Todd Rundgren on Tour

Fans never know what to expect from a Todd Rundgren show, which is a testament to his range as a musician. For example, his "The Individualist, A True Star" tour was named so because of its unique format: Along with a set of hits, Rundgren also performed a side of his seminal 1973 LP A Wizard, a True Star. In cities with multiple shows booked, the musician played a different side of the album each night.

No matter where Rundgren's creative muse takes him on a given tour, what stands out is his voice — an instrument that can handle both growling rock and blue-eyed soul — and his charismatic stage presence. Thanks to this versatility, Rundgren has also toured as part of Ringo Starr's All-Starr Band and, as a solo artist, opened for Hall & Oates and teamed up with Joe Jackson for a co-headlining tour. In 2019, he joined forces with the Monkees' Micky Dolenz, Christopher Cross and Badfinger's Joey Molland for the "It Was Fifty Years Ago Today – A Tribute to the Beatles' White Album" tour.

Todd Rundgren in Concert

Todd Rundgren first broke into the music business in the late '60s with the band Nazz, for whom he wrote "Open Your Eyes" and "Hello It's Me." He then released several solo albums, including 1972's Something/Anything? (which featured a re-recording of "Hello It's Me") and then founded the rock band Utopia, a group that drew on prog, power-pop and new wave. In 1983, Rundgren released one of his best-known songs, "Bang the Drum All Day."

In addition to his own work, Rundgren is also a well-respected studio artist who's produced albums for Hall & Oates, XTC, Psychedelic Furs and Meat Loaf. Rundgren has also continued to release solo albums, including 2017's White Knight, which featured guest spots from Robyn, Joe Walsh and Nine Inch Nails' Trent Reznor.

Todd's "Todd & Healing" concert Back to the 70's

by Geo1954 on 10/16/10Akron Civic Theatre - Akron

Akron was the closest concert, on the tour, for us to attend since Pgh., Pa wasn't included. Tickets were reasonable ($50 each for balcony). Seats were small in the older theater. View was good. Audio was better than at the Palace Theater in Greensburg, PA. Location was easy to find. Parking was OK-nearby. Todd has a loyal following of fans and we love every concert. There were a few glitches, in the concert, but they added to the live performance. Hey, Todd is human!

    Unforgettable night with Todd !!

by LuPea on 10/12/10Keswick Theatre - Glenside

I have been a fan of Todd's since the 70's. He is still amazing, and with such a strong, beautiful voice. He sounds great. The songs sounded just as good as they do on the albums, only better , because they were live! The crowd was really into the music. Todd has such loyal fans. Great show. Can't wait to see Todd again!

    Todd Hit the Mark

by mushroomdude on 9/20/10The Roberts Orpheum Theater - St Louis

The opening act the Fixx was pretty decent. I'd heard several of the songs from years past and those were done quite well. They did seem to drag on a bit and could have done a few more instrumental pieces, since that is where the band's real talents lie. Sound levels could have been dialed back a bit, as vocals were lost in the music. Todd, was usual Todd: a taste of whimsical delight and true to putting on a dandy performance, complete with the theatricals that he often brings to the staqe. Much of the crowd was quite enthusuastic, although too many got up to leave prematurely, which in such a small venue, was really apparent to all. I felt he didn't interact with the crowd as much as he had in past shows, although the acts he performed onstage were much more elaborate than what I had seen in previous tours thru St. Louis and may have precluded much interaction. Plus, there was a lot of material to cover. Perhaps though, it was disappointment because of the early departures from the audience. Vocals and instrumentation were right on. It was a real treat to see that even though he didn't resemble in physical appearance, the Todd of 10-20 years ago, his voice was amazing. Those expecting commonly aired songs were disappointed, but the concert feature two of his lesser played albums and it was good getting exposed to these. And yes, he did seem to cover those albums in their entirety ,just as advertised. Overall, you can beat the price to see a great performer and a great concert in a very nice setting. Can't wait for a future concert from Todd.

Todd still rules the live stage

by DrumrPete on 9/16/10The Roberts Orpheum Theater - St Louis

The Fixx were good as the opening act. Singer, keyboardist, and bassist were very cool. The Rundgren show was excellent, Todd, as always, goes all out. The stage was set up much like a theatrical performance. All musicians were "modular", rolling onto the stage to play, then off when they were not needed. Never have I seen anything like it. Todd was in top singing and playing form, I noticed a few mistakes that made the performance even that much more endearing. This was an incredible undertaking, performing two whole albums live.

really was hoping to hear more popular oldies. it was an interesting show but more of a "show' than concert. a lot of theatrics starting with clothing. i have been wanting to see Todd in conference for about 30 years now....i guess i just had different expectations.

todd hasn't lost his game one bit!

by wizardkp on 9/16/10Morristown Arts Center - Morristown

fantastic show... todd's voice is just as good as ever. he covered the Wizard album and Healing and did Sons of 1984 for an encore. i felt like i was back in Central Park in the late 70's. SO MUCH FUN! dancing to Izzat Love? was the best! my 15 yr. old son came for his second todd concert and is a huge "new" fan, it was only my like 27th concert, i skipped 20 years to have kids and calm down so... it's fun to be back and to attend such a remarkable show ... we're all so impressed with how well Todd has kept his voice in shape, himself in shape and Kasim too. a good thing only gets better with time , like wine. go todd! can't wait till the next show in the New York area.

