    Them Crooked Vultures

    by DB1976 on 11/20/09Fox Theater - Oakland - Oakland

To begin with, I went into this show not having heard Them Crooked Vultures yet. I did that on purpose so I could get the full experience of the band live, without creating expectations in my mind based on their album. That said, these guys rocked the roof off of the Fox Theater in Oakland, CA. From the minute they got on stage it was full speed ahead without slowing down once. The band didn't do an encore, which is actually fine with me; sometimes I find encores to be really annoying. Dave Grohl (Nirvana/Foo Fighters) was amazing on drums (as usual), Josh Homme (Queens of the Stone Age) was fantastic on vocals and lead guitar, John Paul Jones (Led Zeppelin) was a total bad ass on bass and keyboards, and Alain Johannes (Eagles of Death Metal/Spinnerette) on rhythm guitar and keyboards was pretty kick ass. The opening band was a group called Mini Mansions, and I have to say they were pretty good. I wouldn't buy their album, but I wouldn't change stations if they came on the radio. Overall the show was amazing and I highly recommend seeing Them Crooked Vultures live. It is an experience not to be missed.

    Them Crooked Vultures

    by fydo1974 on 11/20/09Fox Theater - Oakland - Oakland

It's not every day you get to see a supergroup only 2 days after their debut album is released. And what a super group! I've seen Dave Grohl a few times with Foo Fighters and he's an amazing singer and guitarist, but it was great to see him back behind the drum kit again. The guy is like Animal from The Muppet Show, with his arms and hair flying everywhere! Dave and John Paul Jones were an incredibly tight rhythm section. Jones played bass on about half the songs and was clearly having a blast. He played some amazingly fast parts during the jams. I was least familiar with Josh Homme as I haven't listened to QotSA that much. His singing reminded me of David Bowie and Jack Bruce on certain songs and he cranked out some great RAWK guitar riffs although he didn't solo that much. This band is really more about writing songs with challenging rhythms than flashy guitar solos. Fourth member Alain Johannes played guitar, bass and some keyboards which freed John Paul Jones up to play keyboards, mandolin, and slide guitar on the songs where he wasn't playing bass. The only dull point of the show was a slow song (I think it was "Interlude with Ludes") which was largely driven by a sample. Josh put down his guitar and sang this one like a lounge singer while Jonesy held a keytar but didn't actually seem to be playing it. But the rest of the show rocked!

Them Crooked Vultures - DAMN STRAIGHT!

    by Jester33 on 11/20/09Fox Theater - Oakland - Oakland

The show from start to finish was dynamite. Buying a ticket to this show will make you feel like you're paying them to kick your butt. Grohl was amazingly mercilous and made me wonder if John Paul Jones felt he could be the second-coming of the late great Bonham. Jones was a natural on stage increasing and decreasing the bands percussive engine speed like an out of control locomotive heading over a mountain. Of course the conductor (Grohl) showed nooooo signs of applying the brakes.

    Hard Rock is Back

    by Zack0279 on 11/20/09Fox Theater - Oakland - Oakland

The Vultures have landed. They came with a thunderous display of Rock and Roll showmanship. Dave Grohl absolutely destroyed the drums. John Paul Jones of Led Zeppelin fame showed he is very much still relevant on today's musical landscape. And, Josh Homme brought his haunting vocals with some very solid guitar playing. Starting off with "Nobody Loves Me, Neither Do I," they ripped through there album.

    TCV rocked the Fox!

by Shocko on 11/20/09Fox Theater - Oakland - Oakland

Great show...Dave Grohl is in his element behind the drums! I have seen Foofighters 3 times and Dave is great as a front man and is a talented guitar player but he was born to play drums! John Paul Jones kicked ass on the bass (of course). the 2 guys from Queens of the Stoneage were adiquate but did not show any real guitar leads for any length of time so I was a bit bummed by that but they did a good job. If this band had a true lead guitarist in the caliber of Steve Morse or Stevie Vai, they would truly be a super group! all in all I had a great time, the Fox is a great venue.
