THE WHO IN CONCERT:

Rock ‘n’ roll gods The Who have always stood out from the pack with their wild onstage antics. Known for smashing guitars, swinging microphones around, jumping off amplifiers, and blowing up drum kits, the band has always represented the pinnacle of rebellious rock genius. Their larger-than-life performances are evenly matched by their huge sound, and classics like “My Generation”, “Pinball Wizard”, and “Won’t Get Fooled Again” are still played with thunderous force. For The Who Hits 50! Tour, the group is bringing their trademark monolithic grandeur and kinetic energy to stages around the world. Ticket buyers should be ready for an awe-inspiring stage show that lives up to the mythical status these legends so rightly deserve.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Formed in 1964 around Pete Townshend, Roger Daltrey, John Entwistle, and (later that year) Keith Moon, The Who have always been on the vanguard of music, art, and culture. With their first single “I Can’t Explain”, the band became a staple of English Mod culture. They also developed a penchant for onstage theatrics such as smashing guitars and destroying drum kits during their sets. The group took their high-concept performances to the next level in 1969 with the release of Tommy, known as the first “rock opera”. Their next album, 1971’s Who’s Next, further established the band with another batch of classic songs like “Won’t Get Fooled Again”, “Behind Blue Eyes”, and “Baba O’Reilly”. The continued to cement their status as rock gods throughout the decade, touring and releasing a steady string of hits. Throughout the '80s, '90s, and '00s The Who continued to deliver riveting live performances to stunned audiences around the world. Despite the passing of several members over the years, Daltrey and Townshend have soldiered on, delivering the critically acclaimed album The Endless Wire in 2006, their first album in 24 years.

Pete Townsend and Roger let us down

by bellboy7 on 11/3/12BB&T Center (Formerly BankAtlantic Center) - Sunrise

The show was beyond my expectations w the lads playing tight, Quadrophenia was played magnificently and Rogers voice was stronger than its been for years. Pete's guitar work is still beyond compare. The rest of the group were just brilliant. BUT.... no encore, Pete leaving the stage ? Come on lads, that's just not right. I was highly anticipating this show having never seen the Quadro set before live, I left on a down note, feeling pretty blue. Wished they would have played more.

    The Who excellent

by Art5454 on 11/3/12BB&T Center (Formerly BankAtlantic Center) - Sunrise

The Who have still got it. I saw Tommy at the same venue (Bank Atlantic Center) last year and it was remarkable. We were bummed not to have Pete along for the Tommy tour, but his brother was excellent. It is always interesting to see the opening night of a tour. Rogers voice got stronger as the night went on. A true professional. Pete's brother was fantastic as he was before. Pete was every bit as magnificent as he always is. It was clear that Pete was not happy with some of the sets and in particular with his guitare tech on a few occasions. He said after one set "Opening night nerves you know"., but I don't think the rest of us knew what he was referring to in particular. I believe Pete is a perfectionist and wanted the opening to be without a hitch. Prsonally, I go to shows with real performers doing it dirty and live. If I wanted to see perfect canned productions I would go to see show where the performers lipsynced and used autotune. I loved the show and it is awesome to see The Who out there doing their thing. Live and direct. Loved it. Does anyone know why Pete did not return during the encore?

    The Who were unbelievable

by whofuss on 11/3/12BB&T Center (Formerly BankAtlantic Center) - Sunrise

This was one of the best concerts I ever saw. Too bad Pete Townsend didn't feel the same and walked off before the concert was over.