    Todd is a true healer

by Toothinhand on 9/16/10Keswick Theatre - Glenside

I've been a Todd fan since seeing the Deface the Music Tour. That concert changed my life. This one saved it. I've been to about ten Todd and Utopia concerts, and have never been let down. I always leave feeling hopeful for myself and mankind. This time they hit it out of the park, across the street, down the Ave etc. etc...... It just kept going. Knowing full well that they were only doing the two albums, I didn't expect to feel it build to end the way it did. It just shows Todd's genius. I for the life of me couldn't figure out why he picked those two albums together. I didn't see the connection. Todd is the connection. The connecting themes of Love, Hope, Faith and Compassion have always been there. But to really understand them takes time, patience and a good teacher. Todd is a REALLY GOOD TEACHER! By the time you read this review, the tour will be over. BUY THE DVD!!! SEE TODD WHEN YOU CAN!!!

    TR's Todd and Healing review

by Mistymountainhop on 9/16/10Keswick Theatre - Glenside

For me it was the reunion of 5 friends who loved Todd from the 70s and early 80s. It was an absolutely perfect evening. Some of what Rundgren performed from the Todd double lp was a tad boring but even so Todd was in top form. His vocals never sounded better. Standouts from the first set were The Last Ride, Number One Lowest Common Denominator, Everybody's Going to Heaven/King Kong Reggae, Izzat Love, Heavy Metal Kids and the gorgeous Don't You Ever Learn to complete the set. Then came Healing and it was awesome from beginning to end. This is my favorite album by Todd and every song sounded great. I especially loved the Healing parts 1, 2 and 3. Todd then played Time Heals and then the encore was Sons of 1984 with the audience participation in the chorus. It was an amazing night and show that will stay with me for life. I know all 5 of us felt the same way. Todd still has it. The man is a top entertainer and above all a genius.

Todd reaches back , takes care of his fans

    by Hutch20 on 9/16/10Keswick Theatre - Glenside

Having just attended Todd’s Big Johnson show in Annapolis in the spring I was surprised to see he was returning to the Delaware Valley with another show just a few months later, this one he would be playing two of his albums in their entirety. The Todd album has always been one of my favorites, right up their next to Something/Anything but not quite up there with AWATS. The second album he performed was Healing, which according to reports, was Rundgren’s way of dealing with a home invasion robbery that left him shaken to say the least. The two albums were about as polar opposites as you could imagine with Todd being extremely experimental and nearly Prog Rock, compared to the quieter introspective feel of Healing. So that said, the second set (after a brief intermission) was much more sedate. My date (wife) who is not as nearly the Rundgren fan that I am, noted that on our drive home. Looking back I would suggest that Rundgren switch the two and perform Healing first and then hit the audience with the much rowdier and louder Todd to send them home. As far as performance goes, the band, as usual was tight. Rundgren has been playing with the same backing band for ages (Kasim S, Prarrie Prince, Jesse, and more recently Greg Hawkes from the Cars). Being one of the first shows on the tour, there were the occasional glitches which being as close to the stage as we were, you could see Rundgren’s dissatisfaction. The show was also being recorded for what I guess will be either a DVD or a live stream at a later date and some of the audience felt they had to scream out to Todd between songs so they would be on the DVD. Rundgren, for what reason, had very little if any interplay with the audience like he normally does. Just the songs ma’am….Only one encore (Sons of 1984) which was not really an encore since the song closes the Todd album, but by then the band had played nearly 2 hours and no one was too pissed after the lights came on. All in all having seen Todd nearly 50 times, I gave the show an 8/10. And what ever happened to the Big Johnson CD?

Invade and conquer Clowes Hall-Butler University!

by inhouserecordingstudios on 9/13/10Clowes Memorial Hall - Indianapolis

Sweetness and rock and roll. Electronic wizardry and pure musical genius. A light show to rival Pink Floyd's. A backing band totally up to the task of making Todd's visions come alive. Costumes adorned every member enhancing the exportation back to two of the best albums ever recorded. Todd Rundgren's "Todd" and "Healing". Ripping one guitar solo after another and then gracefully (yes I said gracefully) sliding over onto an upright piano. Or should I say it slid to him. Moving stage parts. LED and Laser lights galore. Dazzling musical performances. But the most consistent and treasured part of the show was Todd's voice! No bantering this show, too much ground to cover. With only one exception, a simple "you are very welcome" to an adoring fan during the show, who shouted a heartfelt "thank you Todd" Thank you Todd for gracing us with such a magnificent show and performance. and caring enough to want to do it! 61 years old and you'd never know it! This show is one of a kind-if you miss it, you are missing history. For fans-our history. Todd history. What an ambitious project for all involved to take on! All I can say is "BRAVO, EVERYONE-BRAVO! .

by anaid on 9/13/10Clowes Memorial Hall - Indianapolis

I have seen Todd Rundgren preform many times through out the years. I must say Todd and the band were in top form. Todds voice was in good shape. Todd and the band were having a good time preforming. By the end of "Healing" the auditorium was in rivial mode. We were having a "Todd Revial"!! The show was amazing !!! worth every penny I spent on the tickets. I would definitely go see the show again.

    Todd Rundgren-Still Great!!!!!

by Chipmonk54 on 9/13/10The Roberts Orpheum Theater - St Louis

At this show, Todd did 2 of his older Albums (Todd+Healing) in their entirety. Todd was in fine voice, and the band was exceptional. Todd's live shows are always top-notch. He's like a fine wine that keeps getting better with age. I would highly recommend any of his live shows to anyone, young or old. This guy is an Icon.................................

    Todd exceeded expectations once again!

by wts48 on 9/13/10Clowes Memorial Hall - Indianapolis

Although it's been many years since I've seen Todd live, it was like time stood still watching him perform again. His ability to hit notes like he did 30 years ago is amazing and impressive!!! He replicated his albums with incredible precision. His energy was amazing as well, especially in heavy costumes. The venue was great! Sound was crystal clear. I would recommend others to this facility.
