About

Bringing their neo-psychedelic flavor to a whole new generation of fans, the Flaming Lips released their most recent album, The Terror, in April 2013. Later in the year, they released Peace Sword, an EP of songs inspired by the film Ender's Game. The Flaming Lips have constantly been on tour during the past three years, with an average of two dates per month. It's an impressive schedule, to say the least, especially if you're familiar with how one-of-a-kind the band's live shows are. At any moment, ticket buyers can expect anything from puppets to video animation, confetti-filled balloons and colored smoke shows at a Flaming Lips concert. Frontman Wayne Coyne then steps into a giant plastic bubble and walks on top of the audience – crowdsurfing at its most nuanced. The Terror lends itself well to live interpretation, invoking as it does the dystopian psychology of science fiction novels. Surrealist antics on stage reflect the wonderfully dark tone of the album. Songs like the title track and "Butterfly, How Long it Takes to Die" are hauntingly beautiful, cathartic songs about love and loss, life and death.

Wayne Coyne, his brother, Mark, and their friend, Michael Ivins founded the band in 1983. After several personnel changes, the band finally found a winning formula, and pretty soon, was cranking out albums. Transmissions from the Satellite Heart, released in 1993, hit the charts, received critical acclaim and earned the band a spot at Lollapalooza. The single, "She Don't Use Jelly," inspired a cult following and reached No. 55 on Billboard's Top 100. Coyne and company followed with several more albums, each one offering a new spin, new concept and new set of rules by which the band continued to remain fresh year after year.

    Like... whoa

by ThatEliseGirl on 8/19/09Greek Theatre - Los Angeles

I've wanted to see The Flaming Lips since 2001, and recently was turned onto The Ghostland Observatory. Both were mind blowing, providing both visual and audio love of the highest caliber. It was an absolute pleasure to witness such an outpouring of energy and goodwill from those on stage.

    Who needs Jerry Garcia?

by Jiveturkey on 8/18/09Greek Theatre - Los Angeles

With all the pot smke in the air, the sedate and aging Gen X crowd barely worked up the energy to hoot a few "whoo-whoo-whoos" at a cajoling Wayne Coyne. Nevertheless, the spectacle that the Flaming Lips have become was still entertaining enough. I've loved their music for almost 20 years now. That helped. The girl who accompanied me didn't know who they we're and she had a great time. THAT was the real barometer of how well the show went.

    Flaming Lips Do Not Dissapoint

by rferraro on 8/18/09Greek Theatre - Los Angeles

It was inreible from start to finish. The time andenergy they bring to their live shows is incredible. Ghostland Observatory got a good reaction out of the crowd considering they were playing music of a completely different genre than the Flaming Lips.

    Everyone must see this band!

by Yoshimi on 8/18/09Greek Theatre - Los Angeles

There is a reason they have been named "one of the bands you must see before you die" by countless critics. This was by far one of the best stage shows I have ever seen aside from the fact that I already loved their music. Their energy and connection with the audience made it so much fun. All shows should be this fantastic.

Flaming Lips best live show ever!

by CaptainD on 8/18/09Greek Theatre - Los Angeles

This is by far the best show ive ever seen period. From the opening acts of Stardeah and White Dwarfs nailing it to a tiny few to Ghostland Observatory making everyone dance with their amazing light show to the Lips performing so well that words cant even descirbe. From the opening moments of the show I knew it was going to great and it was. They preformed a slow version of "Fight Test" and a simply amazing piano version of "Yoshimi Battle the Pink Robots pt. 1" People were on their feet the whole time and everyone was having a great time. Would recomend to anyone to go see.

Flaming Lips - Awesome as always

by batmundo on 8/18/09Greek Theatre - Los Angeles

What more can I say? You NEED to experience it in person. Just hearing about balloons and confetti and dancing yeti and flowers and catgirls and what not just does not compare to being there. SEE THEM NOW IF YOU CAN!

The Flaming LIps were totally awesome

by Vickio on 8/18/09Greek Theatre - Los Angeles

The Flaming Lips concert was unique, high energy, created a great ora in the audience. The balloons were so awesome and the background screen added to the entire "experience". I feel they are a mix of the greats (Pink Floyd, Queen, Neil Young - yes Neil Young!). The Greek Theatre in LA is our very favorite venue ever and we traveled back to our old stomping grounds from Las Vegas for a 24 hour turnaround trip just to see the Flaming Lips who we had never heard of or heard but now are HUGE fans and will listen to for the rest of our days.

Flaming Lips can lock my lips with a little tongue

by SchweighPrncss on 8/18/09Greek Theatre - Los Angeles

A fantastic show as always! Great background images, great performance, great energy, and always as fun! I loved how he would actually talk to the audience and joke with them such as the whole idea of the "encore." He didnt want to rob us of an encore so right before the last song he walked to the side of the stage for a minute and had the audience scream and yell until he returned to sing "do you realize."

    Really cool, but...

by Trope on 8/18/09Greek Theatre - Los Angeles

The Lips were terrific as usual creating a really warm and memorable experience. But what happened to Stardeath and White Dwarfs? I like their debut album and was looking forward to seeing them. But for some reason they didn't play!

    Poor Wayne

by Deezee on 8/18/09Greek Theatre - Los Angeles

The show was terrible. Wayne was super drunk and apparently stoned, plus he had no voice left to sing with. Pomona show is gonna suck!

Flaming Lips do a Flaming Lips show

by TheGMann on 8/18/09Greek Theatre - Los Angeles

I love the Flaming Lips. I think their music is unique and brilliant. And I love the fact that they put on a true show and make it a fun concert. But, as someone who really loves their music, I'm always frustrated at their shows b/c they don't play enough songs (they're so busy playing with balloons and fog machines), and they change some of their best songs (e.g., Fight Test, Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots Part 1) from up-tempo, danceable, big beat songs into slow, acoustic sing-alongs. I wouldn't mind the sing-along once, but to miss out on the big beat versions of Fight Test and Yoshimi was very frustrating. If you've never seen them, you must. Go see them! They do a unique, fun, good feeling show. But, if you're a fan who really loves their music, be prepared for more of a fun show than a true concert.

LOCKED IN THE HEART AND MEMORY

by GMamma on 8/18/09Greek Theatre - Los Angeles

The Greek has always been one of my favorite venues because of the setting. Wayne immediately awknowledged this beauty and shared it with all of us. His encouragement to sing along was so heartwarming and uplifting that I couldn't help but let it all out. The night was perfect. If I had any form of criticism, it was not the guests, but the staff, a little more freedom to dance when it suited our fancy would have been kind. Instead we were consistently told to return to our seats. Love, Dance, Be Free.

    the lips never disappoint!

by watada on 8/18/09Greek Theatre - Los Angeles

I've seen the Flaming Lips many, many times and let me tell you, I've never seen them do a bad show. Their show has evolved from power guitar rock with touches of whimsy to music as performance art, but I love that the band has kept evolving, instead of churning out record after record of the same stuff. That being said, this latest incarnation has been around for a while, with newer things being added. The band being born was definitely a new addition since the last time I saw them, and it really got the crowd going. As soon as the lights on the stage went up, everyone stood up, and stayed that way for the whole show. You've gotta be captivating the audience for the majority of the people to stand when they have seats throughout the entire performance. That's the power of the Lips.
