Todd Rundgren on Tour
Fans never know what to expect from a Todd Rundgren show, which is a testament to his range as a musician. For example, his "The Individualist, A True Star" tour was named so because of its unique format: Along with a set of hits, Rundgren also performed a side of his seminal 1973 LP A Wizard, a True Star. In cities with multiple shows booked, the musician played a different side of the album each night.
No matter where Rundgren's creative muse takes him on a given tour, what stands out is his voice — an instrument that can handle both growling rock and blue-eyed soul — and his charismatic stage presence. Thanks to this versatility, Rundgren has also toured as part of Ringo Starr's All-Starr Band and, as a solo artist, opened for Hall & Oates and teamed up with Joe Jackson for a co-headlining tour. In 2019, he joined forces with the Monkees' Micky Dolenz, Christopher Cross and Badfinger's Joey Molland for the "It Was Fifty Years Ago Today – A Tribute to the Beatles' White Album" tour.
Todd Rundgren in Concert
Todd Rundgren first broke into the music business in the late '60s with the band Nazz, for whom he wrote "Open Your Eyes" and "Hello It's Me." He then released several solo albums, including 1972's Something/Anything? (which featured a re-recording of "Hello It's Me") and then founded the rock band Utopia, a group that drew on prog, power-pop and new wave. In 1983, Rundgren released one of his best-known songs, "Bang the Drum All Day."
In addition to his own work, Rundgren is also a well-respected studio artist who's produced albums for Hall & Oates, XTC, Psychedelic Furs and Meat Loaf. Rundgren has also continued to release solo albums, including 2017's White Knight, which featured guest spots from Robyn, Joe Walsh and Nine Inch Nails' Trent Reznor.
Extremely talented artist and an equally talented band. What a show
I have been a fan for many years but have never seen Todd live. The show, quality & sound wise was great. I am very disappointed that he played only 2 of his "hits", and that was a medley so wasn't even the full songs. Saying this, I was not there for a greatest hits show, but please, play the songs that made your career successful. Todd has mad talent but he could have sprinkled in some hits. I am seeing older artists, they seem resentful that people want to hear the old hits. An example, Jackson Browne actually told a crowd that he did make good music after the 80's !!! Well that may be so but being that a lot of the audience had gray hair, humor us and play the songs that made us love you, along with newer songs. I have seen him many times but will never see him again unless he is solo, ( which he did 10?? years back. It was amazing. Another artist, Bruce Hornsby, did the same thing. His attitude was oozing with ??? because people were yelling out his popular music. He also said that he has made great music recently & that we should listen to it...... My response is the same as above. I like him but will never go see him again & that is sad...
Todd did not play any of his older hits He was not interactive with the audience. People were leaving throughout the show. HORRIBLE SHOW.
I went to see Todd Rundgren to hear him perform his classic tunes from the '70s and '80s. Other than a brief oncore of Hello, It's Me, and Can't We Still Be Friends, and one other song I can't remember, all in a medley, the whole show was his new and recent material. My wife enjoyed the show very much because she was unfamiliar with Rundgren. But I wanted to hear the old Rundgren with the songs that made him popular, not the new pretty much unknown Rundgren.
He has problems with his voice and understandable. He missed it by not singing his hit songs in full length, a medley was not what the audience wanted.
Todd Rundgren has more energy than most men his age. The current Me/We tour features mostly music from post Utopia solo work, which if you are a fan, is extremely enjoyable. The people who just want to hear "Hello it's me", "I saw the light", and "Can we still be friends"will be disappointed but it is not the 1970's and Todd has been creating music for over 50 years.
Very disappointed to have purchased tickets to see Todd Rundgren and hear all is old favorites. Only to get there and there were none, he played only new stuff I guess none of which appealed to us. Left before the show ended it was just boring. The playlist should be shared to help people decide ahead of time if they want to spend money to be sure they will be hearing the music they spent on rather than be super disappointed.
Todd is a genius!!! His work has been part of my life since 1967. Me/We tour did not disappoint, he went deep songs that are hardly heard live. Todd's voice was full and rich. Setlist was surprisingly diverse, his catalog is full This tour covered TR's work of many years. Band was tight and I danced all the night "Down with the Ship"was a treat an unknown song to most but the fans were wild, Todd threw a few oldies that are often requested Todd doesn't do requests !!! maybe the crowd should be satisfied Great Concert You should do yourself a favor and make a point to see Todd Rundgren you won't be sorry You will be enlightened
Outstanding set list, excellent venue, band was tight as usual. Thanks Todd for a great tour.
