I went to the Tony Awards both this and last year. I enjoyed them both and will admit that the musical numbers this year were overshadowed by that of last year, especially the opening. However, despite that, I would have to say that this year was slightly more enjoyable than last since Hugh Jackman was able to connect to the audience well. For example, Hugh Jackman came up to the 2nd mezzanine during break and started singing with us, something that Neil did not do. This was one of the many ways that Hugh Jackman connected with us better than Neil did. Both were great hosts, but while Neil is able to pull off more flashy performances, Hugh is able to paint himself as the common man and create that connection with the audience, which I think is quintessential for the theater experience.
