Tool on Tour
Nothing about Tool's dark, prog-leaning music is orthodox — and neither are the rock band's concerts. Unlike most vocalists, Maynard James Keenan prefers to hang back away from the front of the stage. Sometimes he's shrouded in darkness, and other times he's illuminated by colorful, immersive videos — and lets his bandmates take center stage. That frees up Tool's instrumentalists to let loose. Drummer Danny Carey pounds away with both finesse and aggression on a massive rig, while guitarist Adam Jones and bassist Justin Chancellor thrash and slash in mesmerizing ways.
Tool are no strangers to the road. In fact, they've learned from the best. In the 1990s, the band toured with groups like Corrosion of Conformity, Rage Against the Machine, and White Zombie, but grew popular enough to headline Lollapalooza 1997 and even do gigs with heroes King Crimson in the early '00s. These days, Tool are known for headlining festivals like Epicenter and Chicago Open Air — that is, when they're not headlining (and filling) arenas on their own tours.
Tool in Concert
Tool have their roots in Los Angeles. Frontman Maynard James Keenan moved to the city in the late '80s and, after a stint playing with costumed rockers Green Jellÿ, linked up with drummer Danny Carey and guitarist Adam Jones.
Together, the newly christened Tool made enigmatic rock music that incorporated elements of metal and prog and tackled somber subject matter in their lyrics and with elaborate, artistic music videos. The group's music resonated with audiences: Breakthrough songs such as "Sober" and "Stinkfist" were Top 20 rock radio hits, while 1996's Ænima LP peaked at No. 2 on the charts and included "Ænema," which won the 1998 Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance.
Tool took home another trophy in that category in 2002, when "Schism" won the prize. This win reflected that, unlike many of their '90s contemporaries, Tool saw their popularity only increase in the ‘00s. Both 2001's Lateralus and 2006's 10,000 Days hit No. 1 on Billboard's album charts, while "Schism" and "Vicarious" topped out at No. 2 on the rock charts — paving the way for Tool's first chart-topping tune on rock radio, 2006's "The Pot."
Tool is the best live act to see… what an experience. Absolutely incredible.
Pure magnificence! These guys get better every time I see them. Since the first time in 92 in that small club in San Bernadino. Every song played was brilliant and the show was amazing. The crowd was awesome too.
Tool is my favorite band, however his heart wasn’t in it, I don’t know maybe he just doesn’t like Fresno. The sound was off, vocals were distorted more than the band makes them. The volume was near deafening. Otherwise the display/light show was awesome, song selection wasn’t what I expected, they pulled out some beloved classics. Will I see them again absolutely, will I see them in Fresno probably not, even though it’s my hometown.
Don’t let this heavy metal genre of music dissuade you from a Tool concert…if you at all appreciate music in a classical sense, you will be blown away by the genius of their music. They are uber talented, highly creative and technical musicians. What a TREAT to experience them live. The performance and visual effects were outstanding.
Awesome!!!! I really loved the visual part of the show. Tool never disappoints. My favorite band of all time.
The full Tool experience is a performance like no other. Entrancing video, excellent musicianship, lasers, and even some tactile effects enhance the already powerful event. Even though the concert was very expensive, it was worthwhile to get to enjoy this as a once-in-a-lifetime treat! Know that the band does not allow recording or photography and has additional event staff patrolling the crowd.
Deep cuts and all the new stuff 2 hours of sonic bliss. Tool is cool
Went both nights and didn’t disappoint. What each member does is amazing even though I enjoy AJ the most. These guys are getting older but can still hang. Saw them all 5x in Phoenix for FI tour and night 2 was top 2 imo.
11/10 on the show. The visuals were top notch and the bind was completely on point. How many bands can play full live like that for so long? Not many that’s for sure.
Tool is so interesting on all levels. The fact that they brought out Elder to open proves what nice guys they are. Big bands used to help out smaller bands. Tool has always done that. The Fresno CA show was incredible. Tool delivered art, music, beauty and a cell phone free concert expirence. Elder weaves intricate melodies with crushing grooves. What a expirence.
Tool is an experience. If you have Not seen them Live, you should! Hands down one of the Best Live Shows!
Tool is over the top awesome! This show was the best!
This band is my absolute favorite but they're concerts are on another level beyond perfection. They always put on a excellent light show. I hope they will make it to Fresno CA again.
Save Mart Center needs a new roof! TOOL set it on fire. Opener Elder was spectacular as well! TOOL are aging like a fine wine!!!🤟🏽💜
The band the crowd!! No personality, just boring! Would never see Tool again!!
Show was ok. Songs played weren’t their best. Security constantly shined flashlights in our eyes to see if we were recording which sucked.
TOOL rocked the show. They sounded great! Newer mix of the setlist. I think a lot of us might have enjoyed a couple more of the older hits like Aenema, Sober, and Schism. We did get Pneuma and Stinkfist, and they sounded great! TOOL always provides a unique experience.
Never saw a band that plays like the studio record's… amazing show
It was a great show especially since no one was blocking my view by trying to take pictures the whole concert. Thank you Maynard.
It’s hard to fault them, they’re great musicians and Maynard’s voice is still great, but somehow the whole show ended up being a boring experience, there was nothing exciting about it!