In my 50 year Todd experience, each tour is completely different, you never know what to expect! I feel that’s how entertainment should be to keep it fresh & alive. In my opinion, this only adds to his true genius & this tour did not disappoint♥️
Very good show. Not for those who are not intimately familiar with all of Todd's work, as he dug rather deeply into lesser known material for the performance. Great musicians, as usual, who worked well as a team, although Jesse Gress was missed........inevitably. Excellent.
Todd came out, he played. He sounded great and looked good. He didn’t talk to the audience except to announce the band near the end of the show. Everyone was waiting the whole concert for certain songs. He played a couple of his hits briefly in an Encore and didn’t play others.
I thoroughly enjoyed this show. I was impressed with the performances and production. Todd’s energy and connection to the audience is very special. No matter the song, you can see he is dedicated to what the song is saying and the music is conveying. The band looked like they were enjoying themselves, too, which is always fun. The set list includes a lot of deep tracks which longer term fans will be very happy about.
Todd Rundgren is an enigmatic, iconoclast. He is a remarkable musician and not one to rest on his laurels of the long lost past. This show is called “Me/We” for a reason that is his alone but in the context of last nights performance at the Capitol Theater in Portchester, NY, Im preferring to think of it as Todds show designed for himself and his longtime fans, of which I am one. 1970- present. This was a tight, dynamic, entirely professional performance. The sound, lighting and pacing was wonderful imho. The songs chosen were indeed deep cuts, culled mostly from albums that casual listeners might not have much knowledge of. Even the songs included from more commercially successful records were lesser known but no less musically significant, at least not to me. Todd himself was in good form. The whole show was performed in one continuous block. No breaks, no intermission, no banter with the audience. This is unusual for Todd Rundgren as most longtime fans know but given the range of songs most of which were written for his younger voice, it is not surprising that he might have been preserving his voice and his focus for singing. From me, he gets props for this. In his mid 70s he delivered a show, along with his excellent band, that would have been difficult for a man half his age to deliver. I myself am approaching the age of 70 and I realized something during the encore and the lovely final song. Although I love his frothy pop oriented singles from our youth, I REALLY don’t need to hear them in concert. Those, I can hear anytime I want and I have heard them in concert many, many times before. What I need from Todd Rundgren these days is what he gave us last night, a well produced reminder of the fullness of his thinking and the heart felt philosophy that drew me to him in the beginning. I got that and I came home very, very happy. ❤️
I love Todd. It was almost painful to hear how his voice had aged. Todd only performed two of his popular hits during the 2 hour + show. Many attendees walked out. I almost felt sorry for him. I wish Todd the very best in retirement.
A,FANTASTIC SHOW THE BAND WAS GRRAT AND TOOD WAS GREAT.
Didn't realize Todd had so many songs that we had never heard before. We were expecting to hear some of his classics but only did a couple.
I enjoyed the concert. Mostly laid back. Good band with good vocals. I like his message through music. He is a talented yet somewhat quirky guy. It was mostly a deep cuts concert. I would have preferred a couple less unknowns for a couple popular tunes. Most likely would see him in the future.
A long-time, casual Todd fan. The number of songs played was amazing. His songwriting genius is just incredible. It is also mind-blowing that he and the band can play that many unique pieces without charts. His songs are usually in the 3 - 3 1/2 minute length and there is rarely an improvisation. All that said, I truly wish that he would play his older material. His Nazz, Utopia, and solo hits are among some of my very favorite songs. He did a little mashup of a couple hits in the encore, but that was it. I get it. Playing songs from the 70's for the millionth time is tough but your fans love those songs. Tom Petty balanced playing new material with playing his hits EXACTLY as they were recorded, and the crowd would eat it up. I really wished I could have heard "Real Man".
I’ve been to many Todd concerts over the past 50 years and I have to say the quality of his performances along with the band has not lost anything, in fact this particular show at the Bergen PAC had incredibly good sound and Todd’s voice was in great shape which isn’t easy to pull off at 70 + years old. I really, really enjoyed this show and highly recommend it to all!
