The Cult on Tour

The Cult, a shape-shifting rock band, has hardly sat still since their mid-'80s conception. They were born out of England's post-punk scene, first emerging as a heavy metal revivalist band with their debut album Dreamtime in 1984. The collection of shimmering guitars, howling vocals, and neo-psychedelic sounds introduced the dawn of a new musical era as the band transitioned away from the gothic rock genre leaning in the direction of a hard rock act. Dreamtime reached the top of the charts in the UK and served as a prologue for the trilogy The Cult would produce as the '80s went on. By the time Love dropped in the summer of 1985, the fresh ensemble had built a dedicated native following through the release of the teaser single "She Sells Sanctuary." Love became the No. 4 album in the UK, but The Cult achieved international, mainstream success after recording Electric in New York in 1987. Resonant of strident U.S. arena rock, the album picked up on the popular three-chord crunch, hard-hitting kick drum, heroic guitar solos with endless rifts, and passionate vocals backed by sing-along choruses. It was a huge success and sold over one million copies worldwide -- only to be topped by their 1988 magnum opus, Sonic Temple, which featured their top-charting song "Fire Woman." The British band would go on to release two more studio albums by the turn of the century (Ceremony, 1991; The Cult, 1994) and another four over the next two decades (Beyond Good and Evil, 2001; Born into This, 2007; Choice of Weapon, 2012; Hidden City, 2016), plus a total of 41 singles throughout their career. In 2022, fans have the chance to see The Cult on tour across three different countries as they perform the great alt-rock ballads that turned them into an iconic household name.

The Cult in Concert

An ever-evolving ensemble, The Cult has witnessed several changes to its name, lineup, and musical direction since forming in the 1980s -- but two of the band's founding members, singer/songwriter Ian Astbury and lead guitarist Brian Duffy, have remained throughout it all. The current drummer, John Tempesta, joined in 2006, playing with The Cult on tour and in concert ever since. In 2015, Grant Fitzpatrick (bass) and Damon Fox (keyboards/rhythm guitar) joined to help the band record their 10th album, permanently staying on after that. Although Astbury's heavenly vocals and Duffy's thrilling guitar may remain the lifeblood of The Cult on tour in 2022, the entire outfit fulfills the band's original promise and feels like they've stepped straight out of the '90s.

    Great sound

by SDshaman on 10/4/104th and B - San Diego

Although Ian mailed most of his vocals in, the band's sound was suprisingly clear and well defined, especially Billy's guitar leads. This meant it was a building shakin' rock fest with one Cult hit after another blowing the roof off 4th and B. We expected to hear the "Love Live" tour, but what they gave us was rather a fairly diverse playlist from their albums from "Sonic Temple" back to "Love". In spite of the stifling hot weather, Ian delivered vocals dressed in full leathers. Billy was absorbed in making sure the mix and levels were right and he and the band played fantasically. A great night, a great concert.

    Ian Astbury

by ColoradoStacy on 10/2/10Ogden Theatre - Denver

I love The Cult. They were great. I have seen them many times and this time, Ian seemed a little out of breath. He would curse me if he read this, to his credit many bands have a tough time coming to Denver and dealing with the lack of oxygen at this altitude. They didn't take breaks and rocked out pretty hard. Billy Duffy was incredibly tight tonight. They're still magic to watch. Their studio albums are great, but they really rock it hard live.

I finally got to see The Cult.

    by AndyM2010 on 9/27/10Ogden Theatre - Denver

I started listening to The Cult in 1990. I was introduced to Electric at head crushing volume whilst me and 3 fellow college students made a bottle of tequila vansih by the last song. I quickly got into everything else they put out, along with their oder SDC material. I was fan. My wife and I finally got a chance to see them at the Warfield in SF back in 1995. Due to fight delays of a business trip we arrived at the venue just as the crowd burst forth from the doors raving about the show. Similar things happened 2 more times over the next 15 years. This was the show I would not miss. I'm glad I did not miss it. The Cult's music has some intense emotional connections, especially the material from their albums Dreamtime through "The Cult". I was not going to a Cult show with the same attitude I do seeing Opeth or Shpongle or Sleepy Time Gorilla Museum. I know Astbury has led a rougher life than some of my other favorite rock singers. I was not expecting his voice to be at its peak. It was not, but his heart and spirit were in the show with the intensity of someone who has lived his life. He is as passionate as ever, but lower physical energy on stage. Billy Duffy surprised me. He has weathered rock & roll alot better than Astbury. It was a delight to watch him play. I've never considered Duffy a phenomenal guitar player, but an emotional one and his playing resonates with me. The rest of band, while essential, were overshadowed by my familiarity with Astbury & Duffy; those two are The Cult to me. I set my expectations really low for this show. I was pleasantly surprised and I really enjoyed the music. It was like being with an old friend you've not seen for a while. The frenetic energy of youth had mellowed into a more intense enjoyment of good company and music. The Ogden is almost small enough to be intimate. Hats off to Asbury & Duffy for showing they can still, still have heart, and still have passion.

