About

THE O'JAYS IN CONCERT:

When it comes to classy, color-coordinated, old-school soul showmanship, nobody can touch the O'Jays. Taking the stage in matching suits to perform beloved classics from their decade-spanning catalog, the debonair trio never fails to transport audiences back to the good old days of "Love Train" and "For the Love of Money." Hot off the heels of their 2013 induction into the R&B Music Hall of Fame, the O'Jays will treat fans to several highly anticipated appearances in 2014.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Formed in Ohio in 1958, The O'Jays experienced moderate success throughout the '60s with a string of minor hits like "Lonely Drifter" and  "Lipstick Traces." On the verge of calling it quits in the early '70s, the band finally got their big break after signing to Philadelphia International for their platinum-selling 1972 single "Back Stabbers." The song established them as a key player in the Philadelphia soul movement, a funk-infused brand of soul that pioneered many of the elements later adopted by disco. A string of hits would follow throughout the '70s, including epochal No. 1 smash "Love Train," creating a legacy the band continues to honor today with their spirited performances on tour.

FANS WHO BOUGHT TICKETS SAY:

"They sounded great and put on a really great show. They sang all of their popular songs, ending with For the Love of Money...which brought the house down. Everyone was on their feet, dancing and singing and really enjoying the show."

"This was a great show. They performed their old-school moves and wore matching outfits, something you don't see with ‘newer’ performers."

"The show was awesome. The O'Jays took me down memory lane and back. The show was attended by ages 20-80 and all had a great time."

  • Great!! Great!! Great!!

by Raven02 on 12/4/09BERGEN PERFORMING ARTS CENTER - EnglewoodRating: 5 out of 5

It was really good. I have always been a fan of their music but have never seen them in concert. I got the tickets for my mother, for her birthday and she had a great time. She knew all the songs and at the end took pictures and has her book signed. It was really nice of the guys to sign autographs. Not only would I recommended it to other people, I would go see them again.

I have never seen the OJay's In concert before. My sister and I enjoyed every minute of the show. We saw people we thought were gone on to glory; and heard songs that we did'nt know someone sung. The only down fall was that it was not advertised like it should have been. I told alot of people I went to the show and they said they never heard about it! Many people would have love to come. Very empty in the place. Like they say the show must go on; My family member and I had a BLAST!!

  • Stylistics, Whisper & O'Jays

    by Emenari3 on 12/1/09Star Plaza Theatre - MerrillvilleRating: 4 out of 5

Considering the stage marquee was emblazoned with '50 Years' high above the heads of the masterful O'Jays one would be hard pressed to truly appreciate their timeless quality. Being in the business of show business for 50 years has done them well, quite well. But let's put it into perspective. Sharing the bill were The Stylistics, featuring the original lead singer Russell Tompkins and venerable the Whispers. A show of pure heavyweights if there ever was one. All three groups have that personal signature style and all hailed from Philly (although the Whispers were originally from Los Angeles). A testament to that city's unhealed contribution to American R&B/Soul music. They really don't take a backseat to Motown as some might believe. In fact, they've outlasted the trend novelty of 'Motown' by some decades as far as it goes. When the O'Jays were a fledgling group in the late 60s Motown was Hall of Fame standards were set in stone. Yet in the soul strewn yin yards in Philly groups like The Intruders, The Whispers, The Vibrations, The Spinners (yet they recorded for Motown), Harold Melvin & The Bluenotes, The Delphonics and in the 70s came a virtual bevy of talents such as MFSB, Billy Paul, The Tramps, The Ethics and Blue Magic amongst others. They all left indelible marks on the music landscape. On top of the fray are the true survivors, The Stylistics, Whispers and O'Jays. All were in rare form on the night of Saturday, November 27, 2009 at the Star Plaza Theatre. Opening were the 'New' Stylistics with Russell Thompkins. And what an opening act indeed. Moving at a seamless pace thru all their repertoire their classic soul rev-ed and readied the clamoring crowd. These are members of a 'newly' formed group by Russell Thompkins leadership for the group 'The Stylistics' are leader by formers members and are concurrently on tour as well. With all that said all three groups were dynamic! although the O'Jays show was a little too short. The Whispers partied so hard you were drained by the time the O'Jays arrived. Also there was too long a period between shows.

  • WHISPERS

    by Soul1 on 12/1/09Star Plaza Theatre - MerrillvilleRating: 4 out of 5

The WHISPERS were not very entertaining, fat and out of shape... Did not sing enough of the hits that made them famous. RUSSEL THOMPKIN'S NEW STYLISTICS, good but not as good as "The Stylistics". Russel Thompkins started out slow but picked up steam halfway through the show and finished strong. His backups were ok but again can't compare to the "The Stylistics". The O'Jays are always on top of their game, they gave the people what they wanted, all of the hits that made them famous. Eddie's voice was very strong and riviting...

