Tonic Sol-fa in Concert
Tonic Sol-fa has established itself not only as the most in-demand vocal group in the Midwest, but also one of the most successful independent acts in America. In addition to substantial album sales of its own independent releases (2,000,000 copies sold), the group has toured extensively throughout the US and abroad, building their financial base with a steady list of festivals and private shows that eventually led to numerous sold-out tours of theaters and small arenas.
Tonic Sol-fa began at St. John's University in Central Minnesota and includes lead vocalist Shaun Johnson, tenor and vocal percussionist, Greg Bannwarth, baritone and percussionist/vocal percussionist, Theo Brown, and bass, Jared Dove. Together the group reached national prominence with appearances on NBC's Today Show and in Newsweek magazine. Along the way, they shared the stage with a number of recognizable performers including Jay Leno, Jeff Foxworthy and Weird Al Yankovic, and were recently inducted in the Minnesota Music Hall of Fame alongside Prince.
From the group's onset, the members have overseen and operated the business of Tonic Sol-fa with a only a small team of driven supporters acting as managers, lawyers, and publicists, and increased revenue from a few thousand dollars in their first year to a multi-million dollar limited liability company. The group overcame a number of obstacles, including an unspoken apprehension to a cappella acts by individuals in the music industry and having a name that was anything but catchy (a system of naming the notes of the scale, usually do, re, mi, fa, sol, la, ti, developed to teach singing). Still, the group persevered, recording and manufacturing its own records and selling them to a growing legion of fans via the Internet and social networking sites, in the lobby of the theaters where they performed, and through a growing national distribution. One could say they gained their current consumer popularity the old fashioned way; they earned it.
At present, Tonic Sol-fa is putting the finishing touches on an album of requested originals, a collaborative recording in a catalog of numerous award-winning DVD and CD projects highlighting four indelible voices. This outstanding blend has resulted in multiple Contemporary A cappella Recording Awards, NACA (National Association of Collegiate Activities) Entertainer of the Year nominations, considerable national press, and has landed their music on the best-selling seasonal DVD at Wal-Mart, The 12 Dogs of Christmas.
Further Tonic Sol-fa has released three television specials, which have aired over 1800 times in forty-seven states and Canada. The new PBS special will be shown through 2020, continuing to spread Tonic Sol-fa's unique sound to an ever-growing audience.
Tonic Sol-fa continues to tour, record, and conscientiously run their business in the only way familiar to them – differently.

The best Christmas presentation I seen in a long time and the comedy was great.
Uplifting entertainment at its best! We kept thinking of other friends that would have loved it as well. We will be back next year:). We sang all the way home.
These four young men from the midwest sing a capella with a flair and style all their own. They're not quite on the musical level of the Nylons, but they're solid and professional musically. They sing with passion, and you see immediately that they love what they are doing. You also see that they are having a hell of a lot of fun, and they take the audience along with them. Don't miss Tonic Solfa if they perform near you!
Show was awesome. My friend and I were new to their sounds and really enjoyed the show. We didn't realize how much audience participation there would be but had a great time participating.
Fourth time we have seen these guys. Very talented goup of down-to-earth people just like us. Feels like we are being entertained at home. Left with a good feeling and will go see them again. Highly recommed for entire family!!
Tonic Sol Fa went above and beyond what I expected! They were amazing!!!
This was my first time seeing this group, and after seeing Bon Jovi, AC/DC and Muse in concert, I was a little skeptical of this group. They rocked right along with all the others. The way their lead singer feels the music is unforgettable, as are the other members of the group. If you have not seen these guys and are in the mood for some good music, go see them!
The show was absolutely amazing. I have seen them before and every year that I return, I bring new people with me and they love it as much as I do. They were funny as well as the arrangement of music was great. I love Christmas and the different variations of Christmas songs is always a joy to listen to.
GREAT holiday concert - swaying was a little much - but the new songs are GREAT! Love the plastic santa and tights sences! Like the mixture of christmas and regular music
Awesome as always! They never cease to entertain!!!
very energetic and great vocals! Wished to hear more Holiday songs tho.
We saw Tonic Sol-Fa for the first time and were blown away at the great concert they give! We will definitely see them again and soon!
This was my second year for Tonic Sol-Fa. It was wonderful!!! It was entertaining!!! And, it was exciting!!! Tonic Sol-Fa is as unpredictable and funny with their audience involvement, as they are predictable and "Emmy award winning" with the awesome sound they create!!! I'll be back next year!!! I've shared Tonic Sol-Fa's music with friends this holiday season, and they are ready to become lifelong concert goers as well!!! Can't wait till next year!!!
The concert was AMAZING!! The God given ability the men have to sing acapella is awesome. It sounds like there is a background playing with them but it is their voices! I will come back next year and bring more people.
Dissappointment is the only word that comes to mind. 2 years ago we saw Tonic Sol-fa at Hoyt Sherman and were blown away by their style and energy. The show this time lacked the energy that so endeared us to them before. Their choice of music was less than stellar and the few songs they used from past performances lacked the style of the past. I know they have a great performance in them as they have won an Emmy. Too bad they did not bring an Emmy performance to Des Moines. Better luck next time.
Tonic Sol-Fa has become a holiday tradition for us. Four years ago wewent to our first concert and at the time had never even heard of them. Now, my husband and I buy our tickets as soon as possible in August or September and it is the highlight of our holiday season. I listen to their Christmas CD's almost exclusively throughout the season and their other CD's all year. Of the four concerts we have been to, this year's was quite disappointing. The group is still fabulous but we were disappointed in the show itself. There was far more bantering with the audience and comedy routines than there were songs. The band did not seem to have the energy or enthusiasum this year that we ususally feel. We will continue to keep this in our holiday event schedule but really hope this was just an off year and they will return the show to the fantastic event it has been in the pase.
Tonic Sol Fa was fantastic, as always. They are awesome performers with a huge scope of talent. Each is unique in their own way and together they are one of the best groups ever.
We've been going to Tonic Sol-fa's Christmas show for years. It is not officially the Christmas holiday season until we see them! This year's show was awesome as always, but even more so! Love these guys! ALWAYS have these guys back! I love their music and their banter! Great!!
Great singing and entertainment for all. Got the audience involved
