About

Bringing their neo-psychedelic flavor to a whole new generation of fans, the Flaming Lips released their most recent album, The Terror, in April 2013. Later in the year, they released Peace Sword, an EP of songs inspired by the film Ender's Game. The Flaming Lips have constantly been on tour during the past three years, with an average of two dates per month. It's an impressive schedule, to say the least, especially if you're familiar with how one-of-a-kind the band's live shows are. At any moment, ticket buyers can expect anything from puppets to video animation, confetti-filled balloons and colored smoke shows at a Flaming Lips concert. Frontman Wayne Coyne then steps into a giant plastic bubble and walks on top of the audience – crowdsurfing at its most nuanced. The Terror lends itself well to live interpretation, invoking as it does the dystopian psychology of science fiction novels. Surrealist antics on stage reflect the wonderfully dark tone of the album. Songs like the title track and "Butterfly, How Long it Takes to Die" are hauntingly beautiful, cathartic songs about love and loss, life and death.

Wayne Coyne, his brother, Mark, and their friend, Michael Ivins founded the band in 1983. After several personnel changes, the band finally found a winning formula, and pretty soon, was cranking out albums. Transmissions from the Satellite Heart, released in 1993, hit the charts, received critical acclaim and earned the band a spot at Lollapalooza. The single, "She Don't Use Jelly," inspired a cult following and reached No. 55 on Billboard's Top 100. Coyne and company followed with several more albums, each one offering a new spin, new concept and new set of rules by which the band continued to remain fresh year after year.

    Unforgettable

    by ET on 8/9/23

Are you kidding me?? A thousand memorable moments rolled into one evening. My brain nearly exploded but the whole time Wayne Coyne was right by my side shining a flashlight and asking if I was alright. If you have a chance to see The Flaming Lips grab it like an electric bird and watch it fly.

Great Concert, smaller Fillmore venue is great

    by Steve O on 8/9/23

The Fillmore was the ideal place for the Flaming Lips. The smaller venue makes the stage show and the sound so much more impactful. The ease of getting drinks and real food is great.

One of the Best Shows I've Seen in 5 Decades of Concertgoing

    by FDGiac on 8/6/23

I attend a lot of concerts — on average two or three a month — so my expectations are high when I see live music, and The Flaming Lips's Fillmore show blew me away. It was an aural and visual extravaganza that had the crowd screaming in appreciation. If the Joker was a superhero instead of a supervillain, he would be Wayne Coyne, throwing confetti-filled balloons out into the audience, dancing between inflatable robots and stopping the show to have a band tech fly a remote-controlled mechanical bird around the stage. Coyne is more than just a hype man, though. He writes beguiling, humanistic songs that, with their lyrics projected on the psychedelified screen behind him, resonated profoundly. The band — Coyne's the last original member — played 'Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots' in its entirety (an anniversary of sorts); took a break; then came back and played a mixture of deep cuts and crowd favorites. All the while, Coyne exhorted the crowd to cheer, yell, scream and otherwise exorcise any negativity they harbored. (He eventually declared the Detroit crowd the loudest of the tour.) "Thank you, thank you, thank you,"he told the crowd repeatedly between songs. Right back at you, sir.

    Amazing

    by Jordan on 8/5/23

Fantastic show that I’ll never forget. Right from the start, with the inflatable dancing pink robots, everything was fun. Longest set I’ve ever seen (24 songs) including a very long encore. I’d see them again in a heartbeat.

Beautiful! But, too many commands for screams.

by Lcappy on 6/19/23Steelhouse Omaha - Omaha

I’ve seen this wonderful team for a couple decades. Always LOVE them. However, recently, I wish Wayne could get a memo, to stop demanding “I wanna hear you SCREAM! Make some noise!” Cuz, it was during every song. And I’d like to watch the beautiful visual spectacle, listen the music, dance, and not have vibe smooshed every four minutes, for him to demand screaming. I know audience feedback is important, but it was laborious, exhausting and forced. People were doing obligatory screams, in fear they would make him mad, if they didn’t. Just, shut up and play. Let us dance, listen and watch. It’s supposed to be a mesmerizing experience. Screaming on demand ruins it.

I don’t know how they play with such joy every show. Great band, great music, great theatrical production, plus a palpable feeling of love and humanity that transformed the audience into a community, a family, a convergence of souls.

The Flaming Lips are one of the best live acts!

by Shvontz on 6/19/23Steelhouse Omaha - Omaha

It was my third time seeing the Flaming Lips and I hoped they could live up to the previous two great performances. They were also playing my favorite album of theirs in its entirety! It was also my first time at the new Steelhouse Omaha venue. Well, the Flaming Lips were freaking amazing and better than the previous two shows. The Steelhouse was also awesome! It might be one of my favorite live music venues ever! Great show and venue!

    So much fun!

by VicciR on 6/18/23Saint Louis Music Park - Maryland Heights

The Flaming Lips concert was a lot of fun! It was great that they interacted with their fans with giant confetti filled balloon balls bouncing over the crowd, bubbles & a flying toy bird. The lead singer encouraged the crowd to yell & scream. They put on a great live show. I have been a long time fan of them, but this was my first concert of theirs. I Loved it & I will absolutely see them again if they come back.
