I bought this ticket as a "bucket list" thing, wanting to see Stephen Stills in a concert setting before I die. He's one of my favorite artists, but somehow I'd never seen him play live. So imagine a band in which he's not even the best guitarist! I came away happy that Stills is still alive and kicking, but even more amazed at the skills of bandmate Kenny Wayne Shepherd. The Rides move easily between rock and blues numbers, and Shepherd has an incredible knack for knowing just what to play whether he's soloing or happily serving as the sideman. Together with keyboard great Barry Goldberg, former Double Trouble drummer Chris Layton, and Bassist Kevin McCormick, the Rides rolled through several songs from both of their excellent studio records, Shepherd's own "Blue on Black," and Stills' "Love the One You're With" with ease. An encore featuring a blistering version of Neil Young's "Rockin' in the Free World" was the icing on the cake at the Mother Church (the Ryman).
