About
University of Texas Longhorns Women's Basketball History
The University of Texas Longhorns women’s basketball team reached varsity level ahead of the 1974-75 season. After launching with no conference affiliation, Texas joined the Southwest Conference in 1982, followed by the Big 12 in 1996 and the Longhorns’ current conference home in the Southeastern Conference (SEC) in 2024. Texas was first coached from 1974 to 1976 by Rod Page, who was succeeded by longtime head coach Jody Conradt between 1976 and 2007.
Over the years, the Texas Longhorns women’s basketball team has earned 37 appearances in the NCAA Women’s March Madness tournament, advancing to the Final Four four times and winning the National Championship in 1986. The NCAA Tournament victory also sealed Texas’ first and only undefeated (34-0) season. Outside of March Madness, the Lady Longhorns have won 14 regular season conference titles and 12 conference tournament championships. In 2025, Texas advanced to the Final Four while claiming the SEC regular season conference title in their first season of eligibility.
Amongst the Texas Lady Longhorns alumni, four have been inducted to the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame, all from the 1986 championship squad: Kamie Ethridge, Clarissa Davis, Andrea Lloyd and Annette Smith. While wearing the Texas orange and white, Davis was selected as Naismith College Player of the Year twice, in 1987 and 1989.
