About

The Specials are a trend-starting ska-revival and 2 Tone band that came together in 1977 in Coventry, England. The band was responsible for starting the early ‘80s ska scene and released a string of timeless songs including “"A Message to You, Rudy" and “Too Much, Too Young.”

Band members Jerry Dammers, Tim Strickland, Silverton Hutchinson, Horace Panter and Lynval Golding started the band with the intention of creating a musical statement against racism. As with the punk era it followed, the ska scene featured politically minded lyrics. This trend was started by The Specials, and their mixture of reggae dancehall music and modern British political lyrics proved very popular.

Tim Strickland was replaced by Terry Hall shortly after the band's formation and within a year they had added Neville Staple and Roddy Radiation to the group. Another line-up change occurred soon after, as drummer Silverton Hutchinson was replaced by John Bradbury just before the band released their debut single, “Gangsters.” Released on Jerry Dammers own label, 2 Tone Records, the song was a hit and they quickly followed with their self-titled debut album in 1979. They returned to the recording studio for the follow-up, titled More Specials, in 1980, which included backing vocals from the likes of Belinda Carlisle and Chrissie Hynde. They hit No. 1 in the charts again with the huge hit “Ghost Town,” a song that still gets used regularly in movies and TV shows today as an iconic, instantly recognizable song from the era.

At the end of 1981, three key members of the band left to form Fun Boy Three, and new talent was brought in. While the band continued to tour all over, front-man Jerry Dammers was finding a new passion away from music, and in 1984 he dissolved the band to pursue his political activism work on a full-time basis. Various members of the band toured in off-shoot bands and there were various short-lived and one-off attempts at reunions in the ‘90s, but finally in the ‘00s fans got to see a more authentic version ofTthe Specials, as they performed in a number of high-profile gigs with many original members. One such performance came in 2007 alongside Lily Allen and Damon Albarn at Glastonbury. In 2013, The Specials released a new live album titled More... Or Less, and they plan to keep on working together.

by cure on 4/17/10CLUB NOKIA - Los Angeles

This is one of the best concerts I've ever been to!!! And I've been to well over a hundred shows. They played more songs than I expected them to play and they were right on. It sounded like the original recordings and the energy was amazing!! All I can say is it was super awesome and who ever was there will definitely agree with me

    The Specials were delicious!

by dmadd on 4/16/10CLUB NOKIA - Los Angeles

Great performance! Well worth the 30 year wait. They played almost everything I knew by them, except they didn't play Sock It To Em, JB. Okay, I wouldn't normally use that kind of word delicious to describe a band, but the lead vocalist Terry Hall said during the performance that he was delicious, so there! BTW, I think I bumped into his son, who was deejaying with the brother of one of the other members in between the acts. The opening act was an imitation cross between ABC and The Thompson Twins called Fits and Tantrums (awful). There was too much time between the warmup and feature act, Club Nokia. It was also too hot inside the venue. I had seen a version of The Specials several years ago at the old Palace with the original guitarists and front me from Fun Boy Three (sans Terry) and it was just so-so. Bringing back Terry makes all the difference. His vocals were spot on. Not any change detected in those dead pan vocals from 30 years ago. Terry, if you say you're delicious, I'll agree then. In fact, I'll say the whole band was delicious last night! Good luck at Coachella and the rest of your tour!

    29 Years Later

by FVLL on 4/16/10CLUB NOKIA - Los Angeles

Valdez and I treked to Pasadena's Perkins Palace to see The Specials (August 14, 1981). It was an amazing show. "Ghost Town" had hit the #1 spot on the UK charts over the summer. They would play one more show (SF) before heading to Jamaica for a little "r & r". They broke up before making it back to the UK. The band would tour as Special AKA and SpecialBeat with former Beat members, But without Terry Hall, the band wasn't the same. Last summer they reformed for some UK gigs. When this show was announced you knew you couldn't miss it with Terry Hall again on vocals. They arrived early and packed Club Nokia. Older yes, but with the original band (Jerry Dammers was not invited for this reunion) it was like they were never away. If all oldies shows only had this much energy. Over an hour and forty minutes they played most of their two studio albums with Hall on vocals. 23 songs later an exhausted crowd headed for home, or maybe Coachella. I'm sure we got a longer show then they'll see on the Empire Polo Field. They say you can't go home, but this is about a close as you can get. Valdez and I were 29 years older this time. Ouch!

The Specials - AMAZING!! Long over due

by Anonymous on 4/16/10CLUB NOKIA - Los Angeles

I had so much fun at this show... I've always been a fan of the Specials so when I knew they would be playing at Coachella this year I thought there must be a pre-show somewhere. As soon as I found out the tickets were going on sale I purchased right away knowing that it would Sell out! The audience was a sea of moving bodies dancing away, everyone singing along. The crowd was nice, no one pushing or pulling just skaking the night away to a unforgettable show.

