TOM ODELL IN CONCERT:

Acclaimed British singer-songwriter Tom Odell isn't much concerned with musical trends. While many of his contemporaries have started dressing up their tunes with elements borrowed from dance music and hip hop, Odell has stuck to his indie pop guns, favoring simple, piano-based arrangements that let his heart-rending voice and confessional lyrics shine. In concert he performs seated at the piano, conjuring up evocative chords and melodies while his band adds gentle guitar, glacial glockenspiel, and haunting vocal oohs and ahhs to the mix. Odell wears his heart on his sleeve, and seeing him perform deeply personal songs like "Real Love" and "Magnetised" in the flesh only heightens their emotional impact. He wowed fans in 2016 with his sophomore album Wrong Crowd, and followed up with powerfully emotional sets on tour that treated ticket buyers to the full range of his awe-inspiring talents.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Chichester, England-born Tom Odell studied classical piano as a child and started writing songs at age 13. After high school he abandoned plans to attend university and instead focused on music, performing at open mic nights around the Liverpool area. He enrolled in the Brighton Institute of Modern Music shortly after and started the band Tom and the Tides, but ultimately decided to go solo. He got a break in the early '10s when British pop sensation Lilly Allen saw one of his London performances and signed him to her label, resulting in his 2012 debut EP Songs from Another Love. He followed up in 2013 with his first album Long Way Down, a No. 1 smash on the UK Albums Chart that produced a string of popular singles including the Top 10 hit "Another Love." A slew of accolades followed, including the BRITs Critics' Choice Award and a nomination for the prestigious BBC Sound of 2013 poll. Odell spent the next few years touring, and in 2016 he released his sophomore album Wrong Crowd, a No. 2 hit on the UK Albums Chart that he supported on the No Bad Days Tour.

    Great

by Seabass on 10/11/23Place Bell - Laval

First time in Place Bell, super nice place. Seafret and Tom Odell were wonderful but Jane’s Party was very hard to enjoy because the loudspeakers were way too loud in comparison to the two other artists

    Amazing night at the Massey!

by PJSees on 10/5/23Massey Hall - Toronto

From the opening by Toronto’s own Jane’s Party, and the top drawer singing and guitar mastery of Seafret, we were treated to a night of top musicianship. Tom’s opening was dramatic and built up over 2 hours to the brilliant climax of Another Love. In between the audience was either completely silent or singing raucously along, encouraged by Tom himself. His band are also excellent musicians and performed like heroes throughout. An amazing night and we’d do it again tomorrow eve if we could!

    Amazing night!

by Moonlike on 10/5/23Massey Hall - Toronto

It was my first time seeing Tom Odell live and I really enjoyed seeing how he is as a person outside of his songs. Believe it or not he is able to share that with the audience through his performance.

    Tom Odell returns to DC

by Chuck Whalen on 4/25/22Lincoln Theatre - Washington

I saw his concert about 8 or 10 years ago...at the small venue between the Lincoln and the 9:30 Club. It was great. "Another Love" video is what brought me to see that show. 100% energy and total commitment to his music. I'm a 74 year old fan, probably the oldest one at the Lincoln, and his current performance was outstanding. He has matured, as most musicians do, and I appreciated the quiet attention the audience gave to his music. He even mentioned that himself. His musicianship is beautiful; his piano playing, his writing, and his vocal dexterity. I loved every moment of the show. Tom Odell, thanks for coming back.

    Great Show!

by DL on 4/25/22Paradise Rock Club presented by Citizens - Boston

First time seeing Tom Odell, and he didn't disappoint. We loved his solo acoustic performance (which was most of the show) with just him on the piano singing. It is EXACTLY what we were hoping he would do. His piano playing and vocals were so pure and clean that you could make out every word. Kudos to his sound crew for the great job they did to get the sound as pristine as it was. He didn't bring his band with him, but he had one of his longtime collaborators who played slide guitar and base on a bunch of the songs. It blended in nicely with the acoustic piano. He has so many great songs that I would have been happy with whatever he played, but the way he mixed the old in with the new was great. He even debuted a new song he hadn't played before live, called Just Another Thing that we don't talk about, which is a GREAT song. Looking forward to hearing that one on an upcoming album. He also did a cover of Lana Del Ray's Video Games, putting his own spin on it and sounding terrific. I think my favorite songs of the night were Lose You Again and Grow Old With Me. He's one of those artists that, even though you like him in the studio, he sounds even better live. I'm a huge fan, and would see him again in a heartbeat!

    could be better

by Angele on 4/23/22Lincoln Theatre - Washington

The venue was ok. The show could have been better, it didn't really feel like a concert. People seemed scared to sing along while he was performing, he did invite us to sing with him on the last song though.

    Could have been better

by Nicole on 4/19/22Paradise Rock Club presented by Citizens - Boston

I’ve been a big Tom Odell fan for years and I absolutely love his voice, and his skills on the piano, so by extension I will always be a fan of a stripped back concert. Nevertheless, this concert was standing, it lasted for barely 1 hour and given that a lot of people in the room only knew “another love” and maybe 1 or 2 other songs, I really think there should have been a band to bring more energy to the stage as I have seen at previous Tom Odell concerts, and kept the stripped back versions for specific songs. I’ve never felt like I needed to look for a chair in previous Tom Odell concerts, but I did this time.
