    Not the experience I expected

by DChads on 4/10/24Elgin and Winter Garden Theatre Centre - Toronto

Hamlet is my favorite Shakespeare and with this show I was slightly disappointed. The dancing was great but the use of the scrolling screen distracted from the show. With the decision to using it, it should have been used more effectively and it wasn’t, thus it shouldn’t have been used at all. If you didn’t know the story of Hamlet you would t know exactly what was happening. With the exception of an excellent opening, madness of Ophelia and her suicide dances the show would have been a total fail for me.

A phenomenal experience of dance and theater!

by Princess Christina on 4/10/24Elgin and Winter Garden Theatre Centre - Toronto

From beginning to end, Hamlet was captivating and spell binding. The stage design, lighting, creative use of props, and music wove together seamlessly with the choreography to leave the audience breathless. All of the talented dancers were magnificent in their own roles, and feel that special mention must given to Carleen Zouboules who shone the brightest, outstanding in her role as Ophelia. I was thrilled to have been able to travel from BC to experience this outstanding, beautiful production of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark at the Elgin Theatre in Toronto. Bravo! 1 1

    Robert Lepage never disappoints!

by Bob on 4/10/24Elgin and Winter Garden Theatre Centre - Toronto

Hamlet without words works very well - all the conflicts and emotions are well articulated by the dancers' performance and the staging. The music, too, is an exceptional accompaniment. A great artistic event that I thoroughly enjoyed. Robert Lepage never disappoints!

    Appreciation of Elgin House Staff

by Lady Di on 4/10/24Elgin and Winter Garden Theatre Centre - Toronto

Shortly before the beginning of the performance I realised that my seating location - mid aisle behind several rather tall individuals - would not allow me to see and enjoy the performance. I requested a change in seating and the House Manager (I think that's who she was) escorted me to a seat which allowed me to thoroughly enjoy the magnificent performance of Hamlet.

    An exciting crossover of disciplines

by Karin on 4/9/24Elgin and Winter Garden Theatre Centre - Toronto

The multi talented cast caught my attention from the start, following a clear storyline, seamlessly executed in a crossover of classical ballet, modern dance, breakdance and theatre. With stunning bit simple decors, exciting scenes take shape in unexpected ways to express a Shakespeare without its wording.

Superb Show of a Timeless Classic

by Alma P on 4/7/24Elgin and Winter Garden Theatre Centre - Toronto

As a secondary English teacher who has been teaching Hamlet once or twice a year for the last 10 years, I was very interested to see this complete reimagining of the play although I tend to be quite the purist when it comes to Shakespeare. I find the plays, particularly this one, to be stories that sell themselves right from scene 1 to the students because of the powerful humanity in the inner conflicts of the characters. Hamlet being the source of inspiration behind The Lion King never requires introduction. However, I was absolutely enthralled by this dance, music and design set based interpretation. The brilliant contemporary dances depicting scenes between friends, lovers and enemies through bodily movement were simply stunning and breathtaking. The amount of lifts, flips, back bending and partner work was unbelievable. There was a real emphasis on the tragedy surrounding Ophelia's death and she was lengthily eulogized, which added an even more somber tone to the portrayal of the play. I was utterly moved by the end of the night and I know that this will go on my list of top 5 plays I have ever seen. Congratulations to the whole team involved in bringing to the stage this superb reimagining without taking away any of the power of the original yet adding so much life and beauty to it. Bravo!
