About

The Infamous Stringdusters in Concert

"With a nod to the past and a firm foot down on the gas toward the future, the 'Dusters... don't leave bluegrass behind; they're stretching it from within." - New York Times

"...these stellar bluegrass players are pushing the music forward." - David Dye/World Cafe

The Infamous Stringdusters rise to new heights on their ninth full-length record Rise Sun. For the album, the GRAMMY Award-winning quintet - Andy Falco [guitar], Chris Pandolfi [banjo], Andy Hall [dobro], Jeremy Garrett [fiddle], and Travis Book [double bass]-expanded their signature sound by perfecting their seamless fusion of All-American-bluegrass and rock.

Once again sail into uncharted territory moored only by their expressive patchwork of All-American bluegrass threaded together with strands of rock, jazz, funk, country, old-time, and more.

As they approached this latest body of work, the group's ambition matched their outsized creative curiosity.

"Rise Sun was sparked by the feeling of wanting something better for the world - more love, more awareness, and more compassion," says Hall. "It's a message of taking care of each other, our planet, and ourselves. We all shared this feeling as evidenced by the songs we brought to the project. It's the feeling of a rising sun as opposed to a dark night. Sometimes a message of hope is less popular than one of despair, but it's much-needed nevertheless."

It's also a message that 13 years, eight studio projects, and nearly 1,000 shows prepared the boys to properly present.

The Infamous Stringdusters stand out as the rare group who whose dynamic musicianship can be showcased with contemporary artists on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert one night and jamming on the legendary Red Rocks Amphitheatre alongside The Grateful Dead's Phil Lesh the next.

Engendering a sense of impassioned fandom, they band have attracted a faithful audience that continues to grow. Moreover, their powerful music and performances paved the way for a GRAMMY Award win in the category of "Best Bluegrass Album" for 2017's Laws of Gravity.

When it came time to record what would become Rise Sun, they pushed themselves to evolve once more.

"Rise Sun is the latest chapter in the progression of our sound," says Pandolfi. "It's been a long arc that includes evolution on all fronts - writing, arranging, performing, and maybe most importantly, growing as humans who have more to say as the journey rolls on. New albums are the time when we write and introduce our strongest original material. On our last release Laws of Gravity, we really started to hit our stride with recording live in the studio. Rise Sun is another big step in that direction."

For the first time, the band chose the song order before actually recording. Additionally, they maintained that order throughout the process, recording the songs in sequence which resulted in a natural flow. This choice, "gives it the feeling of a story as you listen down," says Hall. It represented a moment of collective confidence.

"We self-produced the last album, so we felt validated in a sense that our instincts were sound," adds Book. "We came into this one with some confidence. Any doubts about our band or our mission had dissipated. What remained was a deep sense of purpose and love."

"The GRAMMY put some high-octane gas in our tanks as well," grins Garrett. "We also wanted to rise to the challenge of making a follow-up project worthy of what we had done in the past."

The Infamous Stringdusters introduce the album with the handclap-driven gallop of the title track "Rise Sun." High energy banjo powers an uplifting and undeniable refrain that immediately shines.

"It's a hopeful anthem," Book elaborates. "The sun is rising, and the light is overtaking the darkness. The idea for the melody, inspired by Southern gospel music, came to me driving out of the mountains into Georgia from my home in North Carolina. When we wrote it, I was feeling a deep sense of hope for humanity that the sun will rise again."

Then, there's the hummable instrumental "Cloud Valley," which exudes a sci-fi spirit of wonder via sonic intricacy. "Science fiction can transport you to a place of deep imagination," says Pandolfi. "We wanted to generate a soundscape for an imaginary mystical setting. It really came alive when we all got together."

Everything culminates on a heartfelt send-off with "Truth and Love." Its delicate musical backdrop transmits an important statement for The Infamous Stringdusters.

"I wrote that a few years ago and brought it back now, because I feel like the message has become more relevant today," Falco states. "The world is polarized. Everything is so extreme, and partisan politics have become a culture war. The song is a reminder of what's truly important in life - seek the truth, find your love, look up high, and aim above. Life is short, so keep your eye on what's important while you're here."

In the end, that's precisely what The Infamous Stringdusters do on Rise Sun as they boldly welcome yet another new day, new phase, and new chapter.

"We're a brotherhood, but that family extends beyond the band even," Falco leaves off. "Our music gives us an opportunity to bring some light in a world that can be dark sometimes."

    Best concert EVER!

by Holly BC on 10/16/21Greenfield Lake Amphitheater - Wilmington

I LOVE the Stringdusters, but this concert took it to a whole new level - they were amazing! Every part of the concert was outstanding, from the great customer service by each and every Live Nation employee (vaccine check, greeting area, security, ticket scan, beverage sales). The GLA venue is beautiful, and the whole experience in this intimate setting with great music and service made this the best concert I have EVER attended - and there have been a LOT! Thank you for bringing this fantastic show to Wilmington!

    "Infamous"er than ever!

    by J. C. on 1/28/20The Fillmore - San Francisco

Saw Infamous Stringdusters, also at The Fillmore, last year and this time I was absolutely even more impressed by the band...even more Infamous if that is even possible. Great extended jamming all night long. These guts are not only great individual musicians...they add up to much more as a great team! One fun highlight of the show was how they kept teasing the crowd repeatedly by playing the first moments of The Greatful Dead's "Shakedown Street". When they finally went for it, towards the end of the evening's show, it turned into a true crowd pleaser for over twenty minutes straight! The joint was jumping! WOW! Can't wait to see Infamous Stringdusters yet again...hopefully sooner rather than later for another great party together.

