Tropidelic in Concert
Tropidelic are surefire party-starters, talented instrumentalists, and an easy answer to the question of whether there are any good reggae bands from Cleveland, Ohio. The group â comprised of singer Matthew Roads, trombone player James Begin, guitarist Bobby Chronic, drummer Darrick Willis, trumpet player Derek McBryde, and bassist David Pags â formed in 2008 on the campus of Kent State University. They didn't have the horn section yet, but they still became college favorites, and they continued their success by moving to Cleveland after graduation.Â
At the time, no one in the city sounded quite like Tropidelic. Their sound has always been rooted in warm, groove-heavy reggae, but they quickly added funk, hip-hop, and even a little rock to their repertoire. They debuted this fusion on âRebirth of the Dope,' their self-released first EP, and sold 10,000 copies at concerts and street corners around the Midwest. âAll Heads Unite,' their first album, came out in 2011, and they've followed it with four more: âPolice State,' âGo Down With the Ship,' âThe Hard North,' and âHeavy Is the Head.'Â
âPolice State,' from 2015, was the breakthrough, mixing chill beats with serious lyrics about the personal ("Alcoholic") and the political ("Police State," inspired by an incident in which cops raided their practice space because of an incorrect warrant). On "Alcoholic," they were joined by Bumpin Uglies, who have since taken the younger band under their wing â and along on several tours.Â
This is a group of self-described road dogs, and they've brought their sound outside Cleveland city limits as part of Warped Tour and Electric Forest, and in support of acts like Slightly Stoopid and 311. Closer to home, they host the annual Freakstomp Music Festival, helping Ohio unlock its inner reggae jam-band vibrations. Their next album is set to be released in the spring of 2019, and they post on Instagram and Twitter as @Tropidelic.

Tropidelic, Passafire, and Mooky were top notch acts at the beautiful Cleveland House Of Blues! Unfortunately, to make extra money from showgoers, the event ended just after midnight then there was a surcharge for the rest of the event! I never have been to a show on New Yearâs Eve that ended at 12:15 just so they could charge me to see the actual end of the show.
Tropidelic brings variety of age groups and a good crowd if you need to blow off steam. They well definitely get you dancing!! HOB Security was there right away when something happened in the crowd and kept everyone safe. Door monitors where very nice but kind of shy when giving directions. Definitely could have better drink prices also. Fun event for a special occasion Forsure! Recommended đ€đŒ #tropi-holic
I enjoy HOB. Tropidelic goes hard but also brings a good crowd if you need to blow off steam. Security was there right away when something happened in the crowd and kept everyone safe. Door monitors where very nice but kind of shy when giving directions. Definitely could have better drink prices also. Fun event for a special occasion Forsure!
I have seen 1000s of live bands in almost all of the lower 48 states. This is hands down, the best live band performance I have ever seen in my life!!!
The show was an overall great time, great music, great place!
Great show! The friendliest band youâll meet! If you havenât seen them, you are missing out on the best time ever!!!
Seriously if you cannot see this band Live I don't know what you're waiting for, they've been on the best show.
You may not know that your life is missing anything, but, if you haven't seen a Tropidelic show, it is. These guys are, hands down, one of the best and most entertaining bands I've seen. Their music is great, they sound great, they are a lot of fun to watch, and they appeal to all types of music lovers. I've brought my mom, mother-in-law, brother, and several friends (all have different music preferences), and they all loved it and had a great time! And, we are all looking forward to seeing them again soon.
Band was amazing! Second time seeing them. Awesome. Venue was a good size that you were able to walk around and not feel too crowded but intimate enough to feel you were a part of the band.
I will never miss a Trop show again. If theyâre within driving distance, Iâm going.
Best concert experience ever. Tropidelic always brings an insane amount of energy

Great show, Band is always so energetic. Always gets the crowd moving. Wish they played more shows in the Cleveland area but they are very special and I would highly recommend seeing them at any venue. House of Blues was packed and it was epic.
Best band in the world right now. They always put on an amazing show filled with energy. The coolest people who will actually talk to their fans. Had Balcony seats for this SOLD OUT show and it was one of the best ever. If you have not seen or listened to them yet please check them out.
