Band was great; venue took away from the experience
by D. W. on 4/5/23The Underground - CharlotteI've seen probably a dozen shows at the Underground, and I don't remember being so bothered by the limitations of the venue. The Winery Dogs are a legit super-group, and I was really looking forward to watching them play in a small/medium room. But all I could see were the heads of the musicians, and only if I moved around to avoid taller people who would block the view of the entire stage. I saw nothing. I'm 5'10" and the place seemed to be filled with dudes over 6'2". Disappointing. But the sound was good. Loud but not earplug loud. Ritchie got some amazing tones out of his rig, and Billy's bass tones can act as both bass and another guitar, keeping it interesting, which is the challenge of a power trio. I kept waiting for Mike to stretch out on drums, but he was more restrained than I was expecting. His short breaks showed off his talents, and I could have listened to a lot more of them. In a different venue, the overall performance would easily have been 5-stars, but I had to take away one for not being able to see the band.