    Who's Great

by 32tango on 11/3/12BB&T Center (Formerly BankAtlantic Center) - Sunrise

I went to see The Who perform "Quadrophenia" last night at the BB&T Center, in Sunrise, FL. What an incredible performance! Roger Daltrey's voice still has the same power and strength that he had 4 decades ago. Pete Townsend may not slide across the stage on his knees like he used to, but he still "windmills" his right arm as in days of old, and is a better guitarist than ever. Zack Starkey (Ringo Starr's son) was on the drums (and he plays drums better than Ringo ever did), and did Keith Moon proud. Pino Palladino was on the Bass, and showed he is the accomplished session bassist he is known to be. Pete Townsend had his brother playing another guitar and doing vocals (His voice sounds just like Pete's) They had 3 keyboardists and a full set of horns (2 saxes and a trumpet), They masterfully performed all of Quadrophenia, then as an encore did "Pinball Wizard", "Who are You", "You Better, You Better, You Bet", and finished with "Baba O'Reilly". Two hours of incredible. I first saw The Who in 1968 in the Village at the Cheetah, cherished them at Woodstock, saw them 5 times in one week in May, 1970 at the Fillmore, in 1974 at the Garden, and probably have seen them 12 or 13 times total. This was the best yet.

If Pete Townsend had finished the show

by JR1971CT on 11/3/12BB&T Center (Formerly BankAtlantic Center) - Sunrise

Got to say, The Who sounded ok for their age! Roger sounded great, but Townsend was a grumpy old man. Perfect example of this was when he walked off stage during the song You Better....without the other band members even knowing it. After the song finished everyone on stage was looking for him and no one knew where he was or what happened. The rest of the band then played Baba O'Reily with Simon Townsend picking up for his slacker brother. The next day it came out in the news that Townsend thought the monitors were too loud and had a hissy fit! Long story short, if you want my hard earned money and you can't finish a show don't tour

by ChipD1120 on 11/3/12BB&T Center (Formerly BankAtlantic Center) - Sunrise

Great to see Pete & Roger together. I'm glad these two didn't live by the words "Hope I die before I get Old". Voices aren't what they use to be but the music was great and Zach Starkey was superb. Multi-media of Who history and post WWII London was excellent. Nice look backs at Keith and John.

    Quadrophenia Only

by AVbrat on 11/3/12BB&T Center (Formerly BankAtlantic Center) - Sunrise

If you listened to Quadrophenia over and over again many moons ago, then this is the concert for you. If you expect to hear your favorite Who songs, you'll be sorely disappointed. Clearly Pete Townsend wants to play only what he wants and even with the crowd constantly going to get drinks and no one really engaging in the concert, they continued to play the pre-programmed set. Roger Daltry played 5 songs that any one knew with out Pete (who was probably in the limo by then) and didn't come back for any kind of encore. As an AV Brat, I was entralled by the technology that was displayed on stage. The circular projection with video mapping and over lay was bleeding edge. The historical montage on the displays was an impressive and time consuming effort. It was an artistic and professional production, except it didn't add much to the average customer's experience of the show. The Who has lost sight of what the fans are coming to see. As performers when you're loosing the crowd, you need to be able to adjust to bring them back in. I realize as musicians, it's a nightmare to perform the same 20 songs over and over but the old as new again didn't work here even with the stunning and at times even assaulting stage production. Thanks to Roger, some of the fans stuck around and 'crowd sang along' the few familiar tunes at the end. Even that left most fans feeling they deserved better and were disappointed when their efforts elicited no encore. I must take this opportunity to apologize to those sitting near me for singing "Rain on Me" at the top of my lungs out of frustration and a desire to have some fun that night.

    First Set Carried the Show

by 60andRocking on 11/3/12BB&T Center (Formerly BankAtlantic Center) - Sunrise

After an incredible recreation of Quadrophenia highlighted by Pete's spot on vocals and masterful guitar, The Who returned for what should have been an hour of Who highlights. Four songs in and Pete lost his composure over what appeared to be sound problems with his guitar and walked off stage leaving Roger to finish the short opening night set. Roger, obviously frustrated with Pete, mumbled a few words and left the stage. It was a spectacular Quadrophenia, but with tickets in the hundreds, we deserved better than 3/4 of a show.

