About

Over the past 20 years, The New Pornographers have proven themselves one of the most excellent bands in indie rock. They have released nine studio albums, including their classic debut Mass Romantic and their latest 2023's Continue as a Guest, which marked their debut for Merge Records.

They've constantly offered new sonic surprises with every album, and have established themselves alongside modern luminaries like Yo La Tengo and Superchunk when it comes to their ability to evolve while still retaining what made them so special in the first place. Of the newest record, New York Magazine lauded, "The New Pornographers are a massive unit bursting with unique and intersecting talents...the band's ninth album serves another helping of their signature dish."

The band's new single "Ballad of the Last Payphone" is out now with a new full-length album slated for release in 2026 - more details to come.

Critical acclaim for The New Pornographers:

"Over the course of their 20-plus-year career, the New Pornographers have often specialized in catchy ambiguity. If leader Carl Newman was just a machine cranking out power-pop tunes, it would get boring. But there's also a lot of mixed emotions going on under the surface of their studiously nuanced pop-rock formalism--like if Cheap Trick was as quick-witted as Steely Dan, or the Romantics were as thoughtful as R.E.M."

- Rolling Stone

"Pure, blissfully irresistible power pop"

- NPR Music

"[The New Pornographers] make catchy, sophisticated alternate-universe hits."

- Stereogum

  • New Pornographers a cheery, house-rocking act

by cookiefiend on 8/6/10Orpheum Theatre - MadisonRating: 4 out of 5

Saw the New Pornographers at The Orpheum, Madison WI, 8/4. The band played a delightful mix of old favorites and new songs from "Together." They had a positive energy as a group and the music kept the crowd on their feet. I would have liked more rapport with the audience, but I understand that touring may make every new city, every new venue, and every new anonymous crowd a bit repetitive; to the audience the band is in town one night, but to the band the audience is one of several in a week. Energy toward the audience and rapport can take a hit from that. The sound mixing could have used some help; the multi-layered sound of the New Pornographers didn't fully translate through the speakers (but maybe I was standing too close to the speakers). Overall, though, I love this band, I loved hearing old and new songs, and I would definitely see them again.

  • Bands Good, Sound System Not So Much

by Anonymous on 8/5/10Orpheum Theatre - MadisonRating: 4 out of 5

Once again the New Pornographers put on an amazing show, despite the sound system's repeated efforts to derail them. Neko Case is a must see in person as that's the only way to truly appreciate her vocals. That being said the sound system was horrible at the show. There was a constant reverb all night long over the speakers. It's a credit to how good the New Pornographer are that they were still able to put on a great show despite the technical limitations. The opening act, The Dodos, actually turned out to be quite good as well. It's the first opening act that I've seen in quite a while that didn't completely make me feel like I was wasting my time.

  • The Dodos were AMAZING!!

by Cleome on 8/4/10Ogden Theatre - DenverRating: 4 out of 5

Neko Case is incredible, but, with such a large band, and so many egos involved, The New Pornographers were just too much for the Ogden Theater. On stage, there even appeared to be tension between two of the members of the band. (I won't name names.) The Dodos, however, were incredible!! Their performance was flawless, and even with the emphatic and inspiring sounds of the dueling guitar and drums, the melodic sounds of the vibraphone were still crucial for the amalgamation and originality of each of the band's songs. Just amazing!!

Truly an amazing show in a sweet venue. Well worth the drive.

  • The dodos killed it!!

by Bettyjames on 8/3/10Ogden Theatre - DenverRating: 4 out of 5

i had purchased the ticket to see the dodods and was also excited to see the new pornographers play. when the dodos came out, they seemed to be in good spirits and to be focused on the set, which is more than i could sday for the very first band. They didn't play for as long as i had hoped but they played all of the songs i wanted to hear for as little time as they had. musically, when they played, the amount of talent was ripping the venue apart by the seems. the quality was fantastic. When the new pornographers came out, the crowd fell quiet in an anticipating hush, all seeming to wonder what song they would play first. when the first few chords were anounced of "sing me spanish techno" the crowd roared with excitment. and, for the life of me, during their entire set, i couldn's find one person who was not dancing... it was a great show. i assume that it was due to the time-crunched set list, but the only thing i can say that's even a little negative, is that they didn't engage with the crowd as much as i had hoped. awesome show, nevertheless. it was a garenteed good time

  • Incredible

by LavaLava on 8/2/10Showbox at the Market - SeattleRating: 5 out of 5

I had an excellent time. I had never seen New Pornographers live before and I wasn't sure how their music would translate in a live setting, but all of my fears were quickly dispelled when they started right off with a super-tight rendition Sing Me Spanish Techno. All of them are amazing musicians and their talents are quite apparent in the live show. But, the thing that grabbed me the most was the power of their vocals. They captured all the layers of vocal complexity on the records beautifully and I was almost moved to tears. Couldn't recommend this band more highly.

  • Good show... Sleepy crowd.

by Albertomba on 8/2/10Liberty Hall - LawrenceRating: 4 out of 5

The New Pornographers put on a lively show that was full of energy but the crowd participation was largely unremarkable. Recommended nonetheless...

  • Good Music But Far Too Loud

by arcoain on 8/2/10Showbox at the Market - SeattleRating: 3 out of 5

All bands overmixed to the point of clipping. Nearly unlistenable for much of the concert. Good energy, decent music.

No histrionics, No fancy production, Just solid, awesome sound! All big wig band members present and accounted for, albeit one who had to be occasionally summoned to the stage. Perfectly Harmonized - as always! Thanks guys for a great performance!

  • Great show at the Fonda

by nicepenguins on 7/21/10The Music Box - HollywoodRating: 4 out of 5

I really liked the New Pornographers and the Dodos. I felt like the sound mix was a bit off at the beginning of the New Pornographers' set, which made it a little tough to hear some of Neko's vocals. Other than that, one of my favorite bands, loved hearing them live again. If you weren't a particular fan of them and just like going to shows, it was also a good value because there were three shows and it went from ~8:30- 12:30, for around $30. Music box was a nice venue too, very intimate and you can dance a little. I saw them previously at the wiltern and you can't really move around there.

  • Wow!!!

by tlist on 7/21/10The Music Box - HollywoodRating: 5 out of 5

New Pornographers are every bit and more of what's on their studio releases. Any one of them could do a show by themselves, and to put them all together--wow!!! No disappointments, and The Music Box as a good venue with great customer service is recommended. Oh yeah, the opening bands (Imaad Wasif, then the Dodo's) were excellent as well. I figured we'd want to get to the main act quick, but they made the over two hours time they used very enjoyable.

  • New Pornographers at the Music Box

by burymylovely on 7/21/10The Music Box - HollywoodRating: 4 out of 5

The only thing that kept this show from being amazing was the behavior Dan Bejar. They had to wait for him to show up on stage for his songs and when he was only playing guitar, he had his back turned to the audience. It was weird and took away from the show. Everyone else however, was awesome. They played and sang their hearts out. I wish the sound mix had been better. It was difficult to hear the vocals, which are so important for this group. Overall very good show.

All that keeps running through my head about last night was - it was like Christmas morning when I was 7-years-old...only better.

  • Boring Porn

by markdiggit on 7/20/10The Music Box - HollywoodRating: 1 out of 5

I saw the New Porns at the Fonda in Hollywood on July 19th. This was one of worst shows I've been to. The pace was terrible and so was the set list. This is the fifth time that I've seen this band and they too looked bored. Shows cost too much money now for bands to just go through the motions.
