About

Tonic Sol-fa in Concert

Tonic Sol-fa has established itself not only as the most in-demand vocal group in the Midwest, but also one of the most successful independent acts in America. In addition to substantial album sales of its own independent releases (2,000,000 copies sold), the group has toured extensively throughout the US and abroad, building their financial base with a steady list of festivals and private shows that eventually led to numerous sold-out tours of theaters and small arenas.

Tonic Sol-fa began at St. John's University in Central Minnesota and includes lead vocalist Shaun Johnson, tenor and vocal percussionist, Greg Bannwarth, baritone and percussionist/vocal percussionist, Theo Brown, and bass, Jared Dove. Together the group reached national prominence with appearances on NBC's Today Show and in Newsweek magazine. Along the way, they shared the stage with a number of recognizable performers including Jay Leno, Jeff Foxworthy and Weird Al Yankovic, and were recently inducted in the Minnesota Music Hall of Fame alongside Prince.

From the group's onset, the members have overseen and operated the business of Tonic Sol-fa with a only a small team of driven supporters acting as managers, lawyers, and publicists, and increased revenue from a few thousand dollars in their first year to a multi-million dollar limited liability company. The group overcame a number of obstacles, including an unspoken apprehension to a cappella acts by individuals in the music industry and having a name that was anything but catchy (a system of naming the notes of the scale, usually do, re, mi, fa, sol, la, ti, developed to teach singing). Still, the group persevered, recording and manufacturing its own records and selling them to a growing legion of fans via the Internet and social networking sites, in the lobby of the theaters where they performed, and through a growing national distribution. One could say they gained their current consumer popularity the old fashioned way; they earned it.

At present, Tonic Sol-fa is putting the finishing touches on an album of requested originals, a collaborative recording in a catalog of numerous award-winning DVD and CD projects highlighting four indelible voices. This outstanding blend has resulted in multiple Contemporary A cappella Recording Awards, NACA (National Association of Collegiate Activities) Entertainer of the Year nominations, considerable national press, and has landed their music on the best-selling seasonal DVD at Wal-Mart, The 12 Dogs of Christmas.

Further Tonic Sol-fa has released three television specials, which have aired over 1800 times in forty-seven states and Canada. The new PBS special will be shown through 2020, continuing to spread Tonic Sol-fa's unique sound to an ever-growing audience.

Tonic Sol-fa continues to tour, record, and conscientiously run their business in the only way familiar to them – differently.

  • Tonic Sol Fa always has an awesome show

by carabear207 on 12/21/09Orpheum Theatre Sioux City - Sioux CityRating: 5 out of 5

Tonic Sol Fa not only has wonderful voices but they put on an awesome show too. Many acts are boring to watch but they are hilarious and continue to add goofy humor to their shows. I also appreciate that it is family friendly...I'd be willing to take anybody who appreciates music. The lighting is good. I'm glad that it isn't overwhelming like some shows I've been to. Sometimes it's too much but not with their group.

Tonic Sol-Fa! What a great performance! The guys are remarkable with only their voices. This was the second time I have seen them perform and it won't be the last. The holiday show was a real treat for all ages. Please do your best to get this group back next year. A very entertaining evening.

This was my first Tonic Sol Fa concert, and I was just amazed how well they had sung without any instruments! Their voices were heavenly! I will definitely be back to see them again next time they are in town and I will recommend them to others!

  • Very disappointed

by Kubota on 12/21/09HOYT SHERMAN PLACE - Des MoinesRating: 2 out of 5

As usual, the vocal blend was fantastic. We were very disappointed this time with the selection of songs; the non-holiday songs were sad or left one saying "what's the point?" There needed to be more Christmas songs -- it's a holiday concert. Shawn mannerisms are becoming more and more "affected" and it was such a real turn off to us. In order to enjoy the songs, one has to close their eyes and just listen. He's completely distracting and inappropriate. Our guests, who were there for the first time, mentioned numerous times -- why does he have to do that? They won't return. Although the songs are musically right on, the notes are nearly always rock solid, and the harmonies are great, there's no interpretation, no dynamics, no feeling -- just rote performance. All the songs have the same feel, the same type of arrangement with percussive feel throughout; that gets really old. There are so many awesome a capella arrangements that could be done with incredible harmonies and the four of you could do them so well -- you need variety. The added humor is helpful, but there's not a thread through the concert. One leaves saying, "wow, they can really sing," but there's no impact. When we came two years ago, we wanted to see you again. This time was enough, and we won't be recommending it to others. As a vocal music professional myself, I regret the negative nature of the review, but I also know that you can't appeal to everyone. I'm sure there are many others that enjoyed it thoroughly and we wish you the best.

  • Great Show

by matzke on 12/21/09HOYT SHERMAN PLACE - Des MoinesRating: 4 out of 5

Show was great like it was every year. We have been following Tonic Sol Fa for a long time and I don't think it was their best show. We all left feeling like it was good but not their best. It was a little short and they seem to do the same show. Different songs but always the same format..... Would like to see something different for a change. We do love them though and think they are great!

  • Excellant as always

Such a good family night out, we love these guys. My 13 year old son is inspired to stay in his school music program because these guys make it cool to sing. Thanks for inspiring our youth.

  • Tonic Sol Fa at Hoyt Sherman Place

by Baywindow on 12/20/09HOYT SHERMAN PLACE - Des MoinesRating: 5 out of 5

The show was very entertaining and would go again. The only downfall were the seats. We sat at the right hand side of the theather, second row, seats 4, 5, and 6. Since the show was set up by placing a huge speaker and a Christmas tree on the corner of the stage, our seats were obstructed. When placing my order for tickets if I would have known the seats would have been obtructed, I wouldn't have purchased them.

  • Tonic Sol-Fa was very uplifting

I have always enjoyed attending the Holiday Concert by Tonic Sol-Fa. It is always very energetic, humorous and still very seasonally inspiring with the beautiful blend of the four voices of Shawn, Greg, Mark, and Jarrod. It is always a treat to see what Plastic Santa will do or say.

This Christmas show was fanominal! These 4 good-looking guys can really sing! I have followed them for 3 years now. Seen them twice at the Folly this year and last year. And also saw them in Warrensburg, MO on the CMSU campus, They put on a clean yet very comical show. They appear to totally enjoy singing and entertaining us. I know they perform the same show every night during the Chrismas holiday on their tour, however they perform like it is their opening night every time!
