As long time Billy Joel fan (1st concert Jan. '74) having the opportunity to see his core band in intimate venues has been a treat for me. Russ Javors (guitar), Richie Canata (Sax, clarinet & keyboards) and Liberty DeVitto (percussion) with with Billy for some 25 years. The unfortunate passing of Doug Stegmeyer (bass) left incomplete the true core of the band following the breakups. In their mid 70's, these three still bring the intensity along with a very personal and heartfelt performance. I was enthralled by Richie Canata's artistry. Being in the front row directly in front of him was a big plus in the ability to appreciate what he does and how well he does it. Liberty DeVitto is one of the hardest hitting and creative percussionists I've ever had the pleasure to watch and listen to. At 74, it amazes me where he gets the strength and passion to deliver what he does. Russ Javors' guitar was very subdued in the mix and it was disappointing to have not heard his music evenly blend with the other instruments. The large majority of songs came from Turnstiles and The Stranger. "Scenes From an Italian Restaurant" got the crown up, whistling and singing from beginning to end. The resonance from the NY and NY-FL crowd was unmistakable. As always, the guys came out front after the show and signed photos (that they provided free of charge) albums (mine too), took photos and hobnobbed with the fans. Kudos to Dan Orlando who assumes the "Billy Joel" role. Large shoes and fingerprints to fill. He actually reminded me of a young Frankie Valli (voice and persona) and it took a bit of getting used to after having seen the band with Dave Clark who was also great behind the ivories. Don't pass up a chance to see this band of the opportunity presents itself.
