PSYCHEDELIC FURS IN CONCERT:

Immortalized by John Hughes' use of their song "Pretty In Pink" for his 1986 film of the same name, the Psychedelic Furs stand as one of the most commercially successful bands to originate from Britain's fertile late '70s punk scene. From the moody post-punk of "Sister Europe" to the soaring new wave of "Heaven," the band covers all their classic material at their nostalgic live shows, perfectly recalling the cinematic grandeur of the decade's pop music. On the road in 2013, the band treated fans to vintage guitar tones and frontman Richard Butler's iconic voice, building excitement for their 2014 tour dates.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Formed amid the UK's burgeoning punk scene in the late '70s, the Psychedelic Furs released their self-titled 1980 debut LP to chart success throughout Europe. In 1981, sophomore album Talk Talk Talk introduced them to American audiences, making its way onto the Billboard 200 with the now-legendary Brat Pack anthem "Pretty in Pink." With the release of third album Forever Now in 1982, the band made their first appearance on the Billboard Hot 100 with single "Love My Way," an enduring cult classic that showcased their  unique ability to achieve mainstream success without compromising their art rock ethos. With John Hughes' use of their track "Pretty in Pink" as the basis for his epochal 1986 film of the same name, the band achieved the height of their international success, paving the way for their continued touring nearly 30 years later.

FANS WHO BOUGHT TICKETS SAY:

"They are spot on. This is not a reunion tour or a bunch of old guys getting together - the band is tight and vocals are brilliant."

"They sound better than ever. Great show, lots of fun, great set list."

"The band was tight and Richard B was on top of his game! Love his vocals and moves - he's still got it!"

    Pleasant Surprise With Expected Greatness

by VegasJoe on 10/17/23Pearl Concert Theater at Palms Casino Resort - Las Vegas

Coming in to the show, we knew of Squeeze, the band. I thought I knew the ‘popular’ songs. But, Squeeze was seemingly relentless with one good song after the next. A few times, I said to myself, “I didn’t know they sand THIS song!” while other times I was saying, “I FORGOT they sang this song!” The sound was really good, the tempo was upbeat (mostly) and the band were just so much FUN to watch and enjoy! Of course, The Psychedelic Furs didn’t disappoint in ANY way. They played all of the greats and played them as I hoped they would; precise and with enthusiasm. Richard Butler is so incredibly animated during the show. The band mates all play ‘to the crowd’ by singing straight into the multiple cell phones being held up by concertgoers. All along, the entertainment they provided was passed only by how good they sounded together. Having Squeeze make impromptu appearances towards the end of The Psychedelic Furs’ set was really fun. Both bands came out on stage at the very, very end to share one big ovation … absolutely brilliant! Good venue … my first time at The Pearl in Las Vegas. Access to drinks/toilets was fast and simple from all levels of the theater (4 floors?).

    Boring

by Mike on 10/17/23Pearl Concert Theater at Palms Casino Resort - Las Vegas

Psychedelic Furs were okay, I expected better. Squeeze however was awesome! Glad they came on first. The Pearl theater is a great venue, very comfortable and all seats have a nice view of the stage

    Squeeze crushed it

by ML on 10/17/23Pearl Concert Theater at Palms Casino Resort - Las Vegas

From the title you can tell what I thought. Squeeze crushed it. I almost felt bad for the Psychedelic Furs for having to play after Squeeze. It’s not that the Furs aren’t a good band, but WOW Squeeze was incredible.

Not as engaging I had hoped it would be.

by Eh. on 10/16/23Vina Robles Amphitheatre - Paso Robles

Took my son who is a total 80's music fan as I. We were bored, frankly. Squeeze was really fun as an opening band but the Furs were the headliners. They sounded okay but played a lot of stuff we really did't care for, mostly crooning and slow stuff. The 3 or 4 hits they played were good and had everyone on their feet, but then back to slow stuff. Many people left early, as did we.

    Beautiful setting sound needed help

by Shirley on 10/16/23Vina Robles Amphitheatre - Paso Robles

We sure liked the venue, setup and ease of getting into this venue too. Well organized. Disappointing with the sound system and Squeeze was over produced in the base, drums over powered most songs. Really disappointing production. We were sitting left of stage and couldn’t tolerate the sound. Moved up to the lawn, after paying seat prices, to get a more balanced sound.