    The Cult in San Diego

by DvorakDon on 9/27/104th and B - San Diego

Billy's guitar was amazing but Ian either forgot more than half the lyrics or decided not to sing them or mumbled over them? I was actually disappointed.

I did not care for Black Ryder at all. The Cult was good, although Ian was skipping words/phrases here and there. Billy was excellent.

    Still Selling Sanctuary

    by littlew00 on 9/27/10Ogden Theatre - Denver

The Cult is still Selling Sanctuary after all these years, with Cult Classics AND their new material. More energy in the crowd than I have ever seen in a usually laid-back Denver audience. But not surprising, considering all of the energy onstage. Openers Black Ryder are reminiscent of that indescribable vibe of the late sixties & early seventies, with all the jangly guitar, solid bass lines and sultry vocals a body could want. And did I mention the "hardest working drummer in the world"??Worth the price of admission, just to watch him.

This is the second time I have seen the Cult. The first was on the Sonic Temple tour, They played to a capacity crowd at the Ogden. Not losing a step, very high power RnR. A good mix of the old and the new. In general a good time for all.The opening band was cool , big things for them soon. Keep , Rocking Ant

    Vocals were drowned out.

    by Albrightie98 on 9/25/10Showbox SODO - Seattle

The Cult--Loud was the theme of the night! Usually this is a good thing, but who ever was running the sound board must have stepped out. The music was so loud that you could hardly hear the vocals. Also, Ian must have had a cold or just trouble keeping up with their songs they wrote 25+ years ago as he shortened the words to most of the songs by just yelling them out instead of actually singing them. Also Ian made multiple complaint about the crowd such as " Since when did Seattle become so conservative, this is real hair, come on, lets hear it!" as well as other complaints about people using they're call phones. Maybe if the songs sounded like like what the crowd was expecting they would have been on their phones, etc. SODO Showbox--Cool place for a show, good food & okay drinks all from an area with a pretty good view of the stage.

    Southern Death Cult Still Rocks

by Zborg on 9/25/10Showbox SODO - Seattle

The band was in excellent form, with effortless execution and a good selection of their more well known tunes. They were a bit sparse on new material from Capsule One. The band announced they were now publishing their own music independent of a label. The gig was amped so loud I had to hear a few bars before I could recognize some of the songs. It was amped well into the pain threshold for me and my ears rang for two days after the show. The Cult's lead singer was somewhat disappointed with the Seattle audience's participation and feedback to their performance. You could call it a condescending attitude played out in full rock star glory. I could not help but compare the stage machinations of Ian Astbury to those of the late Jim Morrison of the Doors. Watch the film of the Door's Hollywood Bowl performance and then go see The Cult on tour now. You will see what I mean. No wonder Ian did a stint with two of the surviving members of the Doors (sans John Densmore) as "Riders On the Storm." The graphics used to support the performance were outstanding. The pre-perfromance Gregorian Chant music got more than a bit long in the tooth! Overall, it was great show, if a bit on the too loud side.

    Yet another great CULT show!

    by CultFan86 on 9/23/10Showbox SODO - Seattle

Must be my 7th or 8th CULT show and they never disappoint! Ian's voice is still terrific and Billy's riffs and piercing solos still set the bar for rock guitar.

The Cult lived up to their reputation once again!

by MudsharkBastard on 9/23/10Showbox SODO - Seattle

Seattle no so much. What a lifeless crowd. Sure it was a Tuesday night, but I have never seen so many stiff people packed into one location. I have seen more energy and celebration at a funeral. The best comparison I can make is that the crowd looked like they were stuck in gridlock traffic with nothing to rubber neck. God forbid you actually bounce to the music. Scowls from all around. Oh, and by the way, The Cult was as good as ever.

Glad I went...but had sound issues...

by onethatmows on 9/23/10Showbox SODO - Seattle

Finaly got myself to see The Cult Live. Surprised it took me this long. Been a fan since the late 80s. While the show was good and I enjoyed seening the band the audio was bad. I dont know if it was the building accoustics (square building, cement floor, open rafters) or the sound guy just missed it but it could have been much better. It took awhile actually to even recognize She Sells Sanctuary was being played, and thats probably in my top 20 song list EVER. So I would know the opening cords... Still glad I went but I hope future shows are better. I prefer the Market Showbox now. Been there a number of times and its always sounded good.

    The Cult ROCKS!!

by GregL68 on 9/21/10The Warfield - San Francisco

This was the best show they have played in 8+ years. Audio was perfect, it was a good crowd, and the band played with energy. Next time they come to town, check them out. Great show.
