About

Abel Tesfaye, who performs under the moniker The Weeknd, emerged shrouded in mystery in 2012, when he uploaded three tracks to YouTube that picked up near-immediate buzz -- despite the fact that nothing was known about the artist who posted them.

The tracks eventually got the attention of fellow Toronto artist Drake, who linked to the songs via his blog. Before the year was out, the songs were getting great write-ups on the music-hipster bible Pitchfork and in The New York Times.

The Weeknd followed up the next year with three mixtapes -- House of Balloons, Thursday, and Echos of Silence-- that served to ramp up his profile further. In the midst of the critical kudos, he made his first concert performances, including collaborations with Drake. The three mixtapes eventually became the first Weeknd album, 2011's Trilogy.

The Weeknd's sound has been described as hipster R&B (or PBR&B to some), and his tracks have sampled a huge range of artists from indie-rockers Beach House to R&B megastar Rihanna. His slow grooves and falsetto croon create a beautiful and sometimes creepy backdrop for what are often sexually-charged lyrics.

On tour, Tesfaye re-creates his recorded music with some live backing musicians' help and usually can be counted on to bring an eye-popping light show. Fans consistently give Tesfaye kudos for the quality and depth of his live vocals.

The Weeknd seems a natural onstage, even when the stages he's playing are huge. Hard to believe that his 2013 album, Kiss Land, was just his second.

Though his star continues to rise, he's remained an enigmatic figure who avoids magazine and TV interviews. Fans basically have three ways to get to know him better: listen to his music, read his Twitter feed, pick up some tickets and see him in concert.

The Weeknd on Tour - After Hours World Tour

    Not good live

by Zisis on 3/25/12Métropolis - Montreal

If you're looking for a sound that is similar to his albums, don't bother with seeing him live. I don't want to use the word terrible, but I can't think of a better word. It was highly dissapointing. Walked out about 45 minutes into the show.

    The Weeknd tore up Montreal

by Mainez on 3/25/12Métropolis - Montreal

Alright so given a person who doesn't have a ton of experience performing live this was an amazing show. Right from the beginning when he played High For This you knew his voice wasn't aided from the studio, he was the real deal. Definitely will be seeing him again!

    Not what I expected

    by Yass1 on 3/25/12Métropolis - Montreal

The dj played his music for 2h it was just too long. 3h waiting outside + 3h waiting inside - 1h30 of show... And he was just signing one song after another that bad for me

You'll wanna be high for this

by ladybawlz on 3/25/12Métropolis - Montreal

Aside from waiting for 3 hours for The Weeknd to make an appearance, and then only hearing his flawless voice for an hour, the show was phenomenal. Many songs from House of Balloons were featured, as well as some classics from Thursday, a few new ones from Echoes of Silence and Drake's song, 'Crew Love.' Abel himself was eerie and sexual on the stage, gathering screams from the audience. He was accompanied by a 3-piece band and freakishly erotic black and white video clips on a giant screen behind the band. The encore was a chilling acoustic rendition of 'Wicked Games,' leaving the crowd in love with Abel's beautiful falsetto voice. Although I may be biased towards this show because I love The Weeknd, I would definitely recommend seeing him live.
