About

The Shins are one of the most iconic American Indie bands of the 2000's, known for their classic brand of college rock. Their most recent album, Port of Morrow, was released in 2012, and the first single, titled "Simple Song," was featured in the 2013 season finale of the hit TV show How I Met Your Mother. The Shins treat ticket holders to concerts that brim with alternative and folk rock craftsmanship. In classic indie-rock style, The Shins’ stage sets are minimal, and the focus in is on the clever, introverted lyrics and dream-pop arrangements.

Formed in 1996 by singer-songwriter James Mercer, the band's deft lyrics and jangly pop sound are reminiscent of early R.E.M. The Shins' 2001 album Oh, Inverted World became one of the definitive indie albums of the early 2000s, and the single, “New Slang,” which played a prominent role in the film Garden State, helped the band achieve mainstream success. In a list compiled by Pitchfork of the best songs from 2000-2009, “New Slang” came in at No. 62. Their sophomore release, Chutes Too Narrow was named by Rolling Stone as one of the best albums of 2003. Following up was their third album in 2008, Wincing the Night Away, which was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Alternative Music Album. Throughout the band's four albums and nonstop tours, The Shins have explored new genres and different song structures. Multi-layered lyrics and high-production levels have been consistent features of the band and its concerts over the years, making The Shins a critically respected indie band throughout the entire music industry.

    The Shins was awsome

    by sash1925 on 7/12/09Terminal 5 - New York

The Shins concert was one of the best concerts I've ever attended. The crowd and the band were very outgoing . I loved how there were parts of the performance that were very upbeat and energetic and how other parts just felt soothing and intimate.Surprisingly I really enjoyed the songs they played off their new album. This concert really made me love The Shins music even more than I already did.

    A fun time

by jackiejackiejackie on 7/12/09Terminal 5 - New York

Pros: - Their music - Several crowd pleaser songs on setlist - Fun venue - Reasonably-priced tickets - Guest violinist from Ra Ra Riot (made songs even better) Cons: - Not enough energy from them - Not enough crowd interaction - Didn't state titles of new songs they played - Missed some good songs on their setlist - Some songs lost their campfire quality by being played in a venue

    Shins exceeded my expectations!

by jellybelly on 7/12/09The Electric Factory - Philadelphia

I have been a fan of the Shins for a few years now, and love their records, but wasn't sure what to expect in a live show. After enjoying every second of it, I'd say this is in my top 5 concerts of the last 5 years. The band sounded great, they were full of energy, and hearing the songs live brought a different life to them. It didn't hurt that I had one of the best views in the place (upstairs, right up from the stage at the railing). The opening act, Delta Spirit, was an excellent choice and is one of the first openers in a long time that I wasn't counting the minutes until they were done. They were a great warm up for the Shins and musically a great complement to them. If you love the Shins, or are even just a casual listener, take the opportunity to see them live if you can. It was worth every penny and renewed by respect for them as songwriters and performers!

    The Shins were amazing.

by Marissa on 7/12/09Terminal 5 - New York

We were taking in promptly. Even though we had standing room tickets, we were extremely close to the stage. The acoustics were great. I would go back to terminal 5 in a hearbeat. The band that played with The Shins, Delta Spirit was great. I had never heard of them before and have become of of their fans.

    The Shins: Hipster Mania!

    by Pops19 on 7/12/09Terminal 5 - New York

The music was good I enjoyed hearing the classic Shins songs, but i felt myself being constantly distracted by the amount of teenage hipsters jumping up and down. I would only recommend the show if you think you could handle that type of scene. It seemed to be much more of a younger crowd than I anticipated.

    Awesome

by Mikia on 7/12/09Terminal 5 - New York

Pure awesomeness. What else can I say? James Mercer is such a great lyricist. The Shins' music speaks for themselves. I had a great time and was only a few feet away from the stage- which definitely heightened the event being so close. There's a lot of energy and the music is so great you can't help but enjoy yourself.

    The Shinss!

by JulesD on 7/12/09Terminal 5 - New York

I saw The Shins in NY in May and it was an incredible show. They played all the favorites (New Slang, Caring is Creepy, Sea Legs, etc.) and did amazing covers such as Dry the Rain by The Beta Band. I would definitely recommend going to one of their shows if you get the chance :)

by Siobhan on 7/12/09Terminal 5 - New York

I've been a fan of the shins for a few years now and I must say that i was BLOWN AWAY at their concert. They sounded as good as, if not better than, they do on the CD. It was a concert that i can honestly say i will never forget.

by class on 7/12/09Terminal 5 - New York

Venue's fault really. Terminal 5 has poor sight lines. And the new songs sucked. Sorry. Really disappointing.