    Phenomenal

by RockinLA on 4/16/10CLUB NOKIA - Los Angeles

A great time had by all! I was skeptical after the lackluster performance on Jimmy Fallon, but the guys put on a fantastic show. Great energy throughout, band was really tight. Club Nokia is a decent venue. Sound is good. Got the VIP section which is fine because it didn't cost any extra. Did allow for access to the VIP club where we headed after the show. Lynval and Terry were there for a bit and took pictures with people. I thought that was nice.

    Freaking AmaZING!!!

by xdempseyx on 4/16/10CLUB NOKIA - Los Angeles

The Specials was great, the atmoshpere was awesom and the venue BooYAH! They sound just like the radio! I don't think there is a bad seat in the house. The only down side is that for some "larger" then life people the seats are a "tad" on the tight side. However, since you aren't doing that much sitting, it isn't too much of a bother. The whole crowd was rockin' out and you could feel the whole place shaking! They did forget about the A/C for a while and it got a wee bit hot but over all we will be back to see more bands.

    Specials lit it up!

by sewerrat on 4/16/10CLUB NOKIA - Los Angeles

I was totally looking forward to this gig. My favorite venue and of course the SPECIALS. The show was amazing and the Specials brought it big time. They lit the joint up. However, there were a couple downers. I wasn't able to get tickets up in VIP for the first time, show claimed it started at 7 pm and the opener didn't come on till 8:20 and the Specials came on at 9:30 and only played for about 80 minutes which was ok but sure could of listened for another hour. And the worse thing of all was the rudeness within the crowd. I met some cool chillin foreigners but noticed that there were some very obnoxious, rude skullies. I love to jamm and slamm but with class and style. Lot of HOT HEADS who couldn't restrain and enjoy good jammin.

The Specials: Still Stomping after 30 years!

by AndyKofHB on 4/16/10CLUB NOKIA - Los Angeles

Hands down, The Specials are one of the best shows of 2010. Its a shame they are only doing five performances in North America in support of their 30th anniversary. Hopefully they will get a positive enough reception to do a longer tour this summer. With 6 of the original 7 members (Terry, Neville, Lynval, Roddy, Brad, Horace, and keyboardist Nik Torp filling in for Jerry Dammers) the band played 90 minutes that kept most of the audience dancing or bouncing in place at the least. If you closed your eyes you were transported back to 1980 and one of their early performances. The voices and music havent changed and although a little older, they showed all the energy of their teen years. If you have the opportunity to see them live, DO IT! I doubt there will be a 60th Anniversary tour.

    Brings it all back

by ThreeFunBoysPlus on 4/16/10CLUB NOKIA - Los Angeles

In a word, awesome. They played it tight yet loose. This is not one of those going through the motions reunions. Put on a great show. Sounded excellent and first visit to Club Nokia was OK. Rumors of them recording are promising. Coachellaites put on your dancing shoes.

    The Specials at Club Nokia

by Altruistic on 4/16/10CLUB NOKIA - Los Angeles

I've waited 30 years for this concert. The Specials were tight, high energy, fun, and completely relevant. It was truly amazing. I sat directly behind Gwen Stephani and No Doubt and they seemed to also have a blast. What a great evening.

The Specials are just as exciting in their old age

by WickedSkaMan on 4/16/10CLUB NOKIA - Los Angeles

I have seen countless videos of the Specials in their heyday since I was not even born when they had broken up. Although being up in years, they brought the ska and they brought it hard. They brought it so hard. It was rock hard. You can't imagine how hard. It's not in your grasp to imagine such glories. They came out rampaging about the stage to the tune of "Do the Dog" after a nostalgia inducing "Enjoy Yourself". The whole floor was bumping... and not in the overused hip hop sense... this house was a bounce house indeed, worthy of such a moniker in a way only rivaled by a "jumper" at a backyard Mexican graduation party. Yes, the dance craze was at maximum in this room as they continued the barrage flying through "Gangsters", "Rat Race", "Monkey Man", "Concrete Jungle, and "Friday Night, Saturday Morning". A welcome break came as they crooned chill jams including "Hey Little Rich Girl", "Do Nothing", and a tantalizingly wonderful two parter composed of "Stereotypes" and "Man at C&A". Somewhere in this chaos they managed to also squeeze in "A Message to You Rudy", "It's Up to You", "Doesn't Make it Alright", "(Dawning of a) New Era", and "Blank Expression". It was a gigantic night. The evening certainly did not end at such valleys. They picked it up with a boot stomping "Little Bitch" followed by a one-two punch of "Nite Klub" and "Too Much, Too Young". The exhaustion was at dizzying highs at this point... but certainly not for the band on the stage. They closed it out with a typical but always welcome Skatalites number, "You're Wondering Now". They returned for a two part encore consisting of "Ghost Town" and the reprise of "Enjoy Yourself". There was no sad note that this night had ended. It had to lest we die of heat exhaustion... but the fact remains in our hearts and minds... the Specials still bring it hard to a rigidness dreamed of by imitators and naysayers everywhere.
