s newly released singles ‘Not In Love We’re Just High’ and ‘American Guilt’ – which triple j described as “Prince doing stoner rock” – deliver the hypnotic psychedelic beat they are best known for.
Fronted by visionary Ruban Nielson, the band was last in Australia for a string of sold-out headline shows in 2015 with their critically acclaimed album Multi-Love, which continued Nielson’s exploration of his art, his life, and experience with polyamory through hallucinogenic funk and R&B.
“…I wanted to embrace this abandoned genre of rock music that I keep reading is “dead” and invite people to hear with this living dead genre sounds like in the UMO universe,” Nielson said.
UMO are a force to be reckoned with on stage and this live performance will be an altogether otherworldly jam session that will leave you hot and sweaty.
“A whirlwind and entirely strange adventure that leaves you breathless and exhilarated.” Tone Deaf
Happy UMO is still around. Can’t wait to see them get even better
The opening act was mainly ambient noise from synth & guitar. It's too loud and went to for too long. The doors opened at 7PM, but UMO didn't start till 9:20PM. It was a long boring wait. The band gave a good performance, but it's spoiled by poor sound. It's too loud and too much reverb for the venue. The sound got a bit better after a few numbers, but it's still not optimal. The stage was obscured by thick smoke, made it difficult to see the band members in the back.
They're so great live, such an ethereal experience.
I felt that the music could've been more louder. The bass is something I love hearing, especially hearing Jake's unique playing style. But I could not hear his bass as much as I wanted. Great performance though, it was an privilege seeing them live!
Super easy line good crowd and the venue is nice. My first time at the palladium and it was pretty good, music sounded good and the floor was spacious. Right down the street from amoeba which we hit up first, and theres plenty of places to park as long as you reserve it ahead. UMO was amazing, played almost every song i wanted to hear. Stage presence and skill is off the charts and getting to hear their newest stuff was awesome. Pretty great show id recommend UMO live anytime and wouldnt mind returning to the palladium sometime soon
Go see UMO. Legendary, tasteful, and amazing artists playing their hearts out.
Musicians are all obviously incredibly talented but the show left a few things to be desired. Low mids were way too high due to reverb in the venue and basically rendered the vocal and guitar unintelligible. A bit of a messy performance which isn’t objectively bad but i felt it did not really suit the music. Basically all the best songs were in the encore… which didn’t start until 3.5 hours after doors opened, would’ve been nice to have the chance to enjoy some of the hits earlier in the evening.
Incredible band, incredible act! Unforgettable! New fan!
UMO killed it, of course, and the staff at the bar and coat check were all super nice and personable. Love this band, love this venue.
i love UMO but they sounded so flat, almost like just playing a recording. the sound wasn’t nearly loud enough either. the only song that sounded good was the final song they played. also could have done way better with the lighting and the back drop. overall pretty boring show, i’m sad :(
I have been listening to umo for over 2 years and I am so happy I saw them live i had an amazing time and I would love to go again
the vibes were incredible the people were vining everything was great I’ve been a umo fan since my freshman year of high school and now I’m a senior about to graduate so it was definitely the best experience of my life
They were amazing, sound just like they do on their albums! Lead singer had sick dance moves!!
I didn’t know what to expect but they totally blew me away. Especially the drummer. Lead singer had great energy too. Recommended my friend to go when they are in her city.
Ruban is insanely talented and gave an incredible show! Amazing music that's fun to listen and dance to
Show was awesome - Ruban and UMO killed it. Highlight was when Ruban left the stage for 5 minutes at the end of From The Sun while still soloing on guitar and then finally appeared in the balcony of the Fox to finish his solo.
i was regret buy them ticket i won’t never go them show anymore.
Not only was this concert fantastic but the venue is so large a spacious and never feels over crowded. The energy in the room was phenomenal and an incredible lights display. LOVE THIS PLACE!
I saw UMO for the first time at First City Fest and I was hooked. Saw them again at The Filmore- awesome show. The Fox show was great overall. Stage lighting and set and surprises were fantastic! The sound wasn't the best as the synth bass was insane sometimes and drowned out everything else. Reuben sounded great as per usual, even after being freaking jumped the night before!
I enjoyed myself. They ranged through lots of different genres in the songs they played. Besides a few of their hits their music is difficult to dance to. The band members performed well but didn't do much to engage the crowd. A couple of times the lead singer walked around in the crowd which was fine but he never spoke much to the crowd. This was their second show of this tour so I think they are still getting used to performing the line-up of songs. They played a song they haven't released yet. Overall a fun experience but I never experienced that feeling of being completely lost in or enchanted by the show that makes a show amazing.
