About

Completing their seventh studio album was a hard-won victory for The Milk Carton Kids, but I Only See the Moon was worth the effort for Kenneth Pattengale and Joey Ryan. What started as a three-week recording session in the fall of 2021, with Pattengale producing the contemporary folk duo himself for the first time, stretched into a months- long project that found the pair digging deeper into their craft than ever before. With a new studio of their own in Los Angeles and the realization that they were in no hurry, The Milk Carton Kids took the time they needed to be fully satisfied with I Only See the Moon. The three-time Grammy nominees sound refreshed on 10 new songs distilled to the essence of The Milk Carton Kids: two voices blended together in spellbinding harmony, accompanied by subtly perfect acoustic instrumentation. Turns out that's a tough sound to get just right, but I Only See the Moon shows just how much Pattengale and Ryan were willing to work for it.

    Great show! Unique experience

by Greg C on 8/29/22Ludlow Garage Cincinnati - Cincinnati

Been a long time fan of the Milk Carton Kids, but never seen them live. It was a fantastic show, unique in presentation and entertaining throughout. They are intelligent, thoughtful and professional musicians. I really had a good time.

    Awesome show and venue!

by Steve on 8/28/22Ludlow Garage Cincinnati - Cincinnati

We've seen the MCKs twice now and Joey and Kenneth never disappoint. They are fabulous performers and musicians. Ludlow Garage is a very cool venue; a smaller more intimate setting that puts you right there with the performers. A great evening!

    MCK never disappoint

    by M. W. on 8/10/22

I have seen them 5 or 6 times and cannot get enough. They are engaging with the audience and the music is simply ethereal. Go if you ever have the chance.

    Milk Carton Kids - AMAZING

by Ted on 4/13/22Bowery Ballroom - New York

I love The Milk Carton Kids and this was my first time seeing them live. It was a general admission show at the Bowery Ballroom. Its small, intimate, no seating. I love seeing shows there. I went in with really high expectations and the Milk Carton Kids surpassed all of them. On every level they were simply phenomenal. The singing, the harmonies, the musicianship - AMAZING. And the sound at the venue was excellent. The vocals and guitars sounded great. The only mistake I made was being stupid enough to pay for more expensive tickets at a general admission show. I assumed with tiered pricing there would somehow be seats this time. Nope. I could have paid half as much and had the exact same experience. Regardless it was an incredible show and I definitely got my money's worth. Go see The Milk Carton Kids!!

Great music / Not a fan of the venue

by Incredible music on 4/13/22Bowery Ballroom - New York

I had to give 5 stars for the music . However the venue is one ⭐️. Their music is in need of seating . It’s meditative , reflective , and can take u to a different realm . That needs to be done sitting down . Also , it was deceiving . My ticket said 7 pm but the show wasn’t until 9 pm . Again standing that whole time wasn’t pleasant ..

    Awesome

by Rickey S. on 5/6/19Amaturo Theater at Broward Center - Ft Lauderdale

I have waited a long time for The Milk Carton Kids to come to South Florida, and I wasn't disappointed. They put on a great show with their older songs mixed with the new-more heavily instrumental- works from their latest album. The crowd was not as large as I expected (go figure) but more than made up in enthusiasm what they lacked in numbers. If you weren't there you missed a terrific show.

    Excellent Show

by Louis Arslanian on 5/6/19Amaturo Theater at Broward Center - Ft Lauderdale

The Milk Carton Kids are simply amazing. Kenny plays the guitar so well, Joey on the harmony. Singing together, they sound so beautiful. And, they are funny as shit, and can just ad lib, too. I've heard people say they sound like Simon and Garfunkle, and are like the Smothers Brothers. That's fair, and not fair, too. They have their own sound, and yes...they harmonize ridiculously well, sounding as one. And, they just have their own brand of humor (as evidenced by the name of the group, I suppose). Also, the three musicians they added (upright bass, percussion/drums, keyboard/accordian) are super-talented...and, they just set a "mood." Just an excellent show that I did not want to end.

    Disappointing

by Judy on 4/18/19Duke Energy Center for the Performing Arts - Raleigh

I was really excited to see these guys in Raleigh and constantly played their (older) playlist so I'd be ready to sing along. Unfortunately they didn't sing hardly any of their older numbers and the songs they did perform were very funereal in tone. Kenneth is an amazing guitar player and Joey's banter is hilarious. Although the audience called out several songs that would have been upbeat and fun to hear, they only performed 2 songs that I knew and liked. As we left the concert hall, I got the impression that other audience members had the same feeling of disappointment.

Simon & Garfunkel meet The Smothers Brothers

by Wade on 4/14/19Duke Energy Center for the Performing Arts - Raleigh

I didn't know much about The Milk Carton Kids before attending their concert, except that they played acoustic guitars and sang nice harmonies. So I expected a pleasant evening with pleasing music. It was all that. They are terrific musicians and songwriters and their music was, indeed, very pleasing. What I didn't expect was how entertaining they were with their on-stage presence and humorous banter in between songs. I would definitely see them again.

What more can you say about these guys? Musical virtuosos, humorous, humble... a real human experience. Very fulfilling.

I love the Milk Carton Kids!

by Shuzam on 10/29/18Pantages Theatre - Minneapolis

This is the 4th time I've seen these guys play in Mpls/St Paul. They just keep getting better every time. I loved hearing them with their band too! The opening act, The Barr Brothers, were AMAZING! What a great show at The Pantages Theatre.

    Great night for 2 bands!

by LoganMG on 10/20/18The Wilbur - Boston

Let's start with the Barr Brothers.A large group for an opening act is a rare treat. Pedal guitar and harp, wow. These folks covered everything from the ethereal opening number to hard blues rock. Virtuoso slide guitar. Blue me away. The Kids were in great form. Spot on harmonies and acoustic and Spanish guitar work to die for. The friendly banter with the crowd was worth the price of admission but the song writing is what nails it for me. We need to see more of them here in Boston.

A memorable show from beginning to end. The Milk Carton Kids give you a warm, folksy, jazzy feeling. Disarming humor with incredible talent. The opening act, Sammy Miller and the Congregation were entertaining, original -- very talented. One of the best concerts ever!

    Not Lost

by lkluna on 11/3/17The Lyric Theatre - Birmingham

The Milk Carton Kids have been compared to Don & Phil Everly (from the 50s), Simon & Garfunkel (60s), and Dave Rawlings (current). All of those were popular for three generations in my family. The Kids' self-deprecating humor was even reminiscent of The Smothers Brothers. The Milk Carton Kids now rank among all those greats for me! Their acoustic voices and harmony beautifully filled up the beautiful Lyric Theatre. Thank goodness Joey and Kenneth never really made it to the cover of the school-lunch milk carton!
