About

Co-founder of the Yardbirds, Jim McCarty, continues to lead this ground-breaking British Invasion Rock band that provides the crucial link between the blues, British R&B, psychedelic rock, and heavy metal, while pioneering the use of innovations like fuzztone, feedback and distortion. This drummer, singer, songwriter, and producer is said to be one of the driving forces responsible for the band's haunting sound.

Since the birth of the band from 1963 to 1968, to its 1992 induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, the Yardbirds have been revered for the legendary guitarists who have contributed to the band's history including Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, and Jimmy Page all ranked in Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time (#35, #5, and #3 respectively).

Originally a blues-based band noted for their signature "rave-up" instrumental jams covering blues classics like Howlin Wolf's "Smokestack Lighting" and Bo Diddley's "I'm a Man," the Yardbirds later broadened their range into pop, pioneered psychadelic rock, early hard rock / heavy metal, and contributed to many electric guitar innovations marking those musical genres. The band had a string of hits in the mid 60s including "For Your Love", "Heart Full of Soul", "Shapes of Things", and "Over Under Sideways Down".

Celebrating his 30th year as a Yardbird, lead singer John Idan has lent his distinct vocals to the sound of the band since their reformation, showcased on the classic 2003 Birdland album with guest appearances from Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, Slash, and Brian May. Rounding out the current line-up of top musicians is lead guitarist Godfrey Townsend (John Entwistle, Alan Parsons, Todd Rundgren, Ann Wilson of Heart, Christopher Cross, Dave Mason and Musical Director of the Turtles' Happy Together Tour) bassist Kenny Aaronson (Bob Dylan, Billy Idol, Rick Derringer, Brian Setzer, Dave Edmonds and Joan Jett), percussionist, harmonica and background vocals Myke Scavone (the Doughboys, Ram Jam), The current band has recently completed work on an upcoming live album, Mind the Gap, soon to be released.

"The band's hallmark of top-notch musicianship remains. There are no passengers in this band." - Goldmine Magazine

  • Yardbirds & friends show Westbury 5/6/18

by hippychick4ever on 5/11/18NYCB Theatre at Westbury - WestburyRating: 5 out of 5

Much more than I expected from each act. Blues Magoos were just ok. Canned Heat brought me back to Woodstock. I thought they sounded fantastic! Mark Stein brilliant on the Hammond & in my opinion the best! So talented....Saw him with The Fudge hundreds of times back in the day. Good group of musicians now. The Yardbirds were absolutely awesome!!!! Every song was so great and some played were a great surprise. Everyone around me was dancing & singing and just in awe of how great they all played as a group. Bass player & lead guitar were amazing. Loved the show and left feeling great and my youth relived!! On my top 10 list for sure.

  • Better than Expected

by Pepap on 5/9/18NYCB Theatre at Westbury - WestburyRating: 5 out of 5

If the Yardbirds come to a city near you I highly recommend checking them out . They played all the classic Yardbird songs and a few new ones too. They were loud and tight .They were true to form in the guitar style of Jeff Beck and Page and may i say even better . Johnny A , John Idan on the guitar, and Kenny Aranson on bass as well as Myke Scavone harmonica and of course Jim Mcarty on the drums were all amazing . Shape of things , Im a man , Better man than I ,Heart full of soul , For your Love , Train kept a rolling and other songs got the crowd going . A+ show

  • Yardbirds at Westbury Music Fair

by Slowhand54 on 5/9/18NYCB Theatre at Westbury - WestburyRating: 1 out of 5

What a RIP-OFF!!! \The only member of the original Yardbirds was the drummer. The guitar player is from NJ and the bass player from Brooklyn. Canned heat only had two member and hate to even comment of the Blues Magoos. I've heard better garage bands. I think its un-fair to bill a show are the Yardbirds. The music of the Yardbirds maybe but NOT the Yardbirds! I will be more careful next time I buy tix for one of these older bands

  • No Idea from the Description About Other Artists

by Rittad on 5/9/18NYCB Theatre at Westbury - WestburyRating: 4 out of 5

Didn’t realize from the description that so many other artists I was not interested in were going to preform and I didn’t enjoy them. Then I needed to leave before they came on.

  • Disappointing

by Port11050 on 5/9/18NYCB Theatre at Westbury - WestburyRating: 2 out of 5

The Blue Magoos were horrible. Canned Heat was great. Mark Stein from Vanilla Fudge was way too loud and seemed too full of himself. The Yardbirds were okay but not up to expectations. Also, took too long to rearrange the stage before each group came out. Overall, a disappointing evening from someone who loves going to see groups from the 60's and 70's.

  • Fantastic Rock Medley

by frodo1925 on 5/9/18NYCB Theatre at Westbury - WestburyRating: 5 out of 5

When I got tickets for the Yardbirds I didn't realize that I'd experience a fantastic evening of rock before they even came on including Blues Magoo, Canned Heat and Mark Stein. I usually get bored during warm-ups for the main act but not this time, each group was brilliant in its own right. Mark Stein did "You Keep Me Hangin On" so well people had to get up and move. Also did great Alice Cooper stuff like "School's Out for Summer" raw and real. Then the new and improved Yardbirds came out and I was totally blown away. Johnny A on guitar was brilliant as always. Played "You're a Better Man" so well. Jim McCarty on drums still going strong after all these years. Westbury is a great venue with no bad seats and draws a friendly down home crowd. Absolutely fantastic night of rock n roll. I'm still high from it.

  • Almost too much entertainment!

by HungryBob on 5/9/18NYCB Theatre at Westbury - WestburyRating: 5 out of 5

Took Ed to see the Yardbirds with Canned Heat. He's a huge Mole fan. The bands were exceptional. Great venue. He said this was probably the best Xmas gift he's ever received. Gary didn't and won't get his gift. Can't forget how great the Blues Magoos were opening this tremendous bill.

by NotRealNameForMySecurity on 5/7/18Turning Stone Resort Casino Showroom - VeronaRating: 5 out of 5

I wasn't expecting much with only one original member plus the ticket price was so low. But, I was very pleasantly surprised. These guys were great!

  • 60s legends updated to today

by Mikefumetti on 5/7/18Turning Stone Resort Casino Showroom - VeronaRating: 5 out of 5

One of the best shows you will see is the Yardbirds in concert. Yes they do not have Jimmy page, Jeff Beck, or Eric Clapton, but they have amazing players who will re-create the sound that made them famous in the 1960s with seminal songs like over under sideways down, shapes of things, and for your love

  • Yardbirds were amazing!

by Rlevy29 on 7/10/17Resorts Atlantic City - Atlantic CityRating: 5 out of 5

The Yardbirds showed that getting older does not mean your talent goes away. We enjoyed all of the songs the ones we know and the ones we don't. We would definitely see the Yardbirds again!

part of the British Invasion in the 60's and worth what I overpaid for the seats, which I almost sold! Was not sure if we would be in town on that date. Glad we made it! Our 40th anniversary! Only thing missing was... the Kinks! "Rock On, Yardbirds" !

  • Old School Rules

The Yardbirds were fantastic! Really set the mood with all wired instruments and classic drum kit...played the same instruments all night...even replacing a broken E string during the bass solo,,amazing!
