THE MANHATTAN TRANSFER IN CONCERT:

Big Apple jazz fusionists and a cappella masters The Manhattan Transfer have been putting their one-of-a-kind spin on vocal music since the late '70s, and they continue to wow in concert with swinging sets full of playful covers and funky originals. After the passing of singer and founding member Tim Hauser in 2014, booming bass/baritone Trist Curless of LA-based a cappella group m-pact stepped in to fill his shoes – and he's a perfect fit. In concert the band is an electrifying embodiment of their upbeat downtown sound, bopping around while they deliver their pitch-perfect vocals and encouraging fans to clap along to the jazzy rhythms of their ace drummer. The group's signature guy-girl vocal interplay sounds fresher than ever, and ticket buyers lucky enough to see them work their magic will be humming favorites like "The Boy from New York City" and "Route 66" all the way home.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

The Manhattan Transfer was formed in 1969 by Tim Hauser and an early lineup that appeared on the group's 1971 debut album Jukin'. Hauser parted ways with the band's first incarnation a few years later, and in 1975 he and a new roster released The Manhattan Transfer's self-titled sophomore album. The record was a critical and commercial success, cracking the Top 40 on the Billboard 200 and earning the group their first hit with the song "Operator." A string of popular singles followed in the late '70s and early '80s including "Chanson D'Amour" and "Twilight Zone/Twilight Tone," and in 1982 The Manhattan Transfer became the first group to win Grammys in both the popular and jazz categories ("The Boy From New York City" won Best Pop Performance and "Until I Met You" took home Best Jazz Performance). The Grammy buzz continued in 1985 when their eighth album Vocalese earned 12 nominations, nearly beating Michael Jackson's Thriller for most nominations ever received by a single album. The group maintained a prolific release schedule throughout the '80s and '90s, and in 1998 they were inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame. Hauser and company released six albums during the '00s including An Acapella Christmas and The Chick Corea Songbook, but in 2014 Hauser passed away from a heart attack. Singer Trist Curless stepped in to take his place shortly afterward, and the new lineup continues to honor the band's hallowed vocal legacy with rousing performances on tour.

    These guys ROCKED the HOUSE!!!

    by thrilled001 on 5/29/10Snoqualmie Casino-Ballroom - Snoqualmie

The concert had been preceded by word from friends that this group was far past their prime, even throwing temper tantrums or showing negative attitudes at previous events... All I can tell you is that last night, the Manhattan Transfer had the sellout crowd in their hands and they worked the room to the full extent. We laughed and clapped and were amazed with their vocal pyrotechnics. They performed an obligatory set of their hits which were duly appreciated, and promoted their newest album which is a joint venture with Chick Corea - neat stuff. They really should update their picture - anybody claiming a touring career since the '70s is necessarily going to look different from the picture above! They demonstrated their professionalism and marvelous talent over and over - they should glory in their vintaqe, not hide from it.

    manhattan transfer Still Sounding Great

by Anonymous on 2/19/10Dennis Flyer Memorial Theatre - Blackwood

The venue was small and the sounds were great. I've been a fan for a long time and have seen them many times. They still sound great and look like they're having fun. I would reccomend to any fan. Only 400 of us saw them but the way they performed you would have though thousands in attendance. Finding the actual theater was a little tough due to no clear signs leading us there. Other than that great evening. Played most all the classics except Ray's Rock House which I would have love to have heard

by MomMom on 2/19/10Dennis Flyer Memorial Theatre - Blackwood

First time at Dennis Flyer Auditorium, as well as MT in person, and extremely pleased with both.. Thought they were amazingly talented, especially the female voices and ranges. The back-up band was multi-talented as well!

    Manhattan Transfer was fantastic!

by Kathryn7 on 2/19/10Dennis Flyer Memorial Theatre - Blackwood

I have been a fan of the Manhattan Transfer for 30 years and last night's performance did not disappoint. Their fabulous harmony, scat, and featured individual numbers were amazing. They are one of the few groups that can can pull off jazz, the blues, soul, rock, or love songs and have it all sound wonderful. It was a great performance and they are still number one in my book!

    by p2j2m on 2/18/10Wilbur Theatre - Boston

4th time seeing Manhattan Transfer since 1980. Chick Corea songs unfamiliar, but done well. The singers got better as the night went on. The band was tight.

    BLOWN AWAY!!!!!

    by Barbarella17 on 2/18/10Wilbur Theatre - Boston

I've been a fan for years, but I never saw them live. This has got to be one of the best concerts I've ever seen - they did songs that I knew and didn't know, but it didn't matter as I enjoyed them all equally. I would definitely go to see them again - unfortunately, they aren't in the Boston area that often, so I'll have to wait patiently until they come back. They are absolutely amazing!!!!!

Manhattan Transfer is like taking the A Train

by Brennschluss on 2/18/10Wilbur Theatre - Boston

It is really beyond me to describe how much I enjoyed the show. New jazz vocals, the old but still great fun "Boy from NYC", Java Jive made for an evening that transcended nostalgia.

Loved the older, group standards and a few of the solo numbers. Personally, was less impressed by the new stuff (not a big Chick Corea fan, I guess). Still do and always will love Janis' voice!

What fun! Their voices have only gotten better with time, and the repetoire grown richer. You know what made this concert so much fun? They looked like they were having the time of their lives...even after all these years! The band was talented and into it

Do not hesitate to see the absolute best pop vocal jazz group in the world! We guests were treated to heavenly vocals, a fabulous set list of Christmas favorites and group personal selections. Did I mention a complete, wonderfully accomplished orchestra, to accompany this incomparable show. I'm still flying! Merry Christmas to you all! Thank you for an unforgettable evening! SimplyRed

    They never disappoint

by Anonymous on 12/10/09Potawatomi Casino/Northern Lights Theater - Milwaukee

My husband and I went to see The Manhattan Transfer Christmas show and both agree they were fabulous! We have seen them in concert at least 5 times, this being the second Christmas show and they NEVER disappoint! I was disappointed at the number of audience members and hope that it was because there was a major snow storm and not due to a lack of interest. We want them to continue to do concerts in Milwaukee. Loved all the songs (they did not perform Christmas music exclusively) a very nice mix of holiday, old MT classics and at least one song we had never heard them sing before. I enjoyed the fact that they used local musicians for their "orchestra". A very nice touch

Unfortunately, we had a severe winter snowstorm here and we were unable to drive up to Milwaukee for this event. We are heartbroken about it because we have been waiting to see the Manhattan Transfer for years and years. We just love them! Now we will probably never get another opportunity like this was. But, we are totally snowed in here in Northern Illinois and I'm sure Milwaukee is too. Would love to hear how others enjoyed the event! I'm rating them with 5 stars because I'm sure that it was great!!
