About

The Grasping Straws are a psychedelic art rock band from New York. Their grungy, jazz infused abstractions come together with a scream and a whisper in angry, angsty softness that’s raw, controlled and ever surprising.

"When she riffs over her guitar, the infatuating melody takes hold like a sinuous growth of kudzu, latching onto your senses as her fingers slide down the frets to produce an unprecedented sense of cabaret-inspired relaxation, assured with its place in the realms of rock, psychedelia, and art."  - Buzz Music

The Grasping Straws was formed in 2012 by Mallory Feuer  who, inspired by the Anti Folk movement and the music emanating from New York’s basements, started playing shows, developing, screeching, sleeping on floors, and meeting soulmates. Inspiration brought a variety of sounds and a celebration of serendipity and creating in the moment.  Their most recent recordings feature Jim Bloom (drums) Sam Goldfine (bass) and Marcus Kitchen (lead guitars), but the band is often seen live featuring many additional artists, friends and collaborators.

“We adapt to the space we're in. Musical collaboration and sharing is a study of humanness. Our recordings are moments in time captured like a sonic time capsule.”

Their self-released demos and debut album attracted glowing reviews in the underground press, and took the band on the road through much of the US, Canada and Europe opening for a host of cool bands like Illiterate Light, Messenger Birds, Bent Knee, Dish Pit, Spooky Cool, Tonsils, Camp Saint Helene, Secret Nudist Friends, Ellen Siberian Tiger, Julia Cumming, Jeffrey Lewis, A Deer A Horse, Alan Merril, Belle Skinner, Will Wood and Shilpa Ray. The Grasping Straws have performed at the legendary CMJ Festival in NYC and at Pittfest in Pittsburgh.

"The Grasping Straws are great at creating beauty from confusion and contradiction. The music is grungy rock, except when it’s jazzy folk. The lyrics are strong, heavy, and firm, yet fragile, subtle, and unstable. The stories are clear and literal, but mysterious and open-ended. It’s sure to leave any listener grasping at Straws." -Cannonball Statman for the Boog City Festival Blog|https://hes32-ctp.trendmicro.com:443/wis/clicktime/v1/query?url=https%3a%2f%2fwordpress.boogcity.com%2fboogpdfs%2fbc97.pdf&umid=1f50183b-acd5-452e-a65d-6e8f9c98e06b&auth=a3b3241658f0ddb98a3a4cffadf6aaf732573a8c-bb13a6fdeaa72e43603faba32c82efe971391143]

"There’s a real whimsical, scrawled feel about this song. Sonically, quarantine halloween is a ditty that’s been scribbled in the margins of anti-folk, but thematically, the track cuts much deeper. With self-harmonised vocals and a talent for storytelling, frontwoman Mallory Feuer sings of the pandemic, the disintegration of democracy in America, and civil unrest." -Happy Magazine|https://happymag.tv/the-grasping-straws-quarantine-halloween/]

Their latest collaboration, with video and performance artist Erica Schreiner, was shown at G Biennale and Art All Night film festivals.

The Grasping Straws’ psychedelic art rock is perfect for fans of Yeah Yeah Yeahs, van Gogh, Bjork, Cat Power and Florence Welch. They’re here to make you feel, to make you think, and they’re coming to a town near you in a van. Crying is cool. Straws aren't always plastic.