  • The Whispers were hot!!!!!!

by Katteyez on 12/1/09Star Plaza Theatre - MerrillvilleRating: 3 out of 5

I really do think that the O'Jays is like one of my most favorite groups of all time. This experience was not quite what I expected, I thought I would get more from them and was really disappointed.

  • by LARCHGO on 12/1/09Star Plaza Theatre - MerrillvilleRating: 5 out of 5

All of the groups were class acts. It was my first time seeing the Stylistics they were great. You know it is a good concert when the audience knows the words, sings along and dances in the aisle.

  • auesome show

by jhuntpate on 11/30/09Star Plaza Theatre - MerrillvilleRating: 5 out of 5

I did go to the show and I thought the Stylistics were very good. They were very responsive to the audience and were worth the money. The whispers were also awesome and entertaining. My all time favorite though was the O'Jays. Their movements and harmony left nothing to be desired. I see them whenever they are in town because I love their performance.

  • Stylistics, O'Jays, and those awesome Whispers

Just a good time. Rocked the house. Mellow music that brought back so many memories. Excellent sound and energy throughout the show.

by wwsbigdaddy on 11/30/09BERGEN PERFORMING ARTS CENTER - EnglewoodRating: 3 out of 5

The concert was good.We thought they were going to be peforming for more than 1 hour.Kinda felt deprived in that aspect and they never really got a chance to get the crowd out of their seats.Other than that the seats were excellent and the theater was nice and cozy.

    by Seventiesbaby1 on 11/30/09Star Plaza Theatre - MerrillvilleRating: 5 out of 5

This is my second time going to the show and it was great. I will definitely be back next year. I thought the Whispers did a great job and their band had so much energy. I missed Nick though. The O'Jays were fantastic seeming most of my favorite songs. I just wish that people would get there on time because it is very distracting.

Show was great. We were hoping for a longer show ( 1 hour of play time ) This was their 50th anniversary show.

  • Stylistics - Still Got It!

by kinohrev on 11/30/09Star Plaza Theatre - MerrillvilleRating: 5 out of 5

Went to see the O'Jay's and they were very good, but the Stylistics were unbelievable. Hit after hit and they have not lost a thing. Really took me back to memory lane. As soon as I can, I am buying their Greatest Hit c.d. The Star Plaza is a great venue. Was concerned that seats were in balcony, but the seats were great.

  • Fabulous As Usual

This is my second time seeing the O'Jays this year, and as usual they put on a great show.

  • Memorable

by worlybird on 11/29/09Star Plaza Theatre - MerrillvilleRating: 4 out of 5

My advice to anyone considering a concert featuring either one of these artist do not wait or hesitate because they are all still on top of their game, and the way music is changing. not to knock any of todays performers but, wait a minute I am knocking them because they can;t touch Russel Thompkin and the new stylistics, Eddie Levert ,Walter Williams and the Ojays and last but not least Walter and Scotty of the Whispers these guys sound great

  • Ojay, Whispers, Russell Thompkins New Stylistics

    by CEW2 on 11/29/09Star Plaza Theatre - MerrillvilleRating: 5 out of 5

The night began with Russell Thompkins and the New Stylistics taken us back so hard that the place was jumping. I believe they touch at lease one person with a certain song. The whispers rocked and gave us a débuted of their new CD that they promised their mother they would do. Of course the OJays look great in their red and white and sang oh did they sing. This was an evening to remember.

  • The Ojay's were excellent as usual!!!

    by pinkie32165 on 11/29/09Star Plaza Theatre - MerrillvilleRating: 5 out of 5

All three groups were excellent and performed their hits that they knew we'd love...it was great!!!

  • Foul play.

by Wiser on 11/29/09Star Plaza Theatre - MerrillvilleRating: 1 out of 5

The Ojay’s, whom I have seen many times, have become a foul-mouthed, sexually explicit group. I found them offensive the last few concerts, and will not attend any more concerts where such "Foul play" is served as entertainment. I will have to be content with their past hits which I own, and have enjoyed for years. Most of those attending the concert on 11-28-2009, seemed not to mind the foul language, or the sexually explicit words and actions of the O'Jays. But to each their own, I did not enjoy the concert. The whispers are about women, sex and lovemaking, with only a few foul words. Most women seem to like the Whispers and their music. As a man, I do not care for them. Again to each their own. The "New Stylistics" was the best act of the three billed, and clean. No foul language, or sexual body language or words. They came on first and were the best in my eyes. I would pay to see them again.
