UNC Tar Heels at Kenan Memorial Stadium

Chapel Hill, NC, is home to the University of North Carolina and one of the premier teams in the Atlantic Coast Conference. The Tar Heels play at Kenan Memorial Stadium, which opened in 1927, and after recent renovations has a current capacity of 50,500. Originally named after local industrialist William Rand Kenan Sr., the stadium was re-dedicated in honor of his son William R. Kenan Jr. in 2018. In 2019, legendary head coach Mack Brown returned to the school where he first gained national prominence, leading the Tar Heels from 1988 to 1997 before winning the 2005 BCS National Championship with Texas.

UNC Tar Heels Football History

The University of North Carolina first fielded a varsity football team in 1888. John Heisman credited UNC with throwing the first forward pass in college football during an 1895 game against Georgia, leading to a touchdown which clinched a 6-0 victory over the Bulldogs. North Carolina has won nine conference championships: four in the Southern Conference, and five in the ACC, the most recent occurring in 1980. Many legendary players have played for the Tar Heels, including defensive ends William Fuller and Julius Peppers, and Pro Football Hall of Fame linebackers Lawrence Taylor and Chris Hanburger. In 2017, quarterback Mitchell Trubisky was selected with the second overall pick in the NFL Draft by the Chicago Bears, after throwing for 3,748 yards and 30 touchdowns in his junior season.

UNC's biggest rivalry by far is against the Duke Blue Devils, dating as far back as 1888 when Duke University was known as Trinity College. Since 1948, both teams have contested for the Victory Bell, which is painted in the winning team's color after each game. North Carolina also has spirited rivalries against its other in-state rivals, North Carolina State and Wake Forest, and participates in the South's Oldest Rivalry against the University of Virginia, which dates to 1892. North Carolina occasionally faces former ACC opponent South Carolina in the Battle of the Carolinas, with UNC beating the Gamecocks 24-20 in the opening week of 2019.

Out of the 5 years going to games at BOA Stadium, I've never been so close to the feild. Section 130, 4th row was awsome! Regular tickets would have cost me a fortune, but I got two tickets under $150. Not to mention I bought these tickets a week before the game.

We had a great time at the game! The food was fine and had a lot of fun. Just wish a different team had won!

Game was exciting. UNC got hosed again. 4th down offsides should have been a false start on Pitt. Did not enjoy NC State fans at the game pulling for Pitt. Disappointed to see UNC play so hard and have that call as well as poor coaching decisions beat them. Just made a frustrating season more frustrating. Ruined my Christmas.

    Carolina is 0-3

by UNCC73 on 12/27/09Bank of America Stadium - Charlotte

It was a good game to watch but I wish Carolina had won. It was fun to sit on the lower level since I normally sit on the upper level for Carolina Panther games.

The pre-game activities were not very good--very muddy. Costs in the stadium were terrible (7.00 personal pan pizza). Band performance was terrible at half-time. Overall, game was good.

    Meineke Car Care Bowl

by Koronin on 12/27/09Bank of America Stadium - Charlotte

The Meineke Car Care Bowl was a great game. We really enjoyed the very competitive game. The weather was not bad, although on the cold side, it was not windy. The game came down to the last few seconds to determine a winner. We had a great time. Bank of America stadium is also a great place to watch a game at. The views from the upper level are great.

    great event

by randun on 12/27/09Bank of America Stadium - Charlotte

great event, enthusiastic crowd, marvelous venue!! only criticisms-very little support from the city of charlotte in the way of transportation. why not provide shuttle buses from concord mills or lowes speeday from the north and carowinds from the south to make it easier to get tot he stadium? also, food and beer prices in stadium were outrageous. eat before you go. $6.25 for a bottle of beer is ridiculous.

    Except for the outcome...

by FrankBama on 12/27/09Bank of America Stadium - Charlotte

Charlotte was hospitable, parking was easy, and everything was great, except for the attendance (you should NOT invite a team 2 years in a row), and the result of the game. Also, please do NOT schedule the game on December 26. A weekday is better than the day after Christmas. Most of us have family obligations, and would rather take vacation time from work to attend a weekday BOWL game.

    Game was exciting

by satmanjoe1 on 12/27/09Bank of America Stadium - Charlotte

The crowd was smaller than last year but likely because it was the day after Christmas. There was a large UNC crowd and a moderate Pitt contengent. The game was close and not a run-away and entertaining. This was my third Meineke Bowl and I will likely go again next year as it is convenient and affordable.

    A first class game

by cutlgtn on 12/27/09Bank of America Stadium - Charlotte

The Meineke Car Care Bowl is one of the best non BCS bowls around. Good matchups and always well organized. Easy access to / from stadium, plenty of parking, and good people to help you if needed.
