About

Thom Yorke In Concert

Thom Yorke has never just been Radiohead's frontman. The English maestro of melancholy, gifted with an indelible, otherworldly falsetto, has always had much more up his sleeve. Since his career launched in the early 1990s, he's survived grunge, helped reinvent alternative rock, and brought experimental electronic and IDM music to the mainstream. He has been an innovator and influencer for decades, with and without his bandmates. And he's one of the most electric live artists to come out of the '90s alternative scene—his dancing is as unforgettable as his singing.

Yorke first stepped away from Radiohead to cover Roxy Music songs for the soundtrack to the 1998 film ‘Velvet Goldmine,' and he lent his vocals to tracks with artists like Unkle, Sparklehorse, PJ Harvey, and Björk. By the turn of the century, he started diving more into electronic music, which was nothing entirely new for Yorke—he had actually dabbled with techno as a student at the University of Exeter. But this time around, he looked to IDM innovators like Aphex Twin and Autechre for inspiration, which showed plenty on Radiohead's acclaimed albums ‘Kid A' and ‘Amnesiac.' These influences would continue to sit with Yorke, who finally put out his own collection of dark, poignant electronic music with his 2006 debut solo album, ‘The Eraser.' The album peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 chart and topped several other charts, including the Billboard Top Rock Albums and Tastemaker Albums, with help from stark, skittery singles "Analyse" and "Black Swan." It was also nominated for the 2007 Grammy Award for Best Alternative Music Album.

A few years later, Yorke took a song from that very album—"Atoms for Peace"—as inspiration for the name of his new band, which included longtime Radiohead producer Nigel Godrich, Red Hot Chili Peppers' bassist Flea, drummer Joey Waronker, and percussionist Mauro Refosco. The group first took to the stage in Los Angeles in 2009 and performed select shows, including an appearance at Coachella in 2010, before releasing ‘Amok' in 2013.

Another few years and another Radiohead album down, Yorke would finally release his second solo electronic album in 2014, ‘Tomorrow's Modern Boxes,' this time via BitTorrent, where it was downloaded over a million times in under a week. Soon after, he began dipping into soundtrack work and composed his first feature film soundtrack for the 2018 horror film ‘Suspiria.' In between all this work, Yorke has been known to do surprise DJ sets, but there's still nothing quite like seeing him perform his own songs.

    Epic show!

by achapin on 10/6/09Orpheum Theatre - Los Angeles

One of the best shows I've ever seen. Hearing "The Eraser" performed from start to finish was awesome! The Orpheum, however, should put a couple loudspeakers up at the balcony level to give those seats a better sound.

    The Band with No Name

by Dubstyle on 10/6/09Orpheum Theatre - Los Angeles

It started at 9:07 P.M. The house lights dimmed and the crowd leapt up out of their seats. The people at the Orpheum Theater on October 4th were not here for just a concert; they were here for a different experience all together. It’s not every day Thom Yorke takes a break from his Radiohead fronting duties to do a few shows. Yorke’s solo record, The Eraser, has been out since 2006 and some three years later he has finally decided to do a few one-offs to support his debut record. Yorke decided to assemble a supergroup in order do his solo record justice and boy did it pay off. With Flea on bass, Nigel Goodrich on programming/guitar duties, Joey Waronker on drums and Mauro Refosco manning the percussion, the band with no name was set. As they took the stage, Yorke and company wasted no time and jumped into the album’s title track. The newly formed unit played as if they had been doing this for years. Yorke keyed the piano in an almost schizophrenic manner. Despite his erratic movements, Yorke played the song with frightening precision. As the lights flickered on stage, the crowd remained in their seats. It’s strange to see a high-energy concert from the comfort of a theater chair. The band continued by playing Yorke’s solo record in the order it appeared on the album. The Eraser was for the most part a moody, electronic record, but somehow the live instrumentation sounded spot on to that of the LP. Flea did not sound like a bass player. It was as if Yorke had programmed him before the set. His ability to sound mechanical and so technically proficient speaks echoes on his talent. Flea was the backbone and as the set progressed it became apparent that he was the only man fit for the job. The tracks “Black Swan”, “Atoms for Peace” and “Harrowdown Hill” were the crowd favorites and also showcased Flea’s musicianship. It’s rare when a group can perform tracks from an album and actually make them sound better live. The band with no name did just that. Track after track the electronic nuances from the album recordings dissipated and the live elements made the songs better than the originals. Some 80 odd minutes after the set began, the music stopped. After the six encores the crowd was left to gather themselves and reflect on the evening of music they just witnessed. As people headed for the exits they compared notes on what celebrities they saw and discussed how “ridiculous” the performance was. It’s comforting to know the Edward Nortons, Tobey Maguires and Anne Hathaways of the world can appreciate good music like us common folk. Yorke’s show was no doubt the hottest ticket in town this past Sunday. For those lucky enough to actually make it inside it will be a night of music that won’t soon be forgotten and unfortunately not likely to be repeated.

Thom Yorke and Friends were magical

by lattenjoe on 10/5/09Orpheum Theatre - Los Angeles

This was hands down the best concert I've seen all year and I've seen quite a few great ones. They were apologizing on line that it'd be a short show since they didn't have much material yet, but it clocked in at almost a 90 minute set... not bad at all as far as set length. Imagine the upbeat danceable parts of a radiohead performance... then add in a funky Flea driven bass line. I think both Thom and Flea were channeling Joe Cocker a bit for the inspiring epileptic, music/passion-induced dance routine. Definitely fun and entertaining... Oh, and I ran into Sandra Oh in the balcony bar line... she now gets extra points in my book for musical taste!
