UConn Huskies Men’s Basketball History

The UConn Huskies men’s basketball team is a big reason why Connecticut has earned its nickname as “The Basketball Capital of the World.” Since the Huskies’ first season in 1900, UConn has captured six National Championships, along with 34 conference regular season titles and 11 conference tournament championships.

Launched as a conference member in the Athletic League of New England State Colleges, UConn helped form the New England Conference in 1923 and continued to the Yankee Conference from 1946 to 1976. After a handful of unaffiliated seasons, UConn became a founding member of the Big East Conference in 1979, and after a stretch in The American Athletic Conference starting in 2013, rejoined the Big East in 2020. UConn’s membership in the Big East alone accounts for 11 regular season conference wins and eight conference tournament crowns.

Across UConn’s 37 NCAA Tournament appearances, the Huskies have advanced to seven Final Fours. The team’s National Championship wins in 2023 and 2024 made UConn the eighth school to win back-to-back tournaments. Aside from March Madness, the Huskies men’s basketball team has appeared in the National Invitation Tournament 13 times and won in 1988.

Notable alumni include Ray Allen, Caron Butler, Ben Gordon, Richard Hamilton, Clifford Robinson and Kemba Walker.

UConn Huskies Men’s Basketball at Harry A. Gampel Pavilion and PeoplesBank Arena

The UConn men’s basketball team split home games between Harry A. Gampel Pavilion on the University of Connecticut campus in Storrs and PeoplesBank Arena in Hartford. Each season, the home schedule is divided approximately in half between the two venues. The tradition began in 1975 when PeoplesBank Arena, then known as Hartford Civic Center, opened and was paired with UConn’s previous on-campus arena, the Hugh S. Greer Field House. Gampel Pavilion inherited the shared schedule when it opened in 1990. Inside the Huskies’ two home arenas, Gampel Pavilion seats more than 10,000 guests, while PeoplesBank Arena holds a capacity of nearly 16,000 for basketball games.

people are funny... a lot of fans in the arena for the Huskies but they were very quiet! Its a great place to watch sports or a concert.. Looking forward to next year and hoping the tix prices will come down so I can get closer to the action!

  • Hopefully an annual event.

Great venue for Basketball. Wonderful for locals in Fairfield County. Looking forward to seeing the Women play on January 11.

  • UConn in Bridgeport

    by Shopgirl114 on 1/1/14Webster Bank Arena - BridgeportRating: 4 out of 5

It was great to go to a UConn game in Bridgeport. It was so convenient. Harbor Yard is a great venue. Wish they had more games here. Can't wait to go see the women play on Jan. 11. The only negative was the price of parking. $20 was a little steep. $10 would have been so much more reasonable.

  • UCONN needs to play at Webster every year.

Great event, great venue, amazing scoreboard. Game was slow to begin, but, good second half.

  • Uconn at the Webster Arena

Excellent seating ....anywhere actually even if I hadn't bought tickets early.

Great game and great seats. Could practically step on the court. Great view and great time. Would defiantly do it again.

  • Family Affair

by PopeFrancis on 1/1/14Webster Bank Arena - BridgeportRating: 4 out of 5

Glad to see UConn outreach to Fairfield County and number of families with young children the game game attracted.

I bought these tickets for my son for Xmas. The seats were great right behind the announcers bench right at the mid court line 1st row. It was our 1st time at Webster Bank Arena, the parking was great and even the food was better than other places we have gone to watch Uconn.

  • UConn Men's Hoop Game

    by UConn95 on 1/1/14Webster Bank Arena - BridgeportRating: 4 out of 5

Venue is great, intimate. Overall a nice place to see a game and kid friendly. Even the highest seats are still a great view to the court. Only spot to avoid is directly behind the baskets as the seats are flat on the floor so after the first couple rows it would be tough to see. I would have rated a 5 out of 5 but parking was $20 and getting out of the parking lot was a nightmare. There were no attendants organizing and directing cars out of the lot yet there were police officers everywhere directing traffic AFTER you finally got out of the lot where there was no help needed at that point. It was like a cattle herd or cars. I hope we can get more UConn games here so the Fairfleld County crowd can see more games live.

  • Excellent Venue

    by Monkey605 on 1/1/14Webster Bank Arena - BridgeportRating: 5 out of 5

The Webster arena is a great venue for a game. All seats provide a good view. The game was great and it is nice to have UConn closer.

Not a bad seat in the place. Much better than XL center

  • Bridgeport responds as UCONN host

    by MrMac1934 on 12/31/13Webster Bank Arena - BridgeportRating: 4 out of 5

A great afternoon of college basketball was enjoyed by a full house of fans! The hotdogs were great. Surprisingly, I found the roast beef carving station the tastiest food item @ half time. The seating was visually good no matter where you were situated in the arena. The police, security & usher personnel were courteous, friendly & helpful.

  • Great Time!

  • Huskies conquer

Well organized first run at 'big time' men's basketball for the arena. Well done!

  • The game was great because they won

The game was great but for the price of the seats we couldn't see much

  • Uconn Game = No Juice

    by Waggs78 on 12/31/13Webster Bank Arena - BridgeportRating: 2 out of 5

It's unfortunate that the Fairfield County "wine and cheese" crowd decided to come out in full force. If I wanted a game with no juice, could have gone to the XL Center to watch them sleepwalk through a game against University of Hartford. The Webster Arena should have made a major marketing push to get Uconn students from the area who were coming home on semester break to show up in large numbers. I'd have paid an extra 10 bucks a ticket to subsidize lower cost tickets for students in order to get some life in the arena. Also wouldn't hurt to have them playing a bit more competitive an opponent.

Webster Bank Arena is a great setting for a basketball game.

  • Good game, but no reason to double parking price

    by fan262 on 12/31/13Webster Bank Arena - BridgeportRating: 4 out of 5

The UCONN game was a good one…nice to see them in Fairfield County. I hope they come back. We were at the Arena just two nights earlier for a hockey game. Parking in the garage was $10 and raised to $20 on Saturday. I get the joke, but really--it's unnecessary and so we walked in from downtown on principle alone. Glad it was a nice day out. We have tickets for another event in January…will be interesting to see what they do with parking prices...
