Todd Rundgren on Tour

Fans never know what to expect from a Todd Rundgren show, which is a testament to his range as a musician. For example, his "The Individualist, A True Star" tour was named so because of its unique format: Along with a set of hits, Rundgren also performed a side of his seminal 1973 LP A Wizard, a True Star. In cities with multiple shows booked, the musician played a different side of the album each night.

No matter where Rundgren's creative muse takes him on a given tour, what stands out is his voice — an instrument that can handle both growling rock and blue-eyed soul — and his charismatic stage presence. Thanks to this versatility, Rundgren has also toured as part of Ringo Starr's All-Starr Band and, as a solo artist, opened for Hall & Oates and teamed up with Joe Jackson for a co-headlining tour. In 2019, he joined forces with the Monkees' Micky Dolenz, Christopher Cross and Badfinger's Joey Molland for the "It Was Fifty Years Ago Today – A Tribute to the Beatles' White Album" tour.

Todd Rundgren in Concert

Todd Rundgren first broke into the music business in the late '60s with the band Nazz, for whom he wrote "Open Your Eyes" and "Hello It's Me." He then released several solo albums, including 1972's Something/Anything? (which featured a re-recording of "Hello It's Me") and then founded the rock band Utopia, a group that drew on prog, power-pop and new wave. In 1983, Rundgren released one of his best-known songs, "Bang the Drum All Day."

In addition to his own work, Rundgren is also a well-respected studio artist who's produced albums for Hall & Oates, XTC, Psychedelic Furs and Meat Loaf. Rundgren has also continued to release solo albums, including 2017's White Knight, which featured guest spots from Robyn, Joe Walsh and Nine Inch Nails' Trent Reznor.

Todd's the real deal - what a treat

    by Suzie R. on 5/3/24

The Akron show was my third show for the ME/WE tour. I had to see it again! The show starts pronto and lasts over 2 hours with no intermission. The set-list includes gems from over fourteen albums, as recent as 2022 'Space Force' yet going back to 1974 'Todd' and everything in between. And a little Utopia thrown in. Some songs have never been performed live before, making the show a real treat for me, as it will for other longtime fans. I've seen Todd over 100 times. There are flaming rocking ‘guitar’ Todd and moments, ones where he is animated and the ultimate entertainer, and times so heartfelt and moving, you could hear a pin drop. Voice was strong and solid, as is the band, highlighted by an extensive light show. For those who may have not dived deep into his extensive catalog, it is an opportunity to hear the songs he picked that are special and genuine. Great all around experience. Upon reading reviews, It NEVER surprises me to see the same negative reviews for EVERY SINGLE TOUR complaining they didn’t hear a song they wanted to hear, even when the show was billed as a full album tour (such as Todd/Healing or AWATS), a Robert Johnson tour (Todd Rundgren’s Johnson). Or there was too much ‘new stuff’ they didn't like when touring a new album tour (Arena, White Knight), so they left after 20 minutes, so how did they know? Or, that he either talked too much, sharing opinions, or didn’t say enough. Although this criticism haunts his career, it could be a SNL skit. I say, read up on what you are buying a ticket for. Have an open mind for new material, or songs you have not heard before. TAKE NOTE: This is not an all the hits all the time show, although you’ll get a slice. If you are looking for a cover band to play “Bang the Drum” I’m sure there are a million other ones out there doing it every Friday at the Dew Drop Bar and Grill. ME/WE is a show you have never and may never see again. Todd's the real deal. Don't miss it.

    45 years later

by Busyhead on 5/3/24Roxian Theatre - Pittsburgh

This was my first trip to Pittsburgh's Roxian. There is not a bad seat in the house. Last time I saw Todd live was 45 years ago. Even though i was less familiar with many of the songs, it was still enjoyable. It might just be my aged ears, but I wish the first few songs hadn't drowned out the vocals quite so much. I love the nuances of Todd's vocals, and of course his lyrics. It was a little bittersweet, seeing him 45 years older and still performing. The lighting was fun and psychedelic.

Todd and the band still got it

    by Willis1966 on 5/2/24Goodyear Theater - Akron

Todd was on top of his game along with Kasim and the rest of the band and their backing vocals. Great variety of songs probably covering half a century of music. Hats off to you guys for another memorable show. Hopefully see y’all again this fall back here in Cleveland..

    Disappointed in song Choices

by Mickey on 5/2/24Roxian Theatre - Pittsburgh

My son and I went there and were disappointed in his choice of songs Todd is a talented musician for sure but he has to understand that most people come there to hear him play his pop hits that they have heard for decades on the radio it seemed like he was just pushing his new album and although you don't mind hearing a few tracks to have that dominate the evening and him not play anything that you're familiar with till the encore is very disappointing

    Todd spans his career

by FranM on 5/2/24Roxian Theatre - Pittsburgh

Old, newer, jazzy, R&B, rap, reggae, acapella and guitar rock were part of this tight bands set. I’m sure some will say “just play the hits” but it’s great to hear he artist and the band play great music. And we got a few hits too. Great small venue. I’d recommend seeing a show here. Only downside - It took 3-4 songs for the sound crew to get the vocals right.

    Worst concert ever

by Eztymez on 5/1/24Sound Board at MotorCity Casino Hotel - Detroit

DIDN’T sing the songs from our era that we came to hear. My husband recognized one, me none. The people behind us said this concert was so different from the last one they saw him in a couple of years ago, that they were disappointed as well. We left early, two hours of our life wasted. Too bad because he had so many GREAT songs from the 70’s, he didn’t have to play them all but just about everyone in that crowd was around our age of mid to late 60’s.

    Todd Goes Deep

by King of Winter on 4/30/24Goodyear Theater - Akron

Todd put together a set list of songs that over the years have been favorites of the true fans, not the folks who think he stopped making records after Something/Anything (1972) Nearly Human, Liars, Arena contain some of Todd's best work, and he put together a night of some of his finest work. Songs like "Hawking", Weakness, God Said & Beloved Infidel, along with classics like "The Last Ride"from 1974. Todd's music makes you think, laugh, cry, dance and sing along. The range of emotions you'll experience know no bounds. Todd is 75 years old and it seems he's not about to waste time trying to appease people who owns one or two of his albums. Instead, he's playing what's important in his vast catalog. Songs that are still relevant in todays world. He's giving us his best, not his most popular. You wanna hear Bang The Drum? Go to a Packers game and you'll hear it everytime they score a touchdown.