Wow! - Awesome show at an awesome venue

by Yada Yada on 9/17/19Sony Hall - New York

I heard these guys on Sirius for a while. They are so much better live. Really tight performance and you can tell they like what they do. This was the first time at Sony Hall. Acoustics were outstanding. Ordered the pigs in a blanket appetizer and they were pretty darn good. Overall, an excellent night out of food and music.

    Talented band with great energy!

by joandy on 3/12/19Ponte Vedra Concert Hall - Ponte Vedra Beach

I have only been to a few "string" only shows of various bands, so I didn't know what to expect. I listened to a few of their "Live" shows days prior on nugs.net and was super optimistic. A few of their songs really pulled me in. Seeing Infamous Stringdusters Live was GREAT! Really enjoyed their energy and gratitude for their new fans in Florida (their 1st show in the state). Every member of the band is super talented. The acoustic guitar solo was AMAZING! I would recommend. Ponte Vedra Concert Hall is always a great place to see a show.

by K. on 3/12/19Revolution Live - Ft Lauderdale

I saw the Infamous Stringdusters at Revolution Live in Ft. Lauderdale. The venue holds about 1,300 people and it felt near capacity. The energy was electric. I was blown away by their musicianship and how they supported each other.

by J. D. on 3/11/19Ponte Vedra Concert Hall - Ponte Vedra Beach

Great musicians...earsplitting sound mix! Would have enjoyed much more if they had dropped about 50 decibels. I will continue to listen to the "Stringdusters" on Spotify.

Awesome Dusters Show at the Fillmore!

by USChad317 on 1/23/19The Fillmore - San Francisco

Fillmore is an amazing venue. Vocals seemed a bit loud on the floor, and everything else seemed to be just in line. The Dusters are the best, and, per usual, they delivered an amazing performance that wrangled all 3 of my friends to instantly become fans for life. Thanks for another awesome show, guys!

great bluegrass, but these guys jam like pros

by jm on 1/22/19Crystal Bay Club Casino Crown Room - Crystal Bay

They played some traditional bluegrass tunes, but strayed from the traditional a bit and got into some deep jams that were brilliant, sometimes a bit dark, sometimes dreamy, but always awesome. Go see them, you won't be disappointed

A Bluegrass Festival devoid of Bluegrass

by Fleofle on 10/3/18Skyline Stage at the Mann - Philadelphia

‘Bait n Switch’ would be a far more appropriate title for the event. Change from the Mann to the concrete tomb that is the Electric Factory at the last minute...not cool. Had you booked actual Bluegrass acts, you might have sold enough tickets so you could actually afford that venue. Tolerated the dearth of Bluegrass music for 3 hours, then bailed when it became apparent that this was where music came to die. Missed Del n Dawg - could wait no more. Feel I should at least be reimbursed the insurance I purchased for an OUTDOOR EVENT that was rendered obsolete with the venue change.

by RosebudV71 on 9/28/18U.S. Cellular Stage at the Bijou Theatre - Knoxville

Best foot stompin, hand clappin, sing along with bluegrass band I have heard live in a long time. I thought the light show was gonna be over the top, but I ended up liking it. The acoustics in Bijou theatre are amazing. Would definately see this band again & again!!

    Couldn't see the show

by Volvosrule on 9/28/18U.S. Cellular Stage at the Bijou Theatre - Knoxville

I gave these tickets to my mom as a gift. She and her friend both went and they are both in their 70's. People stood in front of them the whole show and they couldn't see. The girl dancing with a beer in each hand and sloshing it on them was not good either. They asked staff if they could ask the folks to sit down and they were toold it was up to the artist if people could stand or not. Then the asked if they could find them seats where they could see and were told no. Not a great experience. When you do something for your mom as a gift, "we left early it was so bad". Is not what you want to hear!!!

    Oh yeah!

by Dabast on 7/21/18South Shore Room at Harrah's Lake Tahoe - Stateline

The moment the curtain rose on the Kitchen Dwellers to the last note of the Infamous Stringdusters set was a barrage of pure bluegrass bliss. These are two bands that are not to be missed and they know how to weave a show that can blow the mind of even a jaded vet. Some of us clearly chose to spend our post Phish hours gambling, others clearly went to sleep, those of us who caught this show (and the one the night before) made the better choice. Hot damn, what a night of music.

    Stringdusters and Aura

by Chefpirk on 1/29/18Aura - Portland

First time seeing a show at Aura. Never even been in the building when it was the Asylum, so cannot compare any changes. Venue is great, not a bad seat in the house. Usually like to be in The Pit, but being a Wednesday night show on a "school night", chose to head upstairs. We sat dead center and on the top level in comfy folding chairs with two cup holders. Bar right behind us, clean bathrooms! The stringdusters can certainly "bring it". The music, sound, lights, everything. Never hurts to open with "Big River" which I believe is Johnny Cash, but known by many Deadheads. Fleetwood Mac's "Rhiannon" was another cover done well. Lots of effects on their acoustic instruments made them very Jamband sounding. Would go to Aura again and also see Stringdusters!
