University of Texas Longhorns Men's Basketball History

The University of Texas Longhorns men’s basketball team launched in 1906 and spent its initial years as an independent program until forming the Southwest Conference for the 1914-15 season. After logging a 22-1 record under coach Ed Olle, the Longhorns retroactively won their sole national championship in 1933, as determined by the Premo-Porretta Power Poll. Texas later helped create the Big 12 Conference ahead of the 1996-97 season, and remained a member until joining the SEC in 2024.

The Longhorns have made 39 tournament appearances and reached the Final Four three times in 1943, 1947 and 2003. Texas has made all but three NCAA Tournaments since 1999. In the Big 12, Texas won three regular season conference titles and conference tournaments in 2021 and 2023. The Longhorns have also won the National Invitation Tournament twice, in 1978 and 2019. 

Notable Texas alumni include Kevin Durant, LaMarcus Aldridge, D.J. Augustin, T.J. Ford, Royal Ivey, P.J. Tucker, Jarrett Allen and Avery Bradley, who have all continued on to lengthy pro careers. Durant was named Naismith Player of the Year in 2007.