    Voice Issues

by Izzy on 10/15/23Vina Robles Amphitheatre - Paso Robles

Squeeze put on a great show. Psychedelic Furs…. Well…I love Richard Butler so I say this regretfully - but the voice just isn’t up to par for live concerts. He tried his best, but it was obvious to everyone around me. The voice was very weak. The guy next to me said the same thing happened last time he saw them. 😐

    Solid 4.5/5

by Amber on 10/15/23Vina Robles Amphitheatre - Paso Robles

The energy and sound took me right back to the 80s. They may have aged, as we all have, but they are still giving it their all!

    It was ok…

by VoiceOfReason on 10/15/23Vina Robles Amphitheatre - Paso Robles

The psychedelic furs seemed bored. Like playing the fan favorites for 40 years might do to a group. The sound quality was trash. Every song seemed a mushed up puddle of notes. The only discernible pieces were the brass who nailed it. However, the band Squeeze were spot on. Even after decades they seemed genuinely happy to be performing. The vocals crisp, the music well balanced and mixed. They were great. Neither group played long and neither group played encore.

I wish the Furs had a little more Squeeze

by Jo Jo B on 10/15/23Vina Robles Amphitheatre - Paso Robles

Squeeze opened at Vino Robles the weather was perfect and they were AMAZING! I sang and danced while sipping my Albariño! Now the Furs (who I have seen multiple times were actually not great. The bass reverberated covering up the vocals. The lead singers a lot of fun to watch and his vocals got better but it was okay! Excellent venue and I love we could get real tickets!!!

    Squeeze/Furs

by JS on 10/15/23Vina Robles Amphitheatre - Paso Robles

Fantastic concert! Both bands rocked it. The music still stands and there’s something good for the soul to be reunited with my teenaged self. Don’t hesitate. Go see Squeeze and The Psychedelic Furs. We drove four hours in Bay Area traffic to see them. Worth it!

    Backyard Experience

by Cr8tivPro on 10/15/23Vina Robles Amphitheatre - Paso Robles

This show was amazing. It felt like I was in a backyard watching an intimate concert. Squeeze blew the doors off the venue and then when the Psychedelic Furs took the stage it was like heaven. Richard Butler never sounded better! The venue was so nice and relaxed.

    Just OKay

by JPK on 10/15/23Vina Robles Amphitheatre - Paso Robles

The music was good for both the Squeeze and the Psychedelic Furs, but you couldn’t make out the words of the lead singers. I don’t know if it was bad mixing or just weak voices. The audience was charged up but I thought it was just OK 👌

    Old vs New

by Adam on 10/12/23The Sound - Del Mar

We've seen several of the bands from our childhood years. It still amazes me that they are so insistent on playing more new material than old. One only has to observe the crowd. Old song equals a crowd cheering and dancing. New song equals a crowd with a blank stare on their faces, unfamiliar with your new material and having no desire to become familiar with it. Play what we came for, not what your record label requested! What happen to being a rebel? Squeeze was a one-hit-wonder in the 80's. Yet they were allowed to essentially play an entire concert before Psychedelic Furs came on. It was painful to watch. Finally, The Sound venue needs work. The only seats that do not require you to stand are the Left Terrace seats. About 10 seats.

    They sounded great

by Liz Kenny on 10/12/23The Sound - Del Mar

Squeeze was the opening band and felt they should have been the featured band. Squeeze was amazing and Psychedelic Furs sounded great but just didn’t get the crowd going.

    Squeeze and the Furs

by JD on 10/12/23The Sound - Del Mar

First time ro the sound. Excellent venue, with good sight lines and sound. Easy parking, and a bit of space to roam around between bands. No line for drinks, and my wife said the woman's bathroom had a short line. Squeeze opened and were very solid, playing their hits and the crowd danced and followed the bands lead. I would absolutely see them again. The Furs came on, but unfortunately, their four or five hits were blended into a sleepy and uninspired set. After “Pretty in Pink” was played, a 30% exodus to the parking lot happened. We stayed till the end when they played the last two hits, but the Furs had already lost the crowd. Squeeze should have been the headliner as they had the crowds attention start to finish. A 40 minute opening slot for the Furs would have been fine.

Squeeze were fabulous. The Furs sound old and not aging well

by Disappointed on 10/10/23Hard Rock Live Sacramento - Wheatland

Squeeze are fantastic, this the first time I’ve seen them, they worked hard and wowed the crowd. The Furs I’ve seen many times, and I’ve the last few years they’ve got progressively worse. The lead singer is awful, and walked off stage at the end without the rest of the band. Won’t be seeing them again.
