About

Portland psych-rockers Unknown Mortal Orchestra are returning to Australia to debut their upcoming fourth album Sex and Food. The band’s newly released singles ‘Not In Love We’re Just High’ and ‘American Guilt’ – which triple j described as “Prince doing stoner rock” – deliver the hypnotic psychedelic beat they are best known for.

Fronted by visionary Ruban Nielson, the band was last in Australia for a string of sold-out headline shows in 2015 with their critically acclaimed album Multi-Love, which continued Nielson’s exploration of his art, his life, and experience with polyamory through hallucinogenic funk and R&B.

“…I wanted to embrace this abandoned genre of rock music that I keep reading is “dead” and invite people to hear with this living dead genre sounds like in the UMO universe,” Nielson said.

UMO are a force to be reckoned with on stage and this live performance will be an altogether otherworldly jam session that will leave you hot and sweaty.

“A whirlwind and entirely strange adventure that leaves you breathless and exhilarated.” Tone Deaf

  • Excellent Live Band

by Nate1882 on 4/26/18Port City Music Hall - PortlandRating: 5 out of 5

Unknown Mortal Orchestra played a passionate and electrifying set. A great live band-clearly they love what they do.

  • UMO concert was a thrill

by Larzard on 8/1/16The Sinclair - CambridgeRating: 5 out of 5

The band was tight as hell. Nice to see a Berklee grad. Filling in for the drummer. She had a gospel vibe which was unexpected but worked really well! The lights were cool! The lead singer came into the audience and made it all the way back to the sound booth!

  • Best concert of my life

    by Mulder727 on 7/31/16The Sinclair - CambridgeRating: 5 out of 5

Seeing my favorite band on my birthday was an unforgettable experience. I cannot express in words how amazing this show was. Ruban is a beast on guitar. Definitely get the Hendrix/Zappa vibes. As a guitar player myself, his playing is incredibly inspiring. His stage presence was like nothing else. Dancing around and falling in the floor during guitar solos, and even hopping of the stage during Stage or Screen to sing the song in the crowd! Go see this band.

  • Unknown Mortal Orchestra left me speechless

by LizardShark on 6/24/15The Hollow - AlbanyRating: 5 out of 5

The band totally blew me away with their dynamics. I really appreciated their spotlights of each member throughout the performance. They didn't follow the rules, they let loose and made love with the audience. Truly incredible.

  • UMO put on a great show

by deadaselvis on 9/29/13The Fillmore - San FranciscoRating: 4 out of 5

Great bartenders great cocktail server. Great opening act merch was a bit pricy for me. UMO really had a good show my first time seeing them and I had a great time. I miss the free posters Darn it !

  • Wampire, Unknown Mortal Orchestra are fantastic

    by LazarusLong87 on 3/11/13Bluebird Nightclub - BloomingtonRating: 4 out of 5

Wampire and UMO are great, great bands who put on great shows, suitable for dancing around or just listening. highly recommended to anyone that's a fan of psychedelic rock. Foxygen, however, played an absolutely terrible set. I think they have potential but their frontman was absurdly high and could not perform. He was just alternating between mumbling and screaming into the microphone, stumbling around and interrupting his own set. Worst band I've ever paid money to see. That being said, Wampire and UMO are so great that It's worth seeing them, just step out while Foxygen is playing if they're really high again.

  • Wellknown Mortal Orchestra

Fun show! Good attendance. Very young crowd. Sports videos by the merch table and pool tables in back too.

  • Unknown Mortal Orchestra a strong band but...

    by bassman34 on 3/4/13Brighton Music Hall - BostonRating: 3 out of 5

...the sound was pretty terrible. The band's great songs were marred by a too loud house volume and a muddy sound. Inexcusable in 2013, will not visit this venue again.

  • not so good live

by MusikAnimal on 3/3/13Bowery Ballroom - New YorkRating: 2 out of 5

The opening band, Foxygen, was pretty awesome. Unknown Mortal Orchestra, not so awesome. They sound infinitely better in the studio. Live it is very dry and dull. Most people left!

This was a great show. It was a small venue so everyone was really close to the stage and the band was awesome and high energy and played songs differently (but better) than on the album.
