About

Four years after forming in a London school, The xx unleashed their 2009 eponymous debut via Young Turks. The 11-track collection not only earned accolades from critics across the globe, but it also scored the U.K.’s coveted Mercury Prize and landed the dream-pop band in the limelight stateside. Singles from their indie-label foray graced American television programs like “Person of Interest” and “90210,” as well as a Karl Lagerfeld runway show and NBC’s coverage of the 2010 Winter Olympic Games.

Along with their own headlining theater tours and concerts alongside Friendly Fires, Hundred Waters and The Big Pink, the musical trio has performed at several festivals, including the Matt Groening-curated All Tomorrow’s Parties in 2010, Coachella, Sasquatch Festival and Lollapalooza, among others.

For their most recent effort, 2012’s “Coexist,” the indie pop outfit expanded their ticket-buying base with post-dubstep EDM influences. Though mellow, these touches can be heard in the album’s first two singles, “Angels” and “Chained.”

Love XX but not the Wiltern

by jbunge on 6/8/10The Wiltern - Los Angeles

The xx was great! But the sound was muffled and the bass was weak. Not impressed with the Wiltern. I saw them at Coachella and they blew my mind with there drums and melodies...

by VENANCIO on 6/7/10The Wiltern - Los Angeles

FROM START TO FINISH THE SHOW WAS GREAT.THE ONLY DISAPPOINTING PART OF THE SHOW IS WHEN IT WAS OVER.THEY WERE ALL BUSINESS WHEN THEY PERFORMED.NONE OF THIS ALL TALK AND NO ACTION.PLAYED ALL THE SONGS ON THE ALBUM WITH TWO NEW SONGS.LIKE THE ONE WITH THE DRUMS BEING PLAYED.LIKED THE LITTLE CHANGE THEY ADDED TO THE END OF BASIC SPACE.

    The XX

by JonnyS on 6/7/10The Wiltern - Los Angeles

Great high energy short show. Band played hit album. They're very very good. Only complaint is not much, if any, variation from record. Be nice if they loosened up a bit. They did play one new song which was quite good.

    XX = AMAZING

by MaChNe on 6/7/10The Wiltern - Los Angeles

The back and forth between both vocalists had a lot of great chemistry. The fact that they're percussionist uses a drum machine worked spectacularly because it enable them to perfectly duplicate anything they did on the album. They're great song writers with a less is more mentality so their wasn't anything "in the way" that kept them from just putting on a great performance. This show also demonstrated how much of an effect great lighting can have on a show. The show started with a thin white curtain covering the stage and they had multiple spotlights on each band member that reflected their shadows on the screen from a different angle. going dim at one angle and lighting up from another, dancing their shadows across the screen. One of the greatest (and most) moments was actually in their most "quiet" mellow songs from their album(fantasy). It's mostly acapella. The percussionist had a disco ball sparkling behind him so it looked like he had 50 beams of light just emanating from him (beautiful). At the second half of the song there's just HEAVY bass and single string guitar playing with an echo effect. When the guitar would play the floor level stage lights would come up almost blinding white. The bass was so heavy that when the lights were at their brightest with the bass at full blast at the same time, it literally looked like the stage was vibrating. I don't know how it did that but it was amazing. Maybe the bass was vibrating the air or the smoke in the theatre which bent the light...? idk but it blew me away.

by TavoL on 6/7/10The Wiltern - Los Angeles

I think what I experienced was something so new to Los Angeles that it's still yet to fully appreciate what it was..... These guys (& gal) showed that anything is possible with a push. It was a muggy night full of hypnotic sounds............ Summer in L.A. is here!!!!!!! XX gets a AAA from me~! Phantomgram was pretty good too.

by MrUnequivocal on 6/7/10The Wiltern - Los Angeles

This was a great show, the lights put you further into the mood for what was a great immersive concert running through the hilights on the album... the XX provided a great bassy, guitar laden smooth sensual vocal lightshow that was perfect for a Sunday evening after a Laker loss!

    lacked professionalism

by eatingmachine on 6/7/10The Wiltern - Los Angeles

In all fairness to the band, we had to contend with a group of young teens singly loudly(and poorly) along with the lyrics, a few people spilling drinks on us(why do people bring drinks down to the floor?), and a constant stream of people taking video/pictures with their cellphones or gigantic recording devices- I know posting these lame, poor quality pictures on facebook or your blog/vlog is the only thing that proves you're alive, but please keep it to a minimum. It's really distracting; I want to focus on the band, not your poor cheap video monitors that are hovering in my line of sight. Anyway, it took excessively long for XX to take the stage after their two opening acts. Around thirty minutes; maybe forty. When we saw the National at the same venue two weeks earlier, they performed mere minutes after their opening act- but maybe that's just a trait of a more mature, professional band. XX also played the entire opening song behind a white sheet, their shadows cast against it for dramatic effect. Entirely too dramatic, especially after you've left the people that paid to see you waiting for forty minutes. The ultimate insult was leaving the stage after the encore with a recording of yourself playing. It was beyond confusing. The lights were still down, but a recording of the band was playing on an empty stage... maybe the band would've come out for a second encore had the crowd responded better; but I think we were a little confused by the audio track of XX playing to an empty stage. Anyway, after the song finished, the lights went up and everyone awkwardly shuffled home.

    this band is awesome

by MrAlex on 6/7/10The Wiltern - Los Angeles

this show was fantastic. even though its not loud rock music the crowd was really energetic. these 3 brit kids really have class. oliver (he's the bass player) thanked the audience repeatedly and said that its a dream come true to be here and thank you all for making it possible). i haven't seen class like that from a rock band ever. its even more awesome when you realize how young they are and what punks most young musicians who make it are. they sounded fantastic live too. the first opener was a dj called no such thing. he started ok but got really boring. phantogram was the 2nd opening band and they were pretty solid. not amazing, but if you like big beat electronica you might dig them. all and all it was really fantastic to see the xx live and for them to be so humble. really made me feel thanked for being there. the feeling was mutual. i hope these kids go really far.

    The XX - was Exxxcellent!!

by AliBali on 6/7/10The Wiltern - Los Angeles

The show was held at The Wiltern, grand venue for any show to perform there. Opening bands were "No Such Thing" & "Phantogram" They both rocked and set up a really good anticipation for The XX. Sounds sytems in the venue was decent and the seating in the Mezz section is decent. Not too far and it's a good bird eye's view of everything going on stage.

XX ... not ready to headline

by Anonymous on 6/7/10The Wiltern - Los Angeles

Not enough uumph for a live act in a larger venue. XX sound is very cool minimalist guitar and bass with sexy male/female duet vocals, they do it well, but they may also be trapped in that sound. Do they have the musicianship to expand and innovate it? Second album will reveal. As live act, not enough energy to command a big crowd as appeared at sold-out Wiltern event.
