aged like the finest wine
by lawmsh on 8/8/22Timothy B Schmit is one of the finest high harmony singers of the last 60 years. Why did Richie Furay take a young kid who had hardly ever shaved and make him a member of a band (Poco) that he knew was about to pioneer the creation of a new music genre: country rock? Why did Don Henley & Glenn Frey ask him to be the 3rd voice as the Eagles sought to maintain their status as one of the tightest harmony bands of the rock era? Was there anybody else on the planet with the talent and sensitivity necessary to just step into Randy Meisner‘s shoes without anybody hardly noticing? It’s been a distinct and memorable pleasure to see Timothy B Schmit at BB Kings and City Winery over the past few years. If one is looking to get drunk, party and sing-along (make a lot of noise without really listening to the band) to a bunch of tired old songs, then I would recommend the bar band down the street. It is a disservice (to put it mildly) to one of the finest vocalists in the world. It also shows a complete lack of respect to the people who have come a long way at considerable expense for one reason. They know there are very few opportunities to hear vocals and harmonies like those Tim has perfected over a lifetime. Instead of making a lot of noise (because they can’t hear Life in the Fast Lane, if people would just stop and listen, maybe they would hear why everybody else is not wasting this rare opportunity to hear what Furay, Henley & Frey heard from the start that has it now, with time, been perfected into some of the most beautiful vocals, harmonies and musicianship the world is ever known.
