UCLA Bruins Men's Basketball History

The UCLA Bruins played their first men’s basketball game in 1919, but the program did not take off until the legendary John Wooden took over as head coach in 1948. Wooden, nicknamed the Wizard of Westwood, remained at the school until 1975 and put together a historic tenure, racking 10 NCAA titles in 12 years, seven of them consecutively.

The UCLA Bruins hold a number of records in men's basketball thanks to Wooden’s dominant years at helm, including 11 NCAA titles, the most of any school. The Bruins have won four conference titles and 38 regular-season conference championships, mostly in the Pac-12, where they've been a member since 1928.

Many UCLA Bruins have gone on to play in the NBA and become basketball legends. These include six-time NBA Champion, six-time MVP, and 19-time NBA All-Star Kareem Abdul-Jabar, who played in three of the Bruins' NCAA Championships. UCLA's other five Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame winners are Don Barksdale, Gail Goodrich, Reggie Miller, Bill Walton and Jamaal Wilkes, and the very long list of other notable NBA players who are UCLA alums includes Baron Davis, Trevor Ariza, Kevin Love, Russell Westbrook, Matt Barnes, Kevon Looney and Lonzo Ball.

UCLA has a long-running crosstown rivalry with fellow Pac-12 member University of Southern California, and its rivalry with close Pac-12 competitor the Arizona Wildcats is one of the most closely watched in men's college basketball. The Bruins' rivalry with the Notre Dame Fighting Irish goes back to the John Wooden days.

Was fun taking my Grandsons to see the UCLA Basketball game. Would do it more often or every year if it was not so expensive.

We really enjoyed our time at Pauley Pavilion watching UCLA vs. Cal. The game was exciting, the fans were energized and the entertainment during breaks and half time was really good.

    Bruins-Trees

by UclaGirlie on 1/11/15Pauley Pavilion - Los Angeles

Pauley is one of the greatest basketball venues. This game was like watching paint dry until the last few minutes of regulation. Bruins are awesome. Steve Alford is a terrible coach and I was suprised to see Johnny Dawkins still has a job at Stanford!

    Zags Look Solid

by hugh31 on 12/16/14Pauley Pavilion - Los Angeles

Pauley Pavilion is a great place to see a game. The crowd was excellent. It was a competitive game. Getting in and out of the stadium was relatively easy. Number 9 ranked Gonzaga is very solid defensively, with several offensive weapons. Look for them to go deep into the NCAA tournament in 2015.

    Grandsons loved it

by wyndwalk3r on 12/13/14Pauley Pavilion - Los Angeles

Once a year I take the grandkids to a game. They are becoming big UCLA fans. We eat dinner on campus and then root the team on in Pauley. Fortunately we usually win. Great family night out.

UC-SD at UCLA basketball on 12-07-2014

by CC4TM on 12/11/14Pauley Pavilion - Los Angeles

We sat in the Lower Bowl, but close to the main vending. A sparse crowd for this non-PAC12 game gave us plenty of room to spread out. It was a real treat to see a game in historic Pauley Pavilion, for my first time. The UCLA campus is beautiful, as was the weather.

    Pauley Pavilion is Great

by DasRooster on 12/10/14Pauley Pavilion - Los Angeles

Just about every seat in the venue is good. And how can you not get excited when you are part of history at that venue. The renovation is solid. The seats and view lines are great. Top notch experience.

John Wooden lives on in Pauley Pavilion

by Gomediapro on 12/10/14Pauley Pavilion - Los Angeles

We enjoyed Junior Bruin Day at the UCLA game with our kids at Pauley Pavilion. What a beautiful venue and there isn't a bad seat in the house! Love the way all the history and memorabilia is displayed and it is so clean. The kids got to take pictures with Joe Bruin, some of the UCLA cheerleaders and were even allowed to shoot a free throw on John Wooden court after the game. All in all it was a memorable experience!

    Quality outing

by MtBaldy7511 on 11/3/14Pauley Pavilion - Los Angeles

There is a marked difference in the length and athleticism between a good NCAA Division I team and a good Division II team. The D II team seemed more organized and committed to running their offense while the D I team depended on their athleticism to overcome the opponents fairly organized and committed man defense. Boards went to the taller UCLA team, but, the screening out commitment of APU was evident. UCLA's speed and quickness was not a factor on the running game. APU got back and thwarted most breaks. If UCLA was as well coached and committed to both running their offense as well as playing good team, tenacious defense as APU was, then the Bruins would be in every ball game and could vie for a deep NCAA run. However, there needs to be more of a focused commitment on their part. They mentally "wander" in and out of the ball game, which will be a challenge for the Bruin coaching staff.

I love the way they redid Pauley Pavilion! There is so much history and they've done a great job of maintaining the old but bringing in some new entertaining features.

    New Pauley Pavilion is Awesome!

by Greenskeeper on 2/18/14Pauley Pavilion - Los Angeles

On Feb 15, I made my first visit to Pauley Pavilion since the updates were made and I was blown away! The arena is excellent from the new scoreboard to the fact that most seats were very good! I am a UCLA basketball fan living in Columbus, OH so I do not get to a lot of "home" games. But when I do, they always deliver. Thank you to the Bruins! Nice job on your 80-66 win over Utah on Saturday!
