THE SOIL & THE SUN IN CONCERT:
Michigan-based orchestral rock septet The Soil & The Sun creates sprawling, ambitious compositions that approach spiritual heights while remaining firmly rooted in first-rate musicianship. Songwriter Alex McGrath described the band's 2014 debut album Meridian as an exploration of "life and death, mystery, love, God...and the fate of mankind", and the band delivers on that promise in concert with dynamic performances that traverse the full range of emotional experience. Whether the entire band is immersed in the soaring "Are You" or Ashley, Jacki, and Joanna are delivering their intimate trio version of "I Know It (I Feel It, Too)", The Soil & The Sun always impress on tour with their on-stage chemistry, virtuosic playing, and gorgeous harmonies.
BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:
The Soil & The Sun formed in Grand Rapids, MI, in the late '00s as the bedroom recording project of Alex and Ashley McGrath. By the time the band released its 2011 debut album Wake Up Child, the lineup had expanded to seven talented musicians who described their sound as "experiential spiritual orchestral rock". They followed up in 2012 with sophomore album What Wonder Is this Universe, a top seller on Bandcamp that led to extensive touring and a mention on NPR's list of "Bands to Discover" at SXSW 2013. The band's performances at that festival and other showcases across the country introduced audiences to their uplifting sound and feel-good live sets, earning them legions of new fans. They continued to build on their popularity in 2014 with their third album Meridian, a critically acclaimed slice of kaleidoscopic folk pop that featured intricately arranged accordion, oboe, violin, and vocal harmonies. In 2015 The Soil & The Sun hit the road for a US tour with likeminded bands Indian Lakes and Lemolo.
