About

UCLA Bruins Men's Basketball History

The UCLA Bruins played their first men’s basketball game in 1919, but the program did not take off until the legendary John Wooden took over as head coach in 1948. Wooden, nicknamed the Wizard of Westwood, remained at the school until 1975 and put together a historic tenure, racking 10 NCAA titles in 12 years, seven of them consecutively.

The UCLA Bruins hold a number of records in men's basketball thanks to Wooden’s dominant years at helm, including 11 NCAA titles, the most of any school. The Bruins have won four conference titles and 38 regular-season conference championships, mostly in the Pac-12, where they've been a member since 1928.

Many UCLA Bruins have gone on to play in the NBA and become basketball legends. These include six-time NBA Champion, six-time MVP, and 19-time NBA All-Star Kareem Abdul-Jabar, who played in three of the Bruins' NCAA Championships. UCLA's other five Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame winners are Don Barksdale, Gail Goodrich, Reggie Miller, Bill Walton and Jamaal Wilkes, and the very long list of other notable NBA players who are UCLA alums includes Baron Davis, Trevor Ariza, Kevin Love, Russell Westbrook, Matt Barnes, Kevon Looney and Lonzo Ball.

UCLA has a long-running crosstown rivalry with fellow Pac-12 member University of Southern California, and its rivalry with close Pac-12 competitor the Arizona Wildcats is one of the most closely watched in men's college basketball. The Bruins' rivalry with the Notre Dame Fighting Irish goes back to the John Wooden days.

    Go Bruins!

by Gillda on 1/8/17Pauley Pavilion - Los Angeles

A fun team to watch, and Pauley doesn't have a bad seat. However, plan on taking extra time to go in--remember, no purses are allowed in--and don't plan on eating while there. They have food trucks in addition to the regular fare, but lines are so long and the game so fast that it isn't wise to try to get some of the food.

    Exciting Basketball

by Bruingal1976 on 12/13/16Pauley Pavilion - Los Angeles

I'm a Bruin Alum of the 70's when UCLA Basketball was the thing. I'd go to the games to see how much UCLA would beat the opposing team by not who would win because that was practically a given. I'm looking forward to seeing Pauley like that again, because there's nothing like a good UCLA basketball victory in Pauley Pavilion.

Pauley Pavillion a shrine to championships

by bittledit on 11/24/16Pauley Pavilion - Los Angeles

I gave my tickets to a father and son combo w ho had never seen a college game, much less a college game in fabled Pauley Pavillion. To them it was going to church. They were just thrilled to be able to attend a game there and at a cost of nothing to them. It was a nite to remember for father and 14 year old son. Since one of the UCLA players father was a good friend of the father, the son was able to visit the UCLA locker room following the game and of course, the thrill of his life. So the tickets could not have ended up in better hands allowing a life time experience for father and son.

    Fun

by KendallsDad on 11/16/16Pauley Pavilion - Los Angeles

It is fun to get into a college setting and attending a college basketball game is one way to do it.. A basketball game at Pauley Pavilion is historical and fun and, now that it has been spruced up, comfortable with great sight lines. I recommend attending even if you are not a UCLA fan. The basketball is good and exciting, and if you have kids, they will have fun being there.

A Little Disappointed after all the Hypes

by bassvista on 11/16/16Pauley Pavilion - Los Angeles

I had high expectations on this team after reading about all the hypes and the success of the first games. What I saw for the first half was anything but a great team. The team defense was not good. The CSUN players had too many open shots. The 3-point shooting was not as good as published. The players do not seem to play with any intensity. The team did come back quite good at the second half, but I was expecting more. I am not sure how this team will do against a higher ranked team

    Pauley Pavilion Staff was unprepared

by Bruinmark on 11/14/16Pauley Pavilion - Los Angeles

It pains me to write such a negative review, but it is with the hope that no one has to experience what many did Friday night. There was a problem with the print at home tickets where the scanner read "wrong date." instead of recognizing that it was a glitch in their system, staff had each patron wait in the ticket line outside to be issued hard tickets that could be scanned, but we were to sit in the seats issued, which we could have done in the first place. Not to mention that we had to wait in the entry line a second time to enter the arena. Once inside, the concession stands were not prepared for the crowd. Stands appeared understaffed and food and water was not reasy for the crowd. I got to the game one hour early and ended up missing the first three minutes of the game. At least the CPK manager tried to make it better by delivering my two cheese pizzas directly to my seat after I waited for 15 minutes. They also delivered some chocolate chip cookies, which was a nice gesture. I felt bad for the workers because it clearly was not their fault. This was a result of poor preparation and communication. I hope to attend more games this year as the team looks outstanding, but I am not confident with Pauley Pavilion management.