Very nostalgic! Great to see Roger and Pete!

by gator1jim on 11/3/12BB&T Center (Formerly BankAtlantic Center) - Sunrise

Great performace of Quadrophenia with exceptional tributes to John and Keith. I understand Roger was responsible for this audio/vidio production. I thought the total band sounded even better than the last time they played here in Sunrise. Just very unfortunate that Pete's issues ended the show early,

Who Rocked Till Townshend Quit on The Concert

by Canesmonkeyl on 11/3/12BB&T Center (Formerly BankAtlantic Center) - Sunrise

Quadrophenia was great ... nice visuals and great to hear the songs ... the latter part of the show was definitely tarnished by Pete T. walking off the stage during encores so that we heard Baba ORiley without him on guitar and then they closed the show down and skipped playing Wont Get Fooled Again to finish as they always do .... definitely was a bummer ending and Pete let down his fans in a major way .... boooooooo Pete .... your old hang it up if you arent gonna work for the dollars people shell out for the shows

    WHAT HAPPENED TO PETE?

by PARTY4EVER on 11/3/12BB&T Center (Formerly BankAtlantic Center) - Sunrise

FABULOUS show until Pete went AWOL , they played Baba OReilly without him and it sounded empty. I'm sure they were going to play Won't Get Fooled so I feel robbed. But Quadrophenia was awesome especially intertwing John Entwhistle and Keith Moon into it and the old flashback video.

The Who - Sunrise, FL - GREAT SHOW

by rr4evr on 11/3/12BB&T / Bank Atlantic Center - Sunrise

Saw the opening night show of The Who Quadrophenia Tour 11/1/12 in Sunrise, FL. In short, it exceeded my expectations. The sound mix was great in our seats at the opposite end of the floor from the stage. Three circle videos above the stage with the center larger than the other two. A giant video running behind the band the width of the stage and about 30 ft tall. And two video screens on either side of the stage. 3 keyboard players and two horn players along with the band (which included Simon Townsend on guitar). Lots of old videos of growing up in England...WW II, crowded living, industrial, music, housing on up through events including attacks of 9/11. Roger / Pete's voices sounded strong and they both looked energetic. Pete played several Stratocasters most of the night. Recorded videos of John and Keith playing woven in to a couple of songs was a real nice touch. Great lighting also....lots of purple, blue, yellow along with strobe lights (white dish looking objects in vertical columns on both sides of the stage). Very short intermission after Quadrophenia....don't wander far/long or you'll miss start of 5 song second half. SPOILER - second half included Pinball Wizard, Behind Blue Eyes, Baba O'Riley, You Better You Bet and Who Are You. Amazing!! One down aspect is that Pete walked off the stage in the middle of YBYB and did not return...apparently frustrated with the sound he was hearing. Roger paced the stage looking for him before a quick conversation with Simon before starting the final song (Who Are You). Awesome show with a bit of a sour ending but well worth it. If you've never seen them and are now able to do so, you should treat yourself. If you have tickets, you'll love the show.

    The Who is Always Transcendant!

by teacher2 on 10/16/12Pontiac Silverdome, Palace of /auburn Hills MI - Pontiac

If you are a rock music fan and have never experienced The Who live, you need to catch them at least once while Roger and Pete are still intact. Naturally, we miss Keith Moon and the Ox. However the remaining duo combined with highly talented support of Zac Starkey on drums and other supporters never fail to put on an unforgettable show. This tour, they are focusing on the Quadrophenia album...probably The Who's finest. If you're unfamiliar with their catalogue, do yourself a favor and listen to Quadrophenia and Who's Next prior to the show. This band has influenced myriad acts over the past 4 decades and is sometimes written off as an "oldies" act by the uninformed...So untrue! Can't wait for Joe Louis Arena in Detroit this November!

    The Who-40 years ago

by Bubbadub on 9/20/12St. Louis Colisium - St. Louis

Quadrophenia had just been released and we piled in the car to drive 5 hours to see them in St. Louis Colisium. They blasted through the entire album without any back-up keyboards or synth, and it still sounded incredible, and then kicked into the (now) classics. They even had a quadrophonic PA. I think it was a three hour show. Moon had just collapsed at the Cow Palace in SF a few days before, but was unstoppable. They all were. So now I'm getting ready to see them play Q4 all the way through again in January. Moon and the Ox are gone but not forgotten. Based on the 7 other times I've seen the Who since that night, I don't expect anything but incredible effort and commitment and a rock tour de force. And I still love the album as much as ever. Will probably take a copy to my grave.
