TOMMY JAMES AND THE SHONDELLS IN CONCERT:

The bubblegum pop movement of the '60s wouldn't have been the same without the beloved tunes of Tommy James and the Shondells, whose prominent music took off during the height of the era. It's been almost 50 years since the release of their 1966 debut Hanky Panky, but the band is still impressing audiences across the nation with their expansive catalog of upbeat classics. His voice still on-point and smooth as ever, Tommy James and the gang hit the road once again for a nostalgia-heavy 2014 tour.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

After dabbling in several musical projects as a preteen, Tommy James recorded his first demo "Hanky Panky" under the formal name The Shondells in 1964. The song wasn't an initial hit, but it achieved popularity the following year when it was unearthed by a local dance promoter, launching Tommy and the Shondells onto the music radar. Their 1966 debut album Hanky Panky skyrocketed the title single to commercial success, landing on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and garnering the band national attention. Seven more successful albums followed as Tommy and the Shondells racked up twelve Top 40 hits and another chart-topper, "Crimson and Clover." James set out on a solo venture in 1971, attaining success once more with 23 gold singles and nine gold and platinum-certified albums. Reunited in 2014, Tommy and the Shondells are ready to turn back the clock on a string of highly anticipated tour dates.

FANS WHO BOUGHT TICKETS SAY:

"What a fantastic show full of non-stop entertainment. The men were sensational with all their hits. They had on-tune harmonies and were very lively on stage."

"What a voice –Tommy James can sing, and he's an amazing performer and guitarist."

"This show was excellent! The best concert I have been to in a long time. Will go see him again when he comes back in town."

    Extremely entertaining show

    by paddler on 3/11/13Ho-Chunk Gaming-WI-Dells - Baraboo

All three acts were nostalgic and memorable. The musicians were amazing and I can not believe the stamina to keep doing this for that many years. Bill Medley had some issues with his voice but loved his stage presence and heart. The tribute to Bobby Hatfield was touching and his daughter McKenna was also very soulful-tribute to Etta James very good. The Buckingham's were excellent also, Loved reliving my past. And Tommy James was the highlight. His songs bring back my youth, his band was excellent too. They played most of the songs I wanted to hear. Missed Out of the Blue(my favorite) not a big hit tho. We were celebrating my friend birthday and she thoroughly enjoyed it. People watching was fun too.

The Buckinghams and Bill Medley were awesome. I didn't think that Tommy James and the Shondells were that good. Their volume was way to loud and it distorted all the words and it seemed like they were only into playing their guitars. Tommy had a lot of "classmates" in the audience so he actually stopped playing and went in the audience to meet and greet them while the band kept playing and then he went back on stage. There was not personal communication between him and the audience during the performance. Just went from song to song and done.

Bad Sound for Tommy, 5th Dimension were Great!

by Nikky55 on 7/27/12Heartland Events Center - Grand Island

I waited months for this concert and was disappointed with the sound. First of all it was WAY TOO LOUD, BEYOND DISTORTION. This contributed to the feedback problems and the constant squeal which was never corrected. I loved their playing all the old favorites but I'm glad I had the words memorized because I would have never understood them because of the way the sound was set. When Tommy went into the audience it was way too long. Maybe 5 minutes would have been long enough but not 20 to 25 minutes. I was also disappointed when I went to buy a t shirt. There were only about 20 to 30 shirts available and they were sold out in minutes. The Fifth Dimension were GREAT!! Very entertaining and good sound!!! Maybe they should have been the closing act??!!!!

They still have that great sound that we remember, and played all their great hits. I was also really impressed with The Fifth Dimension-Fantastic. Together they combined for a fabulous night of Rock & Roll!!!

    Tommy James and the Shondels

by Lawdawg273 on 7/17/12Heartland Events Center - Grand Island

The songs sounded every bit as good as the recordings, except for the microphone feedback that was intermittent, but constant throughout the entire concert. I loved the show though. I have waited my whole life to see Tommy and his show was worth the wait! I sang. I rocked. I loved it!!!!

    Speaker Feedback

by etak78 on 7/17/12Heartland Events Center - Grand Island

i was soo looking forward to this event, however, the entire concert was marred with speaker feedback (that screeching sound that makes u want to cover your ears) i kept hoping they would fix the problem, but evidently they couldn't. i enjoy tommy james music and was glad i got to see him live at a local venue just wish the sound quality would have been better. also, was disappointed with the concessions @ heartland event center, no variety, just the same old hotdogs and nachos.

    Teen Music Relived

by nase on 7/16/12Heartland Events Center - Grand Island

What an amazing way to feel the music from our past! Keep up the show with the order of your hits. Play Mony, Mony with less background music while Tommy goes into the crowd. Way to go by having the 5th Dimension as the opening act! Very well worth time and money. Sure wish that the acoustics could be better in a great event center for Grand Island. That would have made a difference for others that mentioned it for the loudness and the static. Other than that, a great evening.

    Better late then never.

by mrmax on 7/16/12Heartland Events Center - Grand Island

Good Show, plane trip delay meant they had to travel by ground, but still put on a good show. They seemed to have some technical difficulties but Tommy James still has that voice! Would recommend it!

    Tommy James and the Shondells

by JPM55 on 7/16/12Heartland Events Center - Grand Island

It was a good, entertaining concert. The only thing that detracted from it was how they tried to make the old songs sound more modern... would have enjoyed it better if they played them like I remembered them...

Loved Tommy James and the Shondells

by Lewsflash on 7/16/12Heartland Events Center - Grand Island

I thoroughly enjoyed the Tommy James and the Shondells show. I remembered every one of the songs and most of the words. So it was easy to sing along and have a great time. He was down on the floor with a meet and greet with the audience and seemed to be enjoying the evening also. So glad so many of these older groups are making a comback and getting out to a whole new generation of fans.

Too much muffled sounds & too much feedback. Not many popular songs. Early songs were desolate one no one knew.

    Tommy James and the Shondells

by Sam44 on 7/16/12Heartland Events Center - Grand Island

Absolutely fantastic. The band came out on the stage and started playing song after song with great energy and didn't waste time, it was great. All the old classic songs. We knew every song they played and they still have the energy and entertainment value they did back when they were young. They are amazing. I would strongly recommend and would go see them again in an instant..... I know Tommy wants to be friendly & appreciative of the fans but don't really like the time he used going out to shake hands and pose for pictures mostly because there are so many idiots in the crowd with no manners that crowd in to maul him or want photos & etc when others have paid to see him sing. I think it is unsafe for the singers too as there are sick people or drunken people with no sense....

    Tommy James rocked

by GoodTimesZzzz on 7/16/12Heartland Events Center - Grand Island

This concert was the best. Tommy James and the Shondells rocked, playing hit after hit. Tommy when out in the crowd and interacted with fans-people loved it! The opening act was the Fifth Dimension, and they sounded perfect, all the notes all the hits. Great Concert!
