What a wonderful play!! The actors were fantastic - wonderfuluu singing, great story line!!
First about the venue: this was my first time to the Verizon Theater. Parking is $15 (VIP is $30 - but general parking and VIP are in the same area). When you first walk in the main lobby is spacious room for a large volume of people to wait until the play starts. there's a concession area, where we ordered our drinks.. Very pricey ($15 for a vodka cranberry, $9 for draft beer), but the pour on the vodka was very good and in a fancy glass. (not just a cheap clear disposable cup).
The restrooms were very clean and plenty of them, so your not waiting long if you really have to go. :)
The attendants helped us to our seats (which had cup holders - cool). We were in the lower 100 section. Great view of the stage! Seats were comfortable.
Now on the the Play: We were a little hesitant on going, b/c we didn't recognize some of the actors (little familar with Palmer Williams).. But all of them did a Great job!
There were minimal stage set changes (I think only 2 sets) which helped the scenes flow quickly and easily. Very well designed.. It didn't look cheap (Like your just putting a sofa and tree and actors on stage). It was really a nicely built out scene set, which swiveled to the next scene. I hadn't been to a play in a long tme and I thought that the swivel concept and design was great for this play.
To give you an idea, one scene had like a mini-dinng area, then the family room w/fireplace, then there was a staircase. At the top of the staircase to the left is a bedroom, to the right is a mini hallway to another room. It furnishings reflected an upscale home. The next stage set wasn't as complex, but that's b/c it reflected the (have not) home style (but had 3 separate scene areas, bedroom, fam room and mini kitchen).
The story line was well thought out. Tyler Perry used the right balance of humor, drama and conflict and wonderful spiritual message that the actors helped bring to life thru their punch lines and wonderful singing. It was the right balance of singing. And the humor wasnt' that ...soo over the top - trying to make it funnier than what it is! - cause it was just really funny!!
This is a storyline that many can relate to (or relate to one of the characters). What a powerful message about love, trust, respect and family values with a spritual message.
Grandma Hattie was hilarious!! This is a must see play for those TP fans, you will not be disappointed. Enjoy!
